Feeling Bad
claudio_carvalho26 March 2017
Tara discloses to Rick about the arsenal of the Oceanside and Rick and his group heads to the community to take their weapons. Maggie is working at the Hilltop and Gregory lures her telling that he wants to make up with her. Meanwhile the Savior David tries to rape Sasha that is locked in a cell; however Negan surprises the man and kills him. He leaves the dead man inside Sasha's cell and gives a knife to her. Then he proposes Sasha to join the Saviors. Rick and his group attacks Oceanside and take all his guns to fight The Saviors, leaving the community without any weapon.

"Something They Need" is an episode where Rick and his group act the same way The Saviors do, stealing the weapons from the Oceanside community, leaving women and children without a single weapon. It is hard to accept his attitude after delivering Alexandria's arsenal passively to The Saviors without any reaction and associating to a dangerous and parasite group. Sasha asked for and now is prisoner of Negan and he will certainly use her against Rick. The loathsome Eugene is completely integrated to The Saviors. The despicable Gregory is plotting some scheme against Rick and his allied. This is the penultimate episode of this season and it is hard to guess what will happen on the next episode: a war or a surprising reaction of Negan? My vote is eight.

Nice Summary Episode
ottawa10127 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The episode accomplished a lot and was much better than the previous few. There was development in the various story lines.

The trip to get the guns introduced the Oceanside group to the idea of fighting the saviors. Some were for, some were against which made perfect sense. They also took care of Tara's emotional struggle quite well I thought. She knew what she had to do but also knew the promise that she was breaking. The killing the walkers was perfectly over the top in demonstrating their new strength. It was an excellent showcase for the Oceanside group to join in. Well done!!

Maggie and Gregory moved along as well. Gregory was saved by Maggie and proved even more useless than before. Look for him to tell Simon about Maggie and the plans. B story line with B development.

Sasha is still on the path to killing Negan although thinking rather than reacting. She is now on the inside as is Eugene who will turn.

Dwight at the end was a surprise and well done. Simple writing would have had him changing sides mid battle, perhaps saving Darryl. We all knew it was going to happen but moving it up out of the blue like this was a surprise.

The only downside to the show was the attempted rape of Sasha. Just would not have happened. It was just a gratuitous attempt to enter tension into a situation where none was needed. No guard would attempt anything like that knowing what Negan was like. Now, if Negan had just simply killed Dave and left him in the cell to test Sasha, that might have made sense. Killing Dave for no reason makes sense. Dave attempting rape made no sense.

Great drama, decent action and nice character moments
gogetters-2478626 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this episode. It had everything you need. The journey to Oceanside doesn't end how you would expect it. Alanna Masterson really shines in her authentic role as Tara. Her moral dilemma is very tangible and I loved her speech. Natania may get some dislikes for her behavior in this episode, but I completely understand where she's coming from. She is actually a good leader of Oceanside and she kinda reminds me of King Ezekiel in some ways: She is afraid to put her people in danger, as she already lost so many to the Saviors...

Enid stepping up was also nice. She clearly was about take that shot to take out Natania. Katelyn Nacon is a good actress and I like her. I hope Enid will be around until the end of TWD. Her and Carl are nice to watch! Tobin and Eric from Alexandria also had some more screen time, which I think is good. I like them both, especially Tobin. He's a tall dude and I think a fistfight with him wouldn't go out well for the other guy.

The scenes at Hilltop are probably the most intriguing ones of this great episode. Gregory and Maggie are so different when it comes to leadership. I really enjoyed the dialogue and the stuff that was going on between them.

Rick and his squad have a plan to get to the Oceanside's weapons - I liked the idea and its explosive outcome... ;)

Sasha's path is very uneven. The dialogue between her and Eugene was gold. I like Negan's character when his presence isn't as cartoonish as in episode 4 "Service". Enjoyed his scenes.

Really enjoyed this week's episode once again. I guess it's stuffed with things everyone will like. My vote is 10.

Ah, another character I really like is Cyndie. Her forgiving Tara was a great moment and I can see a rising future for her character - Sydney Park is a talented actress for sure!

Really Enjoyed This One!

Warning: Spoilers
Yes, this is probably one of my favorite episodes of The Walking Dead. I love our group working together as a badass team. The leader of Oceanside (Natania) is hard to convince. Tara's speech is emotional and to be really really honest...it kind of represents our reality. Masterson did a fantastic job delivering this speech. Speaking of acting: Every actor and actress did a great job! To me Sydney Park (Cyndie) is one of the most promising actresses ever, hope to see more of her.

