Beautiful moments weakened by underdeveloped story and rushed production
samgill292912 April 2018
For me, "Riptide," is a Stephen Cannell TV show from the 80s. Yes, I knew going into "Rip Tide" there would be no Sikorsky, robot, or detective story. While that was slightly disappointing for me, I mention this so you know something about the author of this review. Why was I watching this movie? I like smaller films and independent filmmakers.

Things I liked: Australia. The New South Wales locations were stunningly beautiful. I can't mention the natural beauty of the land without also giving a nod to the composition and cinematography that captured it. This aspect of the movie was very satisfying. The location acted as a perfect contrast for NYC and the ideal place where Cora could reconnect with her extended family and her inner self longing to break free.

One of the best sequences in the film was when Cora is coaxed into the ocean by Chicka. The experience for Cora is depicted as baptism. She goes down into the water, and this begins her cleansing from the pain and filth of her trouble in NYC. This is the point at which Cora commits herself to the transformation she desired to accomplish in setting out for Australia. Australia is the land "down under" and Cora goes down under the water to become a new person. She is turning her world upside down, and this foreshadows what will transpire later in the story. When Cora receives the call to return to NYC, all the inner healing she accomplished is thrown into reverse and culminates in a "reverse baptism," going backwards up through the water and out into her old life. To me, this was an example of the pinnacle of the film's artistry, giving us a view into what is happening inside Cora just with the images alone. Very well done, I think.

I really liked the characters played by Valerie Bader and Naomi Sequeira. Bee, Chicka, and Tom are especially important roles because they have little pretense. This is exactly opposite to the catty, backstabbing crowd Cora is more familiar with at home. Ultimately, this is a "catalyst" character story. Cora, Margot, Bee, and Tom all have inner pain to be worked through. Cora will be the catalyst for the Australian group's pain and the Australian group will be the catalyst for Cora's struggle. Once Cora appears in Australia, the fuse it lit, and the mutual emotional reactions begin with hopefully good results by the end. That's the general idea for the story.

Criticisms: Story and character development. I'm sure the pressure to get everything done on time and within budget was just crushing. In fact, the whole production feels pressured. Many of the key moments in the film should have been refined more and re-shot. Miss Ryan also needed more directorial guidance for her performance in key scenes. Miss Ryan is a remarkable and capable young actor working to extend beyond comedy into drama. That's not easy to do, and it doesn't help if the entire production is stressed and compressed. Screen Canberra claims the movie was shot in 18 days and took six months total from money drop to debuting at Sydney film festival. Impressive, but I think the schedule may also have caused problems in the product.

Furthermore, the story was underdeveloped and did not explore the emotional journeys of the characters in significant depth. As a result, the explosive moment between Cora and Margot was more cringe-inducing than emotionally fulfilling. The whole movie is a character story, but the emotional aspects of the characters' problems and pain are only allowed to create major conflict in a few places. So, the rest of the time the action is listless, unfocused, and dysfunctional. This was really disappointing to me. The story should have developed the baptismal idea further and given us Cora's wilderness journey since a time of suffering/wandering must always follow baptism. The call to return to NYC could then be cast as a temptation to be avoided rather than the reversal it was portrayed to be.

my first review
alllieemcm20 January 2018
Keep in mind that this is m first review and i english is not my first language. This movie, in my opinion, is not that good and there is so much that i didn't like it but most of it it was Cora, the lead actress. I actually like her and i don't know if it was just me but i didn't feel the chemestry during the movie, whoerever with her mother, aunt or the boy she liked. But maybe i'm wrong. Most of the movie she is posing for the camera and i feel like its a typical disney cliché (and i don't even know if this is a disney movie). Overall, i didn't feel like it was a bad movie or something like that but in my opinion is not that great either. You will find yourself picking your phone and scrolling through instragam, for example, while the movie is on and some parts i find it cringe. Maybe im just a bad reviewer but this is not worth more than 6 stars.

It's okay

I would love this movie if there was more talking/acting instead of whole scenes of just their faces looking at things. It was beautiful though, but I would prefer the characters actually talking to each other instead so we could get to know them more.

idk if youll read this but im mad LOL

Warning: Spoilers
Long review.

Characters- 2/10 RUSHED & little character development Plot- 1/ 10

Let me get this straight, I didn't think this would be a good movie in the first place. I actually LIKE cheesy cliché movies, even when they're kind of bad. But this movie... this cheesy cliché movie tried to be all meaningful and it just doesn't work here. The jokes also fell flat. I only laughed ONCE.

