The Film Federation of India has selected Lijo Jose Pellissery’s “Jallikattu” as the country’s representative in the 2020 Oscars’ best international feature category.
The Malayalam-language film has been a festival favorite around the world having played at Toronto, London, Busan and Stockholm in 2019 and at Rotterdam in 2020. Pellissery won best director at the International Film Festival of India, Goa in 2019.
The film follows a bull that escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village and the entire village gathers to hunt down the animal, exposing deep societal fissures in the process.
Reviewing the film for Variety, Jessica Kiang wrote: “Get ready to be gored by cinema’s horns, trampled under a stampede of deliciously grotesque, fleshy imagery and tossed aloft on a buffalo-snort of bravado because Lijo Jose Pellissery’s utterly bonkers ‘Jallikattu’ is here to pummel a Midnight Madness slot near you into submission. “Sometimes dead is better”
One of the wonderful things about the horror genre is the low barrier to entry. If a young filmmaker today has a GoPro, a monster energy drink and an idea (or someone else’s idea) then they can make a film. We are told, by the Roger Corman school of film making that for a young film maker getting out there and just making low budget horror films is the number one way to hone their craft and learn their skills. So what would a young John Carpenter have achieved given a GoPro and a can of monster energy drink back in the early 1960s?
This impossible to answer question somehow takes us into talking about the low ($39K of...

Amid increasing global interest in films and TV series from Turkey, Berlin-based distribution and sales company Af-Media — which specializes in Turkish movies — is expanding beyond its core markets to new territories across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and possibly even South America.
Launched by Ali Fidan in 2011, Af-Media is a leading distributor of Turkish films in Germany — home to an estimated 3.5 million people of Turkish origin, the lion’s share of the approximately 5 million living in Europe — as well as in France, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland and the U.K.
The company is now moving to other European markets and key overseas territories in the Middle East and Asia, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, which recently ended a 35-year ban on movie theaters. “I would be very honored to present our titles in Saudi Arabia, and I’m sure we would attract large audiences,...

"You don't see the resemblance?" An official trailer has debuted for a dark fantasy sci-fi thriller titled Ayla, from an American director known only as "Elias". The story is about a man haunted by the mysterious death of his 4-year-old sister, who decides to bring her back to life 30 years later as an adult woman - "obsession becomes flesh". Obviously things turn out a bit weird, and only get weirder, and this trailer definitely hints at that. The cast of Ayla includes Tristan Risk as the titular Ayla, along with Nicholas Wilder, Dee Wallace, Sarah Schoofs, D'Angelo Midili, Bill Oberst Jr., and Andrew Sensenig. The footage in this trailer reminds me of Splice, in a way, which seems to be appropriate comparison. I'm not sure what to make of this, seems like it could be good, but it could also be awful and way too experimental. Check it out. Here's...

Screen Anarchy is happy to premiere the first teaser for Ayla, the new film from writer/director Elias Ganster (Gut). Elton, a man haunted by the mysterious death of his 4-year-old sister, brings her back to life thirty years later as an adult woman, with dire consequences. It is an interesting teaser, with hints of some body horror going on in there along with glimpses of the always fascinating Tristan Risk. Out of curiousity I looked up the meaning of her character's name Ayla. It is Hebrew and Turkish in origin and could either mean oak tree, halo or moonlight. I cannot say if any of that ends up being intentional on Ganster's part but nature does appear to weigh in thematically here, as...

Staring Jessica Cameron (Truth Or Dare), Tristan Risk (ABC’s Of Death 2), Tianna Nori (Clean Break), Sydney Kondruss (The Drownsman), Bobbie Phillips (Carnival Of Souls) and a slew of other Canadian actresses, Save Yourself tells the story of five female filmmakers en route to their big L.A. premiere. This thrilling, character driven horror is finishing post-production and looking forward to hitting the festival circuit this year. Save Yourself features strong, self-reliant characters while having fun with female stereotypes in the horror genre. Holy cats! Ol’ Jeremy Berg, the creator of s–t hot new Sci-Fi thriller The Device (a review of which is comin’ soon to this very website, so begin tremblin’ in anticipation right now!) just stumbled on in to the Crypt o’ Xiii!
Famous Monsters. Ya took the brainy approach on The Device, while most flicks in the alien abduction vein tend to go a bit “o’er tha top”, so to speak. Did this cause you any static?
Jeremy Berg. I really wanted to tell a story that was driven by the characters. The genesis of the idea was a simple concept: two sisters find an object in the woods that may or may not be of earthly origin. It was very simple but had a lot of potential. From there, we could explore how this object changes the characters and their relationships with one another.
I love alien abduction stories,...
