However, if 2016 taught us anything it’s that the landscape for specialized releases is incredibly complex. Is Lionsgate a specialty distributor or minimajor? Should we only look at those films that were independently made? (Then we can fight over what that means.) Is it only for films that opened in limited release, then expanded slowly? Should we only consider theatrical releases? Do all documentaries qualify? What about subtitled films?

MacGillivray Freeman’s “National Parks Adventure,” featuring the narration of Oscar winner Robert Redford, is now the highest grossing documentary of the year. It has been in theaters for 41 weeks and surpassed political documentary “Hillary’s America” ($13.1 million) for a domestic total that now stands at $17.6 million. The nature appreciation doc has also made $5.2 million overseas, bringing its global total to $22.8 million. The movie clearly benefited from higher average ticket prices on IMAX screens. A total of 145 feature documentaries were submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration for the 89th Academy Awards.
Out of those films the members of the Academy’s documentary branch will select a shortlist of 15 features that will be announced in December, and the five nominations will be announced on January 24.
