Love is blind — or is it?
Netflix had an absolute smash hit on its hands from the moment Love Is Blind Season 1 premiered.
From its impeccable set design, down-to-earth hosts, and a relatable cast with a flair for drama, the show has it all.
At least, that's what it seems.
While its massive fan base is undeniable, it's hard to overlook the fact that a glaringly large portion of the population is unrepresented on Love Is Blind.
The concept of this reality dating series is that looks shouldn't matter when finding a partner to spend your life with. At least, that's what they tell us.
But as much as they tout that premise, they still happily and exclusively cast conventionally attractive, thin, and mostly white participants.
The producers also haven't explored opening up the series to include the LGBTQ+ community, a move that other similar shows have found successful.

The Ultimatum is back on Netflix and messier than ever. Season 2 of the partner-swapping reality show follows five (and later four) couples who can’t decide whether to get married to break up. After trial marriages with other cast members, each pair gets back together before making a final choice about their future.
Each season of The Ultimatum is filmed in a specific city. Season 1 took place in Austin, Texas, while the spinoff The Ultimatum: Queer Love was set in San Diego. So, where was The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On Season 2 filmed?

Netflix usually doesn’t make it super obvious where reality shows like The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On are filmed. But a little sleuthing reveals that filming for The Ultimatum Season 2 took place in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Reality television shows have been quite a crowd-pleaser since the advent of television. The Ott space has gotten a taste for it and managed to foray into this genre. Netflix itself has given a platform to so many shows, such as Love is Blind, Indian Matchmaking, Too Hot to Handle, In Real Love, What the Love! and The Ultimatum: Queer Love. These shows have multiple editions with many seasons under their belt, which proves there is an audience for this kind of content. Many take this seriously, and for the rest, it is just a guilty pleasure.
This ten-episode, overstretched dating reality show begins with the previous season’s hosts, Vanessa Lachey and Nick Lachey, bringing forward five couples who have given their respective partners an ultimatum to marry them. The whole idea behind this demand put forward by the partner is to understand their better half’s intention with this relationship.

On April 16, Netflix expected to deliver the second live telecast in the streamer’s history — a reunion special for Love Is Blind. An epilogue of sorts to the blind dating competition’s fourth season, it seemed like a relatively low-stakes exercise for the platform’s latest technology. But when an internal bug kept the episode from airing until the next day, it became apparent that stakes were, in reality, quite high. Fans flocked to social media in disappointment and collectively lost their minds. “I lost my mind,” recalls Love Is Blind creator Chris Coelen. “I was sitting in front of my TV like, ‘What is happening? Give me the updates. What’s going on?’ “

The season three (and potential series) finale of Ted Lasso delivered record streaming numbers for Apple TV+.
Viewers watched 1.24 billion minutes’ worth of the Emmy-winning comedy for the week of May 29-June 4 — the first time any show on Apple’s streaming service has topped a billion minutes. The season three finale, released May 31, accounted for 529 million of those minutes (about 42.5 percent of the total), which Nielsen says is the highest weekly total for a single episode of Ted Lasso.
Since it premiered in August 2020, Ted Lasso has drawn more than 25 billion minutes of viewing in the United States, per Nielsen. Through June 4, the season two finale was the biggest single episode at 960 million minutes — a total that the season three closer seems likely to pass, given that it got more than halfway there in a single week.

Still processing the emotional roller coaster that was The Ultimatum: Queer Love? Well, break out your silver wine glasses once again, because it’s time to go back into the pods. Netflix revealed the first teaser for Love Is Blind Season 5 during its Tudum fan event in São Paolo, Brazil, on Saturday, June 17. In the video teaser (above), we meet the first two cast members from the season as they get to know each other on a pod date. The pair starts off listing what they’re looking for in a partner. As the woman responds, she wants “intelligence” and “dependability,” but she also wants someone who won’t be scared away by her history of “crappy relationships.” One of those relationships ended in divorce, but her caller on the other side of the pod wall isn’t turned off by her rocky romantic history — he’s been engaged once before himself.

Fans are saying farewell to Manifest and Never Have I Ever.
For the week of June 5 to June 11, the series dominated Netflix’s English-language series list. Manifest as Season 4, Part 2 took the top spot with 78.15M hours viewed in the week after it debuted on June 2. The enthusiasm surrounding the final episodes also boosted Season 1 back into the Top 10 with 18.18M hours viewed.
Devi Vishwakumar’s senior year was met with near equal excitement, as Never Have I Ever Season 4jumped to No. 2 on the list following its June 8 debut. In the first few days of release, Season 4 racked up 76.21M hours viewed. It would not be surprising to see Never Have I Ever tally another successful week during the next measurement window, when it will have been available for the entire seven-day span.
Those new releases pushed Fubar to No. 3, though the series still drew 42.28M hours viewed after two weeks at No.