Summed up, Cora (Debby Ryan) falls down the stairs & has her photo taken by the paparazzi. She's so embarrassed that she moves in with her aunt in Australia. This is where she meets Chika and the love interest... I don't even remember his name and I just watched it lol.

Every moment Cora has with her family or new friends is in a montage so you don't really feel the connections or chemistry that well. There were like, SEVEN, LONG MONTAGES.

It got to the point when the characters hung out I'd be like "I swear to god if this turns into a montage... oh, another mONTAGE. WHO KNEW"

The whole movie dragged & a lot of the character bonding happened in montages so when conflict happened, I didn't really care. Plus, all the conflict was solved almost instantly.

And, Cora was a B**ch. She was a hypocrite and she was mean to EVERYONE who helped her. She was mean to her aunt for no real reason! Her aunt was all "do what makes u happy" and Cora's all "u don't even swim bc ur husband died" like wtf LMAO

(I think that was just because lazy writing. They needed more conflict so they had to make Cora start some.)

Also, she was instantly forgiven every time she apologized. She wasn't held accountable for what she did.

Cora is supposed to be a strong individual trying to find herself but she's not. I honestly would hate to be friends with her LOL. She's everything I try NOT to be.

The plot was soooo messy. Besides the slow pacing and meaningless montages, there were TWO climaxes, one right after the other. It just felt rushed and weird. NOT TO MENTON, that the middle climax was waaaayyyyy to close to the last two climaxes.

I also didn't care for the aunt mourning over her dead husband subplot lol.

Near the end, the mom had a redemption arc and she needed one but it was SO rushed. There wasn't enough character development for the mom to suddenly be a caring mother!

I'd like to think that kids would enjoy this film, but I'd be lying. I don't think a child could sit through this. It was slow, boring, and predictable.

Rip Tide sucked.

Loved this movie
jill_wooden2 December 2019
I absolutely loved this movie. Such a good movie of coming to age, family expectations, and becoming yourself when you don't think it's possible. I have no clue why there's bad reviews here - this movie was great from start to finish for me! I fell in love with every character and followed the movie easily.

The story makes No sense
christinabossen2 June 2018
The storyline makes no sense. There are Way to many different storylines, and the characters relationsships are not at all explored properly, so the chemistry is non-existing. It is by far the worst film I have ever seen. The progress of the film made me angry.

Rip Tide
bondjames_007323 January 2018
Very entertaining movie, actually enjoyed it up in till 10 minutes to ending. Love the scenery and Australian coast, makes me want to go there and actually sign up for surf lessons. That being said, you focussed the movie on modelling and fashion design, and that was your mistake. Really, watch the last 20 minutes of the movie and ask yourself this? You should know that fashion design in a swimsuit area, needs consulting from actual men. Ok, men, how many of you liked any of the swimsuits or the designs? Swimsuit fashion designs should be geared to men. Did you actually have any men screen those outfits and ask if they actually liked them. The swimsuit designs were atrocious, and really, the outfit she is wearing, do you really wear that on a beach? Let me guess, it's a Vercchai or whatever, shoot the guy that designed it, because not all designs work, and the dress she wearing I would throw in a garbage can and light it on fire. What a piece of crap. Sorry went off topic, 7 stars because the movie took me to a place I would love to visit, Australia.

They tried too much!
nannaaagaard12 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
It sucked if you ask me. You know those movies that you never really get into? Yep this is that kind of movie.

They first of all tried to make it way to meaningful. There was deep music going in 24/7 trough out the whole damn movie. I don't know if other people likes this, but I hate it. And there were so MANY montages.

Second of all, every time Cora does something stupid everyone is like "Sure it's alright, who cares about how you freaked out on my friend, how you got mad at your boyfriend for no reason and how you just started to yell at your aunt, who's btw always said she could come to her and just lost her husband".

And third of all, the relationships just didn't connect. Cora and her mother and aunt was okey, but her boyfriend? Yikes.

I just generally don't like really meaningfull movies with music all the time, so maybe it's just that, but I really didn't like it. Not that I had high expectations, no offense to Debby Ryan, but I firstly thought it wouldn't be good because she plays the head role, and tries to be so so meaningful

Cute, entertaining and unique - with some faults
froydisemilia23 November 2020
This is a really feel-good movie for me, and I have watched it multiple times - however, it is not without faults. The romance is lacking substance, and the side characters are charming, but they don't have a story of their own. I do not particularly love the main character, but I still enjoy the theme of finding yourself/breaking away from expectations and staying true to your own emotions. I'd rate it about 6.5/10

nothing special
SnoopyStyle2 May 2018
Cora Hamilton (Debby Ryan) is working to be the next IT girl. Her controlling mother runs a NY modeling agency who is mostly concerned about getting her a big modeling contract. After an embarrassing incident goes viral, she decides to run away to her aunt Margot living in a beach house in Australia. Margot is still haunted by the lost of her husband. There are hunky surf teacher Tom and local surf girl Chicka. Cora learns surfing and gets to design for the vintage fashion show.

