Scandal has been around for quite a while, and has just started it's seventh season. After it being hugely popular, I erred away from the show, not wanting to watch it, because it was so hyped up; however, after accidentally watching an episode from the sixth season and getting dragged into the plot line, I decided to watch the first few episodes and give the show a chance. After watching the first episode ever, I can definitely say that this is one of my new favourite shows.
In the first episode of Scandal, we meet Quinn, a young woman who is hired by a mysterious, but seemingly famous, Olivia Pope. After we are introduced, things kick off rather quick, and we are shown very early on that Olivia doesn't take bull from anyone. Helping a war veteran who is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Quinn is face with the task of keeping up with the new, fast pace of her job. However, Olivia doesn't just have the war veteran to deal with, when her old boss, the President of the United States, asks her help to stop a young woman spreading rumours and lies about him.
It's very clear to see just from the first episode that all the characters in this show are well developed, with their own personalities, and not just made to be two dimensional characters to cover a few series like a few shows that are being aired around these days. It's very refreshing to come to a television show that was made in 2011/2012, and to find very strong female characters, straight from the bat. Strong black characters as well in the line up leads this to be an absolute stunner of a show, on character list alone. Strong characters, who have weaknesses, and have real problems like everyone in the real world, makes these characters incredibly three dimensional, and real.
The plot of this first episode really amazed me, and really showed that the creators of the show did research, and looked into real world problems. I've never felt more absorbed into a show than I have the first episode of Scandal, and I definitely want to watch more. Focusing on problems that people have every day was a really good decision on their part, and I found this to be absolutely wonderful. I felt I could connect to people throughout this episode. I felt like, this was happening just over the road in my town, this is a show that feels more real than most television shows, ever made.
I would definitely recommend this; this is the first political / law drama that I have thoroughly enjoyed watching as much, and I will definitely be watching more. I cannot wait to watch through the first season and see what happens further on.