When Netflix revealed that actor JoAnna Garcia Swisher would be taking over for Nick and Vannesa Lachey as host of The Ultimatum: Queer Love, the announcement was met with widespread excitement. The Lacheys have become synonymous with the Netflix dating universe, but in recent months, fans have called for their removal, largely due to their disastrous performance during the "live" Love Is Blind Season 4 reunion. With public approval for the Lacheys declining, it made perfect sense to introduce a fresh face — especially alongside the streamer's first queer dating show.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher knows motherhood is a balancing act. "I struggle with it just as much as every mom does. I mean, we're pulled in so many different directions," she tells Popsugar. Still, she wants all moms to know that they should give themselves credit where credit is due.
"We're multitasking to the supreme, so I think it's so important to really just give yourself a little grace and to know that we can't do everything every day," she says. "As hard as it may seem when you're in the heat of the moment, even stepping away for just a few minutes is so important."
Swisher certainly has a lot going on. She serves as the host of Netflix's "The Ultimatum: Queer Love," a spinoff of "The Ultimatum" that focuses on queer couples exclusively, and stars in "Sweet Magnolias," which is set to release its third season in July.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Ultimatum: Queer Love Episodes 1-8.] The Ultimatum: Queer Love had a serious love triangle form when a passionate love sparked between Xander Boger and Yoly Rojas, two of the season’s ultimatum givers. Xander had issued an ultimatum to partner Vanessa Papa, and Yoly to partner Mal Wright. Each entered into their own trial marriages, but Xander and Yoly were the only ones who ended up seriously falling for someone other than the partners with whom they entered the Netflix dating experiment. The Ultimatum: Queer Love Episode 9 finale comes out Wednesday, June 7 on Netflix. In it, viewers will see Yoly’s answer to Mal’s proposal given in Episode 8, as well as learn the outcome of Xander and Vanessa’s decision day. The trailer for the finale shows that Yoly and Xander share an intimate moment on decision day. The circumstances of that meeting are for the finale to reveal.

It’s official, The Mother is one of Netflix’s most popular films of all time.

With 229.30M total hours viewed, it is now No. 8 on the Most Popular English Film List, replacing Purple Hearts and bumping The Irishman off the list entirely.
The film still has time to make its way up the most popular list. Its 28-day premiere measurement window will end on June 11, and it is already inching fairly close to its next two opponents on the list — Extraction with 231.3M hours viewed and The Adam Project with 233.2M hours viewed.

Toto, we’re not in “Carol” anymore. Despite the major shift in LGBTQ representation over the last decade, reality television has been slow on the uptick. Sure, we have the twin crown jewels of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “Queer Eye,” which both came to define the gold standard of reality competition and makeover shows, respectively. But when it comes to the reality dating show — that pinnacle of heteronormative culture that’s singlehandedly keeping antiquated beliefs about relationships alive — nobody knows what to do with the queers. That’s a real oversight, especially considering that pass-around party bottoms and U-hauling lesbians know a thing or two about high-stakes drama.
While recent LGBTQ reality shows like MTV’s “The Real Friends of WeHo” and Prime’s “Tampa Baes” attempted to start their own thing, launching a new franchise is hard work, and it often doesn’t have the fanbase to sustain interest.

The Ultimatum: Queer Love features some of the messiest romantic moments on any dating reality show. Because everyone in the five original couples is queer, there are even more possibilities for post-breakup pairings, and from the start, it’s clear that everyone is open to recoupling with just about anyone else. And things get real deep, real fast within the new pairings. When the couples get back together with their original partners, that makes things all the more complicated, and all the more compelling to watch. Heading into the finale June 7, it makes each person’s ultimate choice even harder to predict.

The world of “The Ultimatum” has officially expanded with the new spinoff, “The Ultimatum: Queer Love.” Following the same format as “Marry or Move On,” the first season of Netflix’s reality show, five pairs are at a turning point in their relationship and one has given an ultimatum. At the end of the eight-week experience — during which they enter a trial marriage with someone new — each individual must decide if they want to marry their original partner, be with their new match or leave alone.
In “Queer Love,” the group is made up of women and nonbinary cast members, half of whom are looking to marry their more reluctant partners — or so they say. Here, executive producer and Kinetic Content CEO Chris Coelen breaks down the differences in casting, the inconsistency in pronouns throughout the season, the choice to cast someone straight as a host and much more.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Ultimatum: Queer Love Episodes 1-4.] Vanessa Papa joins the ranks of Netflix reality dating show villains in The Ultimatum: Queer Love. After being given an ultimatum by Xander Boger, her partner of four years, the 30-year-old dove into the experiment more excited to wade through the dating pool than her ex and the other cast members. Fully leaning into a reality show format in which you agreed to appear is more than acceptable. In fact, some of the cast members from Seasons 1 and 2 likely would have had a better time if they just went with the flow. What’s different in the debut season of Queer Love, though, is that Vanessa found herself among a group of women and non-binary people who, once they gleaned she was “there for the wrong reasons” (the classic villain descriptor for this genre), did not let her intentions go unchecked. The tension began...