The story is pretty thin. It's not far from Ryan's Disney TV material. There isn't much in terms of drama or tension. It has some nice character growth but isn't much more than that. It's got some pretty scenery and a few pretty people. I'm guessing that this Australian production comes with local talents. The acting is fine. There is nothing out right bad but there is nothing that interesting either.

Great Inspiring Story
rayrenz_0928 January 2018
The movie has a nice cinematography, the views are great and worked well with the theme of the story. What's great about it is how it shows another perspective of life. It's about a journey from a life that's boring into something that will make you happy. I enjoyed the transition of the story. There isn't so much going on but it keeps you wanting to see how the story ends and how the conflicts of each character is resolved. It does have an inspiring theme when you reflect upon Cora's move in the story. Overall, I like the story, not because of the fashion or surfing or the sceneries, but it seems real in life and it leaves a good impression to the viewers.

Absolutely Trash
briannaragusa22 November 2018
It was a terrible movie, The main character is basically a braty teenage girl who is being ungreatful and disrespectful to her mother and complains about modelling; a job that her mom worked hard to get her. She wears ugly outfits and steals money from her mom to buy a plane ticket to Australia. You'll be presented with most of the movie being montages, there is one point where it is just a montage for 10 minutes straight. This movie is dreadfully boring and has bad acting. In conclusion she runs a terrible fashion show, a true eyesore. If your like 6-9 you may enjoy because you don't realize how bad it is but I really would not recommend.

A SILLY TIDE OF EVENTS
movieguy30007 April 2023
This is a silly film that has underdeveloped characters and stories. It' has a weak premise that shouldn't have been made into a feature film. This was just a pay-day for producers like STEVE JAGGI who makes these poor-quality silly films with great looking females. This film has odd cast and some average acting. The girls are attractive and likeable and some of the supporting cast do a good job but apart from that it's a boring story for a bored housewife. Great locations make for great eye candy. Naomi Sequoria is delightful but there is nothing compelling interesting or engaging enough to get this film over the line. An easy film to watch but you'll never want to watch a again.

Beautiful cinematography. But overall meh.
hazard11121 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I love how they captured the scenes. It was breathtaking and so beautiful. I love the water especially. Very cool.

The rest though. Eh. Nothing extraordinary. The story is typical but nothing against it. It just felt rushed somehow. The character development felt lacking. The mother had the most promise actually but it sorta failed with the jump. The lead character was cringy like whatever she did she's the "victim" etc, and everybody is just like I forgive you *hugs*.

Some moments were a bit off, especially during the rescuing scene... felt like it was put there just to show the lead character being the "saviour" of the day. Would've added more impact if the aunt saved herself and Cora helps her back to shore.

From designer perspective: Unrealistic how an untrained, never even practiced or nor made an outfit in her life (based on the fact that she modelled all her life) actually made 4 swimsuits that perfectly fit the body.

Mary Sue and Contrived Acting
LisaReviews16 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Cora Hamilton, a rich 18 year old model breaks away and finds a path she would rather pursue. Throw in an odd romantic interest and you have a story, right?

Cora is pretty enough to be a model and everyone loves her in spite of her digging in to their personal lives. What does that make her? Yup, she's a Mary Sue.

Unfortunately, smiling, laughing and looking pretty doesn't equal good acting. Where's the real emotion? The characters don't seem to mix well and their interactions with each other seem contrived.

The oddball romance comes across as an attempt to make this story more interesting. The protagonist and the male 'love interest' fight, then all the sudden the protagonist wants to compare her non relationship to a married couple by asking the widow if she ever fought with her husband. Keep in mind the protagonist and her 'love interest' did nothing but look at each other since they met. Finally, 53 minutes in to the movie there's some sort of romantic start for the two that somehow justifies him being there.

Would not watch again nor recommend. Sorry.

