Plot Summary

Ruth's house is broken into while she's at work as nurse aide and a patient dies. The police arrive and take fingerprints, photos. and notes. As she isn't sure that she locked the doors and there's no sign of forced entry, the police tells her to up her security. But Ruth feels violated. She sleeps at her neighbor Angie's house. The next day she finds out whose dog's been shitting on her front lawn: Tony's. She also finds a shoe print in her garden and becomes a sleuth. She asks neighbors if they've seen anything and she tracks her stolen computer on her phone. She later befriends Tony as he's strong, and together they go on a quest to catch the thief. Trivia Macon Blair used the experience of having his apartment broken into and laptop stolen, plus a lack of police follow-up, as some of the inspiration for this story. See more »
Goofs While the conspicuous placement of the Catan game in Tony's house may at first seem out of place for a loner like him, and therefore an error, it more likely represents his innermost hopes and plans for a life with stronger social connections. He dreams and prepares for a day when he will have enough friends to play the game. Its presence the first time Ruth enters his house is both forlorn and optimistic. See more »
