A solid end to the second series.

A very solid way to conclude the second series, it's a clever mystery, which sees a so called philanthropist shot, trouble is everyone has an alibi.

The mystery is one I enjoyed, but this episode was all about one thing, was Richard going to stay or go, they teased it for the last fifteen minutes or so. As someone who only picked the show up half way through Marshall's time, I was surprised to see this one end that way it did.

Richard has truly developed as a character as the series went on, I was surprised by how much is become attached to him, briefcase an all.

I had no idea it was Richard that named Harry the lizard, he'd stick around longer than any of the detectives.

Very good, 8/10.

I will miss Richard

Warning: Spoilers
Much as I love Kris Marshall as Humphrey, Richard was always my favourite DI and Ben Miller is a brilliant actor.

Guest starring Sean Pertwee
safenoe20 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Sean Pertwee, son of Jon Pertwee (who was a Doctor Who) plays Malcolm Powell in this episode. There are several Doctor Who connections in Death in Paradise, with another Doctor Who, Peter Davison, guest starring in another episode. In another episode, Sam Troughton, grandson of Patrick Troughton (another Doctor Who) guest starred.

Anyway, this is the season two finale, and it was a shock that Ben Miller left at the beginning of season three. Why oh why did the writers bump him off, really that was so silly. Anyway, I think DI Poole was by far the best DI of all, and it's a shame he wasn't able to continue.

Mumble

Warning: Spoilers
It is a plot we have seen before, and I feel sure I have even seen it in a later episode of 'DIP" - two shots, the lethal one first with a silencer, to create an alibi.

But the epidsode was spoiled by Lucy Davis as Vicky Woodward only ever speaking in a softly whispered mumble. When I turned the volume up enough to actually hear her, everyone else was shouting.

A Deadly Party
studioAT7 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Back before it became a bit formulaic and there had to be the jokey Dwayne subplot (were they ever even mildly amusing??) 'Death in Paradise' actually used to be a much better show than it is currently in the Ralph Little era.

The Ben Miller character wasn't too OTT, the sergeant (here it's Camille played by Sara Martins) actually had lots to do, and good chemistry with the lead.

Ok, so the plot here isn't actually that good, despite a plethora of famous faces as the suspect.

Very interesting to watch this currently (after the 2020 series) when the show isn't in my opinion at its best.

Not a favorite!

Warning: Spoilers
The second season of "Death in Paradise" has been very up and down to say the least. "Death on the Plantation" was great, but after that I haven't seen a very good episode (minus "A Dash of Sunshine). There have been good (like "Death in the Clinic" or "Death Onboard", but not fantastic ones. " A Deadly Party" continues the string of solid episodes, but sadly falls bit short.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great as always. The episode looks and sound wonderful. The cast is good too. Ben Miller steals every moment he's on screen.

. The mystery here was fine and there were some clever twists and turns here. The solution (more than one person committed the murder) was satisfying enough and most of the jokes landed.

But..

. There have been stronger murder mysteries in "Death in Paradise", which offered way more intrigue. I was not a huge fan of the case ( the story reminded me of "Arriving in Paradise" with it's complexity and couple of used ideas) and there are untied endings left in the story. For example: why was the bullet found in the book?

Overall, good, but not great episode.

7/10 HK
