So far the best episode of season 3
8512229 September 2018
Greetings from Lithuania.

4th episode "Checkmate" was so far the most intense and involving episode in season 3. Don't get me wrong, i liked all previous episodes, but this was so far the best of them. Cinematography, acting, writing and directing were superb as usual.

Overall, i enjoying this season of "Narcos" so far. Maybe so far it isn't as good as some of the previous entries, but i do looking forward in watching it all.

The Ole Switcheroo

Warning: Spoilers
After finding out about the whereabouts of Don Gilberto's house, Pena along with Colonel Martinez pull a double switch on not only the cartel but the Cali police as well, making a fake raid on an empty house while a second group captures Don Gilberto. An exciting chase scene ensues with more twists and turns along the way. Meanwhile Jorge retrieves Maria's son for Miguel.

After a couple of lackluster episodes to kick off season 3, we needed something like this to kick this season into high gear!! The action's week done and the twists were nicely done as well. We'll s3 how long they're able to keep Gilberto behind bars, especially now that Pena has lost his ally in the police force.

I'm also interested to see what Pancho decides to do. With Gilberto behind bars, is this the time for him to cut his ties with Cali and go in to the business for himself?

Above the expectations.

Who could think this show will make such a impact even after Pablo's death but it does. They just tricked the whole Cartel+Police. These two new guys are really good and now Penia's real strength is on the screen. This is how they should operate. This sudden capture of Gilberto shows how he is different from Pablo. Even after open crimes, he never got fooled and Cali Cartel even been secretly operating lost there Godfather in one attempt.

Things go pear-shaped for the Cali Cartel... and for the six-month deal

Warning: Spoilers
That was unexpected. I assumed Gilberto would be the main enemy up to the end of the season, so it's a real surprise to see him captured so early. I kept thinking he'd be rescued at some point but nope, he's going to rot in prison. What was really good was seeing the real footage of his capture as well. Gilberto and Cali Cartel didn't see this coming either, you can see how shocked they are that their plan was blown.

Another interesting aspect is that the biggest threat in this episode was not the cartel but the police. We knew the Cali police are in the pockets of the cartel, but to see that they are willing to rescue Gilberto from the DEA, going directly against the national interest, shows just how bad it is.

So it's a victory for Agent Peña, but he's not popular with the Colombian government. The deal with the Cali Cartel that would have brought peace is potentially blown if they keep Gilberto prisoner, and if they released him there would be outrage. Another interesting dimension added to the story.

Checkmate

Warning: Spoilers
It is a little unclear what they are going for with the Gilberto character, sometimes he seems almost afraid and sometimes he seems like a legitimate tough boss, but his prison stint is a nice change of pace from the first few episodes. It is always fun to see bad guys get humbled and we definitely got that here with him losing all his power.