I loved the whole dynamic back at Hilltop. Cohan delivered her role so perfectly and you gotta admit that Gregory's actor is brilliant. Some tensions rise at Hilltop and I loved how everything went down! The Sanctuary parts were the most exciting for me as I love Sasha and Eugene as supporting characters. I'm not sure who will die in the season finale - but I have the feeling that Eugene will redeem himself just to get killed off. I don't know...I'm just thrilled for next week! Should be explosive! My favorites in this episode: Tara, Sasha and Cyndie. And Michonne, the badass in the tree ;)

Tomorrow is Gonna Be a Big Day
ThomasDrufke26 March 2017
Tonight was one of those episodes that attempted to build up the next episode in a dramatic way, but didn't hit on all the levels it probably should have. We caught up with almost every section of the cast, but with very little return.

However, there are a few things that worked well for me, one being Sasha's arc. The whole "Rapey Davey" thing in the beginning felt out of place, especially because most of The Saviors have felt unhinging in less disgusting ways. I didn't need to watch that creep nearly rape Sasha, a different approach would have been more appropriate, but I guess it wouldn't have led to Negan's proposal. But besides that whole sequence, I loved every time Sonequa Martin- Green was on screen. She barely said anything to Negan or Eugene, but you can see every emotion in her face and body language. I particularly found it devastating hearing her plea to Eugene for a weapon to kill herself (only to find out she was likely playing him, and then consequently see him give her a poison pill instead). Just seeing Eugene's face and hearing her voice is all we needed.

The rest of the crew went to Oceanside to take their guns and attempt to get their group on board with fighting the Saviors. Only half was successful, getting all of their guns, but this whole thing felt a bit anticlimactic. We didn't get a battle with any consequences against Oceanside, all we got was a quick and predictable spiel with some walkers. I expected more out of an Oceanside conflict. At the very least, we could have gotten a shocking (even if unimportant) death, ala the Beth conflict at the hospital in season 5. No matter, I'm sure Oceanside will come into play down the road.

The other thing worth noting is Gregory's little mix-up with a walker and Maggie. Did anybody actually think Gregory would kill Maggie? Or better yet, him step up and kill a walker? The man is so pathetic, which pretty much guarantees that he will make an awful and devastating choice next week that could lead to something horrible happening. I happen to think he was the "little bird" Negan was speaking of to Sasha early in the episode. Figures he would be the guy to mess everything up.

So it was a frustrating episode in some regards, but perhaps an episode better suited as part 1 of 2 as next week's episode surely will have some major stuff going down. Dwight's switch to the good guys is exactly what I hoped for. I love Austin Amelio in that role, and his turn can only mean good things for his character. The question is, will it all be too late for him. I think the march to war is nearly over. War is coming.

+Sonequa's acting

+Dwight's turn

+Negan monologues

-Oceanside was anticlimactic

-Creepy Savior was unnecessary

Something They Need

Warning: Spoilers
Sasha trying to manipulate Eugene only to see her plan horribly backfire was good writing.

But the Oceanside story was really boring. We knew what would happen and there was very little drama along the way.

TWD needs to give us threats on a weekly basis. Right now we know there is very little chance of death outside of a season premiere or finale.

The episode explores the Oceanside community and its history, particularly the reasons behind their isolation and their reluctance to join the fight against the Saviors
fernandoschiavi21 March 2024
Tara has told Rick about the community and arsenal at Oceanside. He now is leading a group of Alexandrians there, in hopes of getting the residents' support against the Saviors. If not their support, however, Rick still intends to take their weapons.

Tara sneaks in and holds Natania and Cyndie at gunpoint, begging them to talk to Rick. Feigning injury, Natania turns the tables and takes Tara hostage. Tara then reveals that she had previously been threatening her with an unloaded gun, as she had no intention of hurting anyone.

As the Oceanside residents are gathered together, they express a desire to go along with Rick's plan and join the fight. Natania, though, now holds a loaded weapon on Tara, and refuses to cooperate. Michonne watches the scene unfold through a rifle scope, ready to take Natania out if necessary. Before the situation is able to resolve itself, however, a group of Walkers approaches. The Survivors and the Oceanside members work together to clear the herd. Natania still refuses to allow her people to join the fight against the Saviors, but she tells Rick that he should take their guns "and get the hell out of here".

At the Sanctuary, Sasha is in a cell, having been captured after sneaking into the compound to kill Negan. Her guard Dave attempts to rape her, but Negan arrives before things can get worse. He tells Dave that rape is firmly against one of their rules, then drives a hunting knife completely through the man's neck. Negan then leaves the weapon on the floor for Sasha. He tells her she can kill herself with it, or take care of "Rapey Davey" before he can reanimate and attack her. If she kills Dave, though, that means that she is accepting Negan's offer to join the Saviors.