A Cool Movie!
maralvimmm25 January 2018
Hmmm, you know that movie "Afternoon Session", so I loved it, that's it. Going and moving, a light story, that parades the actors and catching you, yes, a cool movie! I did not give anything for him, but I liked it, I recommend it, for those who want something like this .... Movie about choices and relationship.

The plot is about an aspiring model who makes a trip to the interior and discovers, the good things that exist in places like that !!!!

It is the second film of the young Australian filmmaker Rhiannon Bannenberg, who previously did Ambrosia (2015), which received a great note in IMDB 8.1! The protagonist is young American Debby Ryan, who has made many TV series and movies, and this is still one of her first feature films. Also featuring beautiful Australian actress Genevieve Hegney who had already made Amber Amulet (2013), Love Without Sin (2013) and Candy (2006).

I'm surprised the current rating is 5.5
aprigodich20 October 2022
This movie is so poorly put together. Some of the performances were not bad. The aunt and mother characters are convincing in their performances. Debby Ryan's character is supposedly obsessed with fashion and designing yet the costume designers dressed her in clothing for a 10 year old. The biggest gripe I have with this movie is how many 1/4 developed storylines they shoved together. It is so cliche in every aspect. This movie could have been okay had they just stuck to the daughter/mother fighting and aunt who is grieving storyline or the young girl wants to decide her life and takes off to AUS and makes real friends and falls in love. There's just so many bad trope storylines smushed together haphazardly. The ending implies a potential sequel which was laughable.

Not Original, but GOOD
sanclan15 July 2020
I think this is a good watch. The story and acting were very good. I really like the 'finding yourself' aspect that this movie displayed. Also, the relationship between the mom, daughter, aunt, old friend, etc. that were really important to this story. I recommend it.

A story of finding your way
kwilson-4088824 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched this 3-4 times. It's a story about a young woman, Cora, with an amazingly overbearing controlling mother, and how she figures out what she wants, instead of what Mom wants. To get away, she takes off to her aunt's house in Australia, where the locals are fun and real. The scenery is beautiful. The locals are quirky and kind. Cora is a little spoiled and a little immature, but has a chance to grow up, spending time with down-to-earth honest people with real struggles and problems. They let her be herself, good or bad. She's allowed to take the lead, be creative, and succeed or fail, on her own merits.

Very funny in spots
cwg2005a7 January 2022
First, to get to the best part first: Naomi Sequeira is really cute and fun as the "sidekick," as all Christmas romance films need. I wish her role were a bit larger.

I see come criticism of Cora, but actually, I thought that given the role of a spoiled me-centric model, she carried it pretty well. The nicest part of this is not the plot ("fish out of water" typical plot) but the story.

The story takes place "down under" and the Cora's character arc is slowly but effectively shown, from center of attention to the master designer in the background. There is a nicely-written secondary story of her mother and aunt's estrangement , which is of course tied up as you would expect.

I laughed out loud at place in this. The writing, direction and editing (pacing) were all above-average, and I recommend this film.

Does not deserve the bad reviews, give it a chance you'll be glad you did.
zoehay-484-7973853 February 2022
On the surface this seems to be a teen movie about an IT girl model facing a teenage crisis but please watch this movie and give it a chance, it offers so much more!

It explores the effect deep grief can have on lives, families, friendships. It wasn't the teen flick I was expecting but I'm so glad I put it on. Sure, it's not an academy award winner but it deserves a decent star rating, not the 1's people have given it. Please give it a chance, it's a real feel good movie.

Excellent film with good values and positive story was sabotaged
jasontheterrible23 November 2020
After seeing this three times simply because it was on, I decided to try and figure out why the ratings and reviews had such low scores. The scenery is fantastic and many actors in it are positively stunning, The reviews were not just terrible they were mean-spirited, with totally nonsensical objections.

What I discovered, not surprisingly, was that the really bad reviews were written by one-time reviewers, meaning leftist shills created fake identities just to spew hatred and sabotage this film. Why, you might ask? Because it was old fashioned, lacking F bombs, sex, angry minorities, and PC propaganda. The lead actress Debby Ryan was a well known Christian in her earlier years and was involved in Christian programs. Hollywood despises Christians. Leftists want to destroy traditionalism, so they send in brigades of haters day one to write bad reviews and kill off these films before anyone can see them.

Unfortunately, Debby Ryan has since surrendered and joined their causes in order to continue her career.

The acting is excellent all around, and the characters well written. There is redemption, forgiveness and life changes. Debby Ryan is especially good and carries the film with aplomb. If you watch it without reading the bad reviews, you will not only enjoy it, you will give your kids some really wholesome entertainment.
