Another predictable plot

Warning: Spoilers
What a surprise! Someone confesses to a crime because they think their father or mother or brother or sister or son or daughter did it. In yet another surprise twist (yeah) neither one of them did it. Then who could it be? The seldom-seen computer geek? One of the FBI agents? Or maybe the mother whose son got sent to prison because the murder victim framed her son? Also, always remember not to leave cryptic voice messages. Just say what you mean. Also, why kick McGee downstairs instead of bringing in yet another new agent? Why not hire a new head geek (troll) instead. Maybe the rest of the season will explain it.

Tight script and editing pays off

What a thrill to watch this terrific, pulse-pounding episode, reinvigorating "NCIS" after the show's inevitable decline in recent years due to the departure of Mark Harmon. Just when I was wondering why CBS was continuing with a hit show past its "Best use by" date, here's the answer.

Chris Waild's screenplay is amazing -it's as if a whole movie was pared down to the basic through-line, removing the flab, minimizing the necessary camaraderie and shtick, and making the story count. By focusing on Valderama's character, but carefully making him sort of the segment's MacGuffin with all his teammates pitching in as a team to save him. That's a formula for success and really true to the whole point of the show, as stipulated in the dialogue near the end.

The guest cast, especially Pilar Holland as Nick's sister (she had a small role years ago on NCIS I had forgotten all about) is fine, while the emphasis on the core regulars was terrific. Near the end I noticed how (dialogue permitting), the editing was amazingly fast-paced, with shots (especially reverse-shot cutting) reduced to only a second or two in duration, helping to maintain the breakneck pace. And the plot twists were ingenious, quite satisfying right up to the cryptic "wait for next week" sudden ending.

Episode 21 - 01

Warning: Spoilers
NCIS has been on the air for 21 seasons, which is a remarkable feat. I remember people thought there was no chance Gunsmoke's record would ever be passed, but Law and Order: SVU did it and now NCIS has.

The show is still okay and the addition of Alden Parker has given it some new life, but it is getting a little bit too storyline driven. I want to see the case of the week, with a few other elements mixed in. This is just too much carryover and multi-episode arcs which premium TV demands, but is not exactly what people want here.

A solid episode, although a predictable one with an expected ending for sure. Let's see how long Kim Matula sticks around, but that could be a good addition to the cast.
