Best episode of the season!
thefoochie23 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What a wonderful episode filled with hilarious and cringe moments (in a good way). Gene's storyline is getting interesting. I like that he's trying his hardest to redeem himself by buying a house for his son. And that dinner scene tho... that was the definition of cringe, it was so awkward and uncomfortable. I really feel like gene's apology was sincere, but I also understand why his ex hasn't forgiven him. Amazing scene!

Barry's scenes were somehow able to top gene's. In a hilarious scene, Barry gets advice from hank and cristobal on how to get sally to see the "real him." This leads to him going to Sally's house, and he ends up describing the various ways he could psychologically torture the lady who cancelled Sally's show. Barry's monologue had me dying of laughter but also made me extremely uncomfortable at the same time. That's the thing I love about this show, it can make you feel awkward and laugh simultaneously.

Speaking of sally, she surprisingly wasn't that insufferable in this episode. Apart from the scene when she went to the coffee shop looking for attention, I actually felt really bad for her. No one deserves to have their show cancelled after 12 hours, no matter how bad it is. The woman in charge explains that she decides to cancel shows based on an arbitrary algorithm. I bet this is how the heads of Netflix decided to cancel The OA and Archive 81 lol. By the way, sally kicking Barry out of her house was completely justified. Although Barry's monologue was hilarious, from her perspective he sounded like a lunatic.

Cristobal's wife comes to town, and at the same time, cops decide to raid the heroin base. This leads to a hysterical scene where both groups attack the base at once, all while one of NoHo hank's men films it. Cristobal's wife also finds out that he's in a relationship with hank. Welp, both of them are screwed. I have a bad feeling about where this storyline is headed. Will cristobal betray his wife, or his boyfriend?

Overall, this is an excellent episode that manages to progress the plot in all 4 storylines equally. Not a single second wasted, every scene was fantastic! 9/10.

Did anyone else notice the homage to Thief?
Alleycat7723 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Love this show. It gets better and better. This is the episode we needed to get this season on track. Bonus: If you've ever seen the movie "Thief" directed my Michael Mann, you might understand the nod to the movie when Barry shows the photograph of "what he is about." Please tell me I'm not the only one that noticed this. Hint: Willie Nelson.

Better but could be "even" better

Warning: Spoilers
What I liked: Sally getting taken down a peg, I honestly nearly stopped watching the entire series after Sally's premiere night last week (it was like listening to nails on a chalkboard for 5 minutes straight).

What I didn't like: Barry was barely in this episode, in a show called "Barry". We should probably see more of him in a show with his name in the title.

What I loved: The brief moments we saw Barry. I absolutely loved his creep out attempt to get in Sally's good graces again.

Girl, take him up on his offer.

May the Algorithm Guide Us All
MamadNobari9723 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is indeed a crazyshtshow.

As usual it is with Barry, that can develop a plot point over some episodes and just destroy everything in it in the matter of a second, this episode just takes a huge sht on Sally and the achievements she accomplished over the previous episodes this season.

And they show in each and every episode, that nothing is permanent and everything can turn into sht immediately.

I went from not liking Sally and getting annoyed by her, bordering on hating her even, in seasons 1 and 2, to liking her and feeling bad for her. Natalie is a really good character and a good friend to Sally and Sally takes her for granted. Natalie comforting Sally in this episode was really sweet and nice to watch.

Season 3 continues to give us some dark comedy golds in every scene and this episode is no exception. The serious moments have some hilarious bits that don't ruin the seriousness but make them even better.

Hank and Cristobal can't get a day off, but the writers know they shouldn't waste time and just throw the next plot in there and give NoHo Hank no time to breathe. And justifiably so. Who leaves his wife and children to go live with a guy he loves? I know we're not supposed to like any character in the show and the show doesn't try to depict them as likable either, but my point is that he had it coming, and with his wife now in the picture, their story got much more interesting.

We also have that hilarious scene of police and Cristobal's wife raiding the Chechen plant and it was comedy gold, the funniest scene in this episode.

It's also interesting to see a development on the police part and bringing Barry's old military buddy who got shot in the mouth into the picture, and things are gonna get more complicated. I don't remember if they said he survived or died, but I assumed he died? So I don't know if this was a reveal that he actually survived or that we knew already, but I doubt that's the case cause they would've kept it a secret to surprise us, and they did.

Gene making amends and saying sorry to everyone and making himself feel good is a new developing plot in this episode and they do a good job of not making it boring, and also not making everyone accept his apology and say "wow your such a nice guy now, I accept your apology". And it seems like they can dedicate an episode, even a season to Gene apologizing to every person in L. A!

Next, we have Sally coming to her apartment crying, only to find Barry, and when Barry sits next to her to console her, she gets a taste of what real Barry looks like. And the writers actually made me believe that Sally would actually like Barry's idea of spooking that lady and would say yes to it. But to my surprise, she actually got disgusted and kicked Barry out. So good job to the writers for actually knowing how to "subvert expectations".

