Dexter does not take long to find the next victims. He pretends to have been stabbed in order to attract the attention of two EMT bad guys that have been selling organs of unsuspecting individuals they were supposed to help. He is relentless in his quest to deal with all the bad people he gets his hands on. A nightly trip on his boat to dispose of the bodies is the rule.
Harrison has a new nanny. She is the young sister of Angel Batista. The young woman, Jamie, a college student, has developed a nice rapport with the toddler. As Dexter comes home, he finds Angel at the new place he bought next to the old unit he had, in order to have more room. Angel acts as though being guilty of being with his attractive younger sister. Jamie and Angel both recommend highly a catholic school for Harrison.
Deb accompanies her brother when he takes Harrison for an interview at the new school. The nun in charge, of admission is puzzled by Dexter's answers as he confesses he does not identify with anything in matters of religious beliefs, something that is baffling to the nun. To compound on the problem, as Dexter is leaving the school, he sees a lot of paintings depicting God in a somber manner. Dexter is not completely sure he wants his son in that environment.
Maria LaGuerta is seen during her promotion to Captain. The ceremony is attended by all her colleagues. At the end of the presentation, as Maria is preparing to leave the parking area, the police chief who was instrumental in her promotion, pays her a visit. Maria's ascent in the ranks is partially the product of her saving the man from a possible scandal when she found his name in the address book of a prominent hooker. Dexter has decided to attend his upcoming high school reunion. The main reason for going is to deal with former jock Joe Walker, who married Janet, the only girl that was kind to the nerdy Dexter in those days. Janet who supposedly committed suicide, had died under strange conditions and a drop of blood found in one of her nails, which was not her own, must be compared to match against the police evidence in the file. Her husband Joe Walker was never a suspect in the case. Dexter, who hates going to the party must figure out a way to get a sample from Joe, something that proves to be difficult, but eventually Dexter prevails, being sure now Joe killed Janet, so he must make him pay for it.
Two men are seen rowing a boat in what appears to be the Everglades. They are looking for a water snake, but not any one will suffice. They get lucky in getting a pregnant one. Later, the two men approach a street fruit vendor. The men have come prepared to do something to this poor man, acting as though they are part of some kind of cult. A passerby called the police to report the missing man from the stand. When the police and Dexter arrive, they find what appear to be intestines, which they think must belong to the missing man. When the body turns up two Greek letters are shown clearly on the man's stomach that has been cut open. Dexter decides to open the stitches and seven baby water snakes come out of the body.
Dexter succeeds in getting Joe Walker out of commission and takes him to the place where he will do the ultimate deed, avenging Janet. He has trouble though as he attempts to deliver the final blow because of the religious tattoo on Joe Walker's chest. Quinn, who wanted to surprise Deb that night, takes her to a restaurant. Quinn does not know how to ask her to marry him. He excuses himself to go to the men's room to rehearse. Deb sees a man enter the restaurant shooting randomly, she answers back, firing her own gun and she is shot.
The start of the sixth season of "Dexter" was worth waiting for, judging by the first episode. Dexter is one of the favorites from the viewing public. Part of the appeal is that one sees in him a sort of avenging angel that takes care of the criminals that cause so much harm and are able to get away with their murders. The first episode was directed by John Dahl. The screenplay is by Scott Buck, a frequent contributor to the program and based on Jeff Lindsay criminal novels.
Michael C. Hall is impressive as Dexter, now happily identified with the character. He delivers deadpan performances with his quiet no-nonsense style. The regular characters are well matched by the supporting cast. Jennifer Carpenter, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, Lauren Velez and David Zayas, and James Remar show good chemistry together. The guest stars are Colin Hanks and Edward James Olmos, who did not have much to do on the opener.
