OK Idea. Poor Rendering
arfdawg-14 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The Plot.

Nathan is an agoraphobic, living alone and keeping to himself. Until he meets his neighbor Izzy and something awakens, Something that is pure evil.

Hard to believe this was made for $1,500.

Nice production. A bit overly dramatic.

The premise is interesting but the unfolding of the story is so slow and laborious that you lose interest about a third of the way through.

It's a dangerous business going outside you door

Warning: Spoilers
Nathan Robbins (Adam Dillon) is agoraphobic. He is in cuffs at a police station being questioned by Detective James Miller (Nicholas Vince) over an incident involving his neighbor Isabelle Carter (Becca Talulah). It is clearly not good. The story is told as a flashback.

Nathan lives an extremely routine and regimented life. He gets up everyday at 8:59. The same song plays on his non-radio alarm clock. His mother was murdered and we see the shadow and images of a demon around Nathan. Not too hard to figure out. Adam Dillon did well in his dysfunctional role, however the film went slow having excess filler in what is mostly a film consisting of 3 people. More drama-thriller than horror. Not any real blood and gore.

Guide: F-word. Sex. No nudity.

Good colours, bad everything else

Warning: Spoilers
HOLLOWER is another indie horror dud, this time courtesy of British indie direction MJ Dixon. I have no idea how a film like this garners positive reviews, because I didn't see anything positive about it. This inactive feature involves four actors sitting around in a single location and chatting; the first 25 minutes alone merely involves a guy looking at his reflection in a mirror, so you can see how dragged out this all is. The plot is about an agoraphobic guy who gets a new girlfriend and isn't too bad, but there simply isn't enough of it to sustain the running time. The best thing about this is the over-saturated primary colour palette which makes for some interesting visuals a la SUSPIRIA, but that's about it.

Honestly Boring and Stiff
icocleric26 July 2022
The scripting was quite stiff, and this really didn't help the acting. A lot of it is done as a police interview, with flashbacks as what happened is being remembered. The police officer, who talks a lot basically has no range.

The did try and go for a twist at the end, but it didn't really make any kind of sense, or wasn't explained in the context of the film. But at the same time spelled out a couple of things, again, and slowly as the film flashes back.

So I honestly found it a bit boring, but feel disappointed that the supernatural elements aren't even hinted at during other parts of the film.

Allow it in...

Really nice film. Atmospheric, good characters, well played. Great lighting, sound was a bit quiet at times, could have been more horrific but it's a psych film not a gore one.

A surprising and chilling horror treat
stewsith4 March 2017
I went into this film having already seen the team's prior films Slasher House and Legacy of Thorn and whilst these films are set in the same 'Slasherverse' you don't need to have seen them to enjoy what is an indie horror treat. Hollower is a low budget affair but that in no way detracts from what is a tight script with some truly shocking twists. Nathan is a sympathetic protagonist and we are shown through flashbacks the events that lead him to his encounter with the superb Nicholas Vince (Hellraiser) as seen on the poster. The film builds into a routine and whilst I was initially worried that the story would grow stale, events escalate and take a horrifying turn as you come to realise that something isn't quite right with poor Nathan. The cast are a delight to watch, each putting in a solid performance and results in very likable characters, making the darker turn in the second act even more painful to watch.

As a low budget indie the film uses it's budget wisely, focusing on creating a claustrophobic environment within Nathan's flat and some creative lighting and sound design really pull you into the world. For gore hounds this film isn't for you - this is a film more focused on tension and character building making it more of a psychological horror although there are some gruesome moments. Monster fans will also be satisfied as there is something very sinister lurking in the shadows, the final identity of which is revealed in a well executed and horrifying revelation.

The only negatives I could point out are a few issues with sound levels (a few lines were a bit too quiet) but as a low budget indie the filmmakers did a great job with what they had available to them and the story and characters more than made up for this. Overall, this film earns its five stars for me as I was hooked after the first five minutes and very pleasantly surprised to see such a fiercely independent film punch very high above it's budget in bringing us a story I won't soon forget.

Brilliant, psycho-esque Horror!
Cozantifarmer15 May 2020
Found this on Amazon Prime.

A tight, perfectly scripted haunted house movie with a bit of difference. One of the creepiest film I've ever seen.

It had me gripped throughout, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since.

Exactly what I was looking for and the prefect isolation movie.
