Upright.

Warning: Spoilers
Once again, built up to another emotionally-fueled finale. Not quite as good as season one's, but easily the strongest episode of this season. They decide to tell Billie that Lucky's her father, but she'd already become aware of it through a letter by their mother, with the assistance of Meg. Which is done quite well, along with the father/daughter duet. In saying that, it doesn't make the season a success, because it was all pretty much a bunch of nonsense and lacked consistent quality moments, but it's a good ending. Not sure if there's another season coming, I'd say not since that one hardly had any substance.

Season Two Review
southdavid16 December 2022
I reviewed the first season of "Upright" back in January of 2020. I said that I enjoyed it and liked that it didn't outstay it's or push too hard against the barriers of realism. I'd say that I liked this second season two, but I would say that it touches on the same sort of areas that the first run did and maybe it's harder to argue that this isn't a touch redundant.

Three years later, Lucky (Tim Minchin) is struggling with his alcohol intake, whilst maintaining a relationship with Avery (Jessie McNamee) and trying to arrange to see Billie (Asmara Feik) who still doesn't know that he is her biological father. At a particularly low ebb, Meg (Milly Alcock) shows up out of the blue and asks him to join her on a quest to find her mother, ostensibly to tell her about her brothers passing. Though a visit from Billie is days away, Lucky agrees.

So, it's a second road trip for the pair (although slightly more air travel this time) whilst they reconnect, as they've not seen each other since the went their separate ways three years previous. They track her mother's feint trail through various locations that happen to have been places were Lucky has previously lived and, departed in less than glorious circumstances. The spark between Minchin and Allcock comes back almost immediately though, and their banter is good. The first season was certainly a dramedy but this run seems to dial up the emotion even further and I'm not ashamed to admit that I was crying during the final episode.

As I said though, it's basically a redux of the first plot of the first season, a slightly unbelievable journey of pain and discovery, and there's some similar stretches to credibility when it comes to people bumping back into each other. Whilst I'd say that this season was inferior to the first, I still argue that it was good, with moments of real emotion and some great performances. Not sure I need any more though, unless the characters are going to develop.

Enough's Enough
Prismark1017 June 2023
Enough's Enough and they certainly are not kidding. Here is a big hint. If there is going to be a third series of Upright. Make sure there is an actual plot.

Well Meg and Lucky escape from the commune, despite Lucky not having his phone. They manage to fly back home. Only Lucky's family decided to call the police. Not knowing what happened to him.

The rest of the finale was whether to tell Billie that Lucky is her actual father. Flashbacks with Lucky's mother indicated that Billie already knew.

By this point Meg is very much in the background. Maybe it is a good thing that Meg and Lucky had their own heart to heart in the car. How much Lucky missed Meg after they got back after their first adventure.

A disappointing ending to an inconsistent second series.

Episode 208

Warning: Spoilers
This did not have as much of an adventure aspect to it as it seems like almost everything was wrapped up and we just had Lucky explaining to his family what happened. That was fine, and the slight twist around the parental revelation was well-done, but I feel like it was a bit too peaceful for this show. We went from a crazy cult and last minute escapes to a bunch of people sitting around the kitchen table and crying.

But what a ride this show has been and what a journey for the characters. This is proof of what TV can be and how it can be both funny and thought-provoking at the same time. Hope against hope that there is a third season somehow.