Later that day, Negan returns to Sasha's cell and sees that she has finished off Dave. He is pleased with her decision, but tells her that she needs to further prove her loyalty by helping to stop Rick, who he's been told is planning to stir up further trouble. In a little while Eugene stops by, saying that he's glad Sasha has decided to be practical and join the group. Sasha, however, tells him that's not what she truly wants. She now sees that Negan will surely use her as a pawn against her friends. She can't allow that to happen, and begs Eugene to give her "a knife, a gun, anything" with which she can kill herself.

Eventually Eugene returns to her cell, having decided to help her. He brings the poison pills that he had previously made at the request of Negan's wives. Eugene doesn't want Sasha to die, but he can see that she has already decided her fate.

As the Survivors returns to Alexandria, Rosita has returned from her aborted attack on the Saviors. When her friends ask her if Sasha is okay, she simply shakes her head sadly, unable to provide any information. She does have something to show them, however. In the holding cell that Morgan had built there is a new prisoner. It is Dwight, who tells Rick that he wants to help in the fight against Negan.

One of the most memorable scenes in the episode is when Tara confronts Natania, the leader of the Oceanside community, and convinces her to join their cause. This moment highlights Tara's growth as a character and her ability to inspire others to take a stand against tyranny. The tension builds as Rick and the group face numerous obstacles and threats in their quest for weapons, leading to a thrilling and suspenseful climax that sets the stage for the epic showdown between Rick's group and the Saviors in the season finale.

The episode is also notable for its exploration of the Oceanside community and its history, particularly the reasons behind their isolation and their reluctance to join the fight against the Saviors. This adds depth to the conflict and raises questions about the nature of survival and the choices people make in order to protect themselves and their community.

Better than the last one, too many breaks between seasons
rokbf5128 March 2017
I would not trust Dwight for a second the way he manipulates, frames others, and treated Daryl more than once. What they should do is keep him locked up until he gives up all the information until it can be verified he is not laying a trap for everyone. When they do attack the saviors, Dwight would be leading the way & never bringing up the rear. Just by what he allowed to have happen to his wife Sherry should be proof about the kind of person he is, if he allowed to have that happen to someone that should have been protected with his life, he is capable of anything. Just by what he did also to Daryl when they were all captured should be made known to all. I do believe Sherry is still alive, so hopefully they can find her & ask her opinion on Dwight's Fate, along with other people there who are friends of hers dealing with captivity. Next up is Simon to deal with, and that would be handed off to Carl.

Control is out of the hands of the creators!
benyaminshakeri-048564 February 2024
The episode one before the end of this season of The Walking Dead series was broadcast at a very high speed, and this high speed caused weaknesses and defects to appear!

In the previous 14 episodes, the storyline was very slow and slow, and this made this episode and probably the next episode to be faster. Well, the producers of the series could speed up the episodes of this season and reduce the number of episodes.

In my opinion, the writers and directors could have spread these 15 episodes in 8 episodes!!

Well, this issue causes both the viewer's time to be wasted and the production costs of the series not to be saved.

But now it's time to talk about the important points of this episode: 1- In the meeting between Rick and the ladies of the ocean, with the least possible dialogue, they agree to cooperate with Rick. They didn't know each other before and I don't know how they agreed to cooperate with them so soon to fail!

2- When Rick and Natania were talking in the forest, two of their men were handcuffed, but I don't know how they were shooting at the zombies when the zombies attacked!!!

3- Negan's poor acting was quite visible in this episode, as if he was woken up and forced to play a scene.

In the end, I give this episode a 7.

Show is nearly dead
larosat27 March 2017
People are praising this episode because compared to the rest of this incredibly awful season; a few things happened. Negan as the most laughable villain ever and looking like a walking, decrepit corpse with his sticklike arms doesn't help. I hope they keep losing viewers till they get a wake up call and cure Gimple who has destroyed the show.

Better than the last episode
ericstevenson26 March 2017
I really want to come forth and apologize for my review of the last episode. I submitted it because I was tired and didn't really care about how it would end up as it was my last in a long day. I think it deserves its spot as my least liked review. Anyway, this episode was one I paid a lot more attention to and it'll show with what I say. This works because it shows a lot of focus on different characters. The most intense part is easily how everyone in Rick's group is forced to actually threaten other people to get help against the Saviors.