So there's no way to predict where this show is going and how they're gonna end it, and that's the beauty of it. I can't even remotely guess what's gonna happen in the next episode, let alone the whole show.

Oh, and we also have Fuches spreading his evil everywhere again and releasing those wolves to Barry. So far, two of them are down, but we shall wait and see what the other will do to him, or rather Sally since the address is Sally's house.

But those are not the most shocking things, the most jaw-dropping moment for me (yes, my jaw was actually droppened) was the last scene of course. It was at first shocking but then became the goofiest thing this show has ever done, even more goofier than Gene dropping his gun in episode 1 of this season. I know that Barry has plot armor and at this point, everyone that wants to kill him is gonna fail miserably and in the goofiest way possible, but it's in the character for them and it's not that far-fetched to call it a plot hole and plot armor and bad writing. It IS plot armor, but it's in character for them. The mother and the son obviously have never touched a gun in their life and don't know gun safety, so it makes sense for them to fk up this big. They could have dragged this one too and made them like confront him later and maybe even shoot him in the leg or shoulder or something - which I've read that getting shot in the shoulder can actually kill you, so it's another unrealistic movie trope - and Barry still could've killed them both, but the writers chose to end(?) it here and it fits the show and those characters perfectly.

Great ending scene and a great episode all-around.

Vet Bros Don't Like Women
sweller229 August 2023
Amazing how much hate there is in the comments for Sarah Goldberg and the character of Sally in general. Does this have something to do with the varied audience for Barry? There is certainly a population of vetbros and vetbro wannabes that watch this show to see Barry being a killer. The character of Sally - an independent woman who is written with the same complexity as the men - may not align with what these guys want to see from a woman onscreen. Then again, maybe this isn't the show for them? It's tough to write mid-series reviews with the benefit of hindsight, but Sally strikes me as one of the best women characters on TV today.

Still on pace to be a great...
mooveephantom26 May 2022
...season. Some great twists and turns. It's good to see Gene be somewhat redeemed and kind of happy. Barry is still a psycho and almost unlikeable but there is something there that makes you want to see his story. With Sally, urgh it's just impossible to like her or feel sorry for her. Just a bad character and bad acting by Goldberg. You can tell in this season that it's just going to go bad for a lot of characters. The final scene of this episode was just sad but weird. How we like it.

Albert
safenoe10 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
James Hiroyuki Liao returns as Albert, on the hunt in the cop killer case where it appears Barry is ruled innocent for now. I kind of miss Gene's acting school and his antics with the students, and I wonder what would have been if the pandemic didn't strike the world and shut down production of Barry for two years.

Season 3 is darker than the first two combined I guess, so I wonder what is in store for season 4.

I hope they can stick the landing
ButtonFilms3727 May 2022
As someone who loved every single episode from the first 2 seasons...this one has been a struggle for me. Aside from Gene and Hank, I really don't care about any of the characters or their storylines so far. All this stuff with Sally and her show and the streaming executives is putting me to sleep! Fingers crossed they can bounce-back with the next episode.

Plot holes
kbrenkb16 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I just can't get behind a story when characters do completely unreasonable things. A PI shows up at your door randomly and says he knows who killed your husband but he provides no proof of this and then the wife and son proceed to purchase a pistol and plan to kill the guy? I'm sorry but reasonable people do not do this. We all require evidence do we not?

Sarah goes woke and gets broke!
moritzherz16 April 2023
This show got much better in the last two episodes because they satirised woke media and entertainment by making Sarah woke.

Now her show has been cancelled by some reason and you can see that the guys at this company do not have a clue of how to make a great show. They just rely on some algorithm. Man, this could just be the reality for studios like Disney, Marvel or Pixar. I love that they satirise this important topic!

And now Sarah is broke and cries. Maybe that will change her mind about Barry? No, she just sends him away although he just wanted to be there for her. This is insane.

Thank you for doing that HBO!

S3.E5 - A Slower Episode [7/10]
panagiotis199327 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S3. E5) My Reaction / Review for Barry Season 3 Episode 5 ''crazytimesh*tshow'': Episode 4 was good and I gave it a rating of 8.6/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Sally's show is canceled? That sucks. It still doesn't make sense that Barry and Sally broke up. The Bolivians attacked the Chechens, I didn't see that coming, I thought after Barry killed many of them this war would stop. It seems like Gene has regret over his past actions and he is really sorry, that's good. After all of this maybe there is still a chance for Barry and Sally to be together again? Overall this episode was a bit slow and not that exciting but still good. My rating is 7/10.

Episode 305
bobcobb30112 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After all of the big developments the last couple of episodes this felt really lackluster. I did like seeing Laura San Giacomo and Joe Mantegna back on TV, but other than the streaming service cancellation announcement, there just wasn't much humor here.
