- While attending a garden party hosted by Malcolm Powell, DI Poole and DS Bourday are called into action when a shot is fired. In the living room, they find Powell dead, shot through the heart. His personal assistant Vicky Woodward accuses Jack Roberts, who had arrived earlier, of killing her boss. The people closest to Powell all have alibis including Vicky, who was speaking to Camille in the garden and his son and son who were also accounted for. They find the car Roberts used to flee the scene and money bands indicating he had a lot of cash with him. An investigation reveals that Powell had left the UK after a money scam fell apart and that Roberts was one of the investors who lost money in Powell's scheme. That certainly provides the motive for Roberts wanting Powell dead but there's just one problem: Roberts died three years ago. Poole goes back to square one.—garykmcd