Sasha's struggle is great as Negan continually taunts her. It's great that there are so many little stories that are building up to the problems of the groups as a whole. It's weird to have Negan's trash talk toned down so much from the comics. I'm glad to see Rick and Michonne again, but they aren't the episode's focus. Really, a lot of the characters seem to get a good amount of screen time in this. I also love the zombies that come from the ocean. I just love the makeup with the barnacles on their bodies. ***1/2

Warning: Spoilers
An alright episode. Tara breaks her promise and takes Rick and the group to Oceanside. Back at The Sanctuary, we see that Sasha has been captured and put into a cell. A Saviors named David comes into the cell and tries to "word that will get this review declined" Sasha. As he is taking off his belt Negan enters the room. He does not accept his apology and stabs David in the throat. Negan leaves the knife with Sasha and offers her to be one a Savior on day because she has "beach ball sized lady nuts". Back at Hilltop, there is a pointless scene of Maggie planting something. Gregory considers killing her while her back is turned. He doesn't. Gregory goes to kill a walker. He gets scared so Maggie does it instead. Another walker appears and takes Gregory to the ground. The writers needed to add some suspense so Maggie wrestled with the walker instead of just killing it so she wouldn't save Gregory right away. Back at Oceanside, Tara somehow snuck into a house and when the leader of Oceanside enters Tara points a gun at her. They want their guns and also offer them to join the fight against The Saviors. The group takes the people of Oceanside as hostages. Tara somehow gets overpowered. The Oceanside leader takes Tara hostage and speaks to Rick. The leader's granddaughter knocks her out and then the place gets overrun by walkers because the episodes need poorly directed, meaningless, boring, repetitive killing of walkers. Back at The Sanctuary, Eugene visits Sasha. Sasha asks for something to kill herself. Eugene gives it a long though but comes back to the cell later with the poison he made. He slides it through the gap in the door. Back at Alexandria, Rick and the group arrive. Rosita opens the gate for them and then takes them to a cell where Dwight is. Daryl charges at him but Rick stops him. Rosita tells them that Dwight wants to help them. This episode contributed to the plot but was still full of stupidity.

Something we don't need
TheLittleSongbird28 June 2021
Actually that does sound too harsh and like it to me was an irredeemable episode. Far from it, it was just a clumsy attempt at a catchy and witty review summary that in retrospect will be taken the wrong way. "Something They Need" is another example of an episode for anything where giving it a low rating and negative review has not been done with pleasure, despite the season being one of 'The Walking Dead's' worst there were a few good episodes and with the synopsis the penultimate episode of it (this) had potential.

Potential that was not lived up to in "Something They Need" and this is not how to do a penultimate episode for anything. It was to me a case of two main stories in one, with one being much better than the other. One was promising and carried by a great performance from the character it centres primarily around. The other was pretty weak with a couple of things saving it. "Something They Need" is not a terrible episode and is not a 1/10 episode that has been given out too easily and with malice, but we have seen numerous times that 'The Walking Dead' can be brilliant and we saw glimpses of that in a couple of Season 7's episodes and this had too many flaws to be that.

"Something They Need" does have good things. The best thing about it is the powerful and justifiably never-universally praised performance of Sonequa Martin-Green, her conflicting emotions being conveyed very movingly and her conflict being written with uncompromising tension and pathos. Negan is menacing and poses a genuine threat, he's not caricaturish in the way that he was in other episodes of 'The Walking Dead' (a prime example being "Service"). The character interaction between the two fascinated and chilled. The only downside of that story was the completely unnecessary sequence with Dave and the gratuitous outcome.

Furthermore, the whole episode is well made visually. It's stylish and atmospheric and one doesn't have to worry about cheap green screen junkyard settings and even cheaper CGI deer. The music is also suitably haunting and the performances all round are strong, especially Martin-Green.

The Oceanside story was less good. Really appreciated that it tried to make Tara more interesting and give her development and overall it is one of her better appearances. It does have moments of intrigue. Unfortunately, it is let down by a severe lack of tension, very draggy pacing that too often makes the story too aimless and padded and far too much talk (the worst of it making Negan's long winded monologing that keeps popping up since he was first introduced tight in comparison).

As well as some very off characterisation, especially Rick acting no better than Negan yet it is rammed down the throat that he's a hero and always right and also Tara's contradictory and too willing attitude towards the plan. Very jarring compared to what is already known about her. The ending felt rather anti-climactic and the action less than thrilling.

Concluding, disappointing and wildly uneven penultimate episode to a mostly underwhelming season. 4/10.

Rick is Negan
Jack Doyle28 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The worst sin in many movies and TV shows, the likes of 24s of this world is hero centre morality. Negan is a villain for what he did to Rick's group but Rick is still a hero despite doing the same to someone else? The problem with this episode, is that reverses a lot of the more interesting political plots over the last season. Instead theft and oppression is presented as being okay, if our heroes are the ones doing it.

It also wasn't true to what we've know of the characters why would Jesus or even Daryl go along with this plan? to put children in harms way, to rob a community of its weapons. It's just extremely bad writing, in a rush to a season finale.

If Rick is just the same as Negan, then their battle is meaningless and uninteresting as it just replaces one tyrant with another.
