I think it's safe to say that most people thought season 3 of Arrow was the worst so far, or at least a huge step back from season 2. So my expectations were relatively lower than in seasons past for this year. With that said, tonight's episode was solid. In classic Arrow form we had quite a few WTF moments but at least everyone made it out alive from this weeks episode, oh wait...
I think the biggest question I had going into this season was what could possibly make Oliver come back to Star City after everything that has happened. Even though there wasn't a whole lot explained in that area, I bought into him coming back. For the same reason that I bought into Felicity secretly helping Team Arrow, check that Team Green Arrow, while they were gone. It makes sense that both of them miss Star City and the thrills and fulfillment that saving the city gave them. I also questioned how in the world the city would accept the Green Arrow just because his 'sleeves' are now cut off. While cheesy, the speech at the end sold me on it.
The tone is clearly going to be different this season, which is one of the reasons why I have a problem with the last few minutes of the episode. The show-runners vowed to give us a lighter tone this season, which is fine. That's clear as we see Felicity and Oliver joking back and forth in the first few scenes. (side note: was that Molly Shannon as the neighbor??) But it's jarring when you then show that clearly someone dies by season's end. I will once again state that I hope the show doesn't turn into Game of Thrones when characters just die every episode. Only kill off characters if it actually makes sense within the story to do so.
A new season brings a new villain and this season seems to lead us to believe Damien Darhk will be the 'big bad'. While it's not clear exactly what his motivations are for the city, I am not endorsing Quentin as his inside man. To me, that just doesn't make sense at all to who his character is. He knows this man is a killer. I don't care how much Quentin hates Oliver or any of the heroes, he as a cop would never associate himself with a murderer. I will however buy into Darhk being the villain this season. He exceeded my expectations and I love how Blake Neely once again gave a cool score/theme to the character. He consistently has made every villain sound and feel different.
As for Team Green Arrow, it was just another week for the crew. Felicity had her quirky lines, Thea is drifting, Laurel was only half-annoying, and Diggle is brooding. I find it funny how Oliver is sleeveless now because that means he can't really have any scenes next to Diggle. The man is so ripped it's not even fair. Most of the character dynamics made sense, like Oliver being okay with Felicity lying (after all, Oliver was an A+ liar), and Oliver & Diggle still share tension, but I don't think the whole 'Oliver not telling them about one more thing he "saw" back in the day relating to a villain'. I'm pretty tired of Oliver using that as an excuse, but I have faith in the writers.
Finally, I don't believe the grave is for Felicity and I don't believe Oliver is talking about Darhk when he says "I'm going to kill him". I have a feeling Oliver is talking about Malcom and for some reason I don't see one of the main cast members dying. But we shall see.