JoAnna Garcia Swisher is taking on a whole new kind of role. You may have seen her as Cheyenne Hart Montgomery in "Reba," or more recently as Maddie Townsend in Netflix's "Sweet Magnolias," but her latest gig on Netflix's "The Ultimatum: Queer Love" marks her first time as a host.

The last two decades have seen a swath of reality dating shows sweep on — and sometimes off — TV screens, with series like The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Married at First Sight, Love Island, Are You the One?, FBoy Island and 90-Day Fiancé garnering notable and even rabid followings.
But much of that programming, despite ongoing efforts to racially diversify casting, has largely reflected one type of relationship: straight couples. Of course, there’s also been a handful of series — Logo TV’s Finding Prince Charming, Bravo’s Boy Meets Boys, Max’s 12 Dates of Christmas and one entire season of Are You the One? — that have featured either entirely gay or a notable number of LGBTQ contestants.
But mostly queer people are sprinkled in if they’re present at all (think Dating Around, Ex on the Beach, Bachelor in Paradise and The One That Got Away), a piece of a larger...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Ultimatum: Queer Love Episodes 1-4.] Even though The Ultimatum: Queer Love stars run circles around other reality dating casts when it comes to emotional maturity (mindful conflict resolution between lovers? What a concept!), that doesn’t mean this LGBTQ+-focused love story is devoid of drama. For better or for worse, reality dating shows always have a villain. And Vanessa Papa became that foe in the first four episodes of The Ultimatum: Queer Love, streaming on Netflix as of May 24. From the creators of Love Is Blind, The Ultimatum: Queer Love brings five couples together for a life-changing experiment. One person from each couple has delivered an ultimatum to their partner: either they get married or they move on. The twist: Each couple breaks up, dates other people, chooses a “trial marriage” spouse, and then lives with them for three weeks. Then, they move in with their original partners...

It's easy to mistake Vanessa for The Ultimatum: Queer Love's villain. In the first four episodes (which dropped Wednesday on Netflix), Vanessa, a 30-year-old woman who identifies as pansexual, finds herself at the center of the drama over and over again: She makes an enemy of Yoly, who ends up matched with Vanessa's longtime partner Xander; gets into a heated confrontation with Lexi; and suggests the group turn their first cocktail party into a "polyamorous orgy," a joke that does not play well among her marriage-minded co-stars. Lexi even goes so far as to call Vanessa an "atomic bomb" who's determined to ruin the experience of everyone around her.

Must-watch comedy series, eye-opening documentaries and an expansion of the “Bridgerton” universe are among the noteworthy additions to Netflix this month. May 12 sees the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix original film “The Mother,” in which she plays an assassin lured back in for one last job. And on May 23, the documentary “Victim/Suspect” examines how sexual assault victims too often get turned into suspects when they report their assaults.
“Queen Charlotte,” the “Bridgerton” prequel series, arrives on May 4 while a new season of Tim Robinson’s sketch series “I Think You Should Leave” drops on May 30. Netflix recently announced it would be investing $2.5 billion into South Korean programming. Before Squid Game season 2 comes down the pike, however, the first seeds of that investment will bear fruit for Netflix in May 2023.
Netflix’s list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by the May 12 release of Korean series Black Knight. Set “in a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution,” this show will follow world-saving deliverymen known as “Black Knights.” Other international offerings this month include Japanese sumo drama Sanctuary on May 4 and Spanish crime thriller Muted on May 19.
Netflix’s domestic TV options this month include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on May 4. That will be followed by post-apocalyptic animated comedy Mulligan on May 12 and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV debut Fubar on May 25. And for those hoping for “triples,” I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson premieres on May 30.
On the movie side of things, Netflix has an unusually busy month.

Netflix’s “The Ultimatum: Queer Love” will have a new host. When the franchise is extended, JoAnna Garcia Swisher will guide the couples, instead of Nick and Vanessa Lachey, who hosted the first season (and lead Netflix’s “Love Is Blind.)”
