Slow with some good characters, but a script full of holes
PeterM2719 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This drama, which takes as its premise the unpromising idea that people who are dying of thirst discover themselves, works on some levels and fails on others.

The film looks beautiful, filmed in the sunlit expanses of the outback, and the characters are promising - there is Minna, the Russian immigrant geologist who has been living in the outback house for some years and wants to stay, even when the mining company who lease the house to her demand she leave and stop delivering her water, Boyce the mining company rep whose job it is to convince her to leave (he even tries to tie her up and kidnap her), and Kit and Zac - two young runaways whose car breaks down near the house.

When they are trapped in isolated house, the four strangers become closer as it becomes clearer they will all die.

Though quite well acted, I found the script a bit stilted in places, and some characters did things that did not seem in character - Boyce for example, overstepped the mark by tieing up Minna, and then he tied her in a very clumsy way so that she escaped and destroyed his fuel tank, meaning they were both trapped with no way of getting back. Why would all the fuel be in a drum on the back of the trunk when the truck's tank was almost empty - he was there for a day or two - why didn't he fill the truck's tank ready for the return trip. The plot seemed contrived to trap the four too far from water to walk for help.

Also, the characters didn't look like they were dying of thirst, even though they said they were. They were lucid and full of energy up to the end.

Apart from that, the characters were likeable (except for Zac who was a pain), and the photography made it attractive.

Unrealistic Premises for a Superficial Story Line
gg-742-68810910 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The Australian desert provides a scenic setting for this movie. Unfortunately, we don't get to see much of it; almost the entire movie is filmed in or around a cabin in the desert. Adding to the monotony is a sparse cast of only four characters.

The story revolves around the four characters who are stranded in the desert without water, transportation, and communication capability with the outside world.

When the movie begins, Minna is living alone in the desert with enough food for her to plan on living in the desert cabin for the next six months. She also has a water tank containing a plentiful supply for her to have been watering a tree she's planted in front of her cabin.

Boyce arrives at the cabin to evict Minna because her lease has been canceled. Minna does not want to leave and, when physically forced by Boyce to leave, decides to sabotage him by puncturing the fuel tank on his truck. (If you wonder why she's so adamant about not leaving to take such a measure, you'll need better luck than I had to find a convincing reason in the movie.) Before Minna could use her computer to call in help to take Boyce away, two teenagers passing nearby encounters car trouble. Minna and Boyce go out to find the broken down car and to offer help.

The teenagers steal Boyce's truck and uses up what little remaining fuel to get to Minna's cabin. We're told the youngsters are fugitives from police and for that reason they destroyed the computer to break contact with the outside world. The two also exhaust the water supply at the cabin by liberally washing their hands and hair. They did this despite having carried no water with them on their persons or in their broken down car even though their travel plan involved driving into the middle of a vast desert. At this point, the characters have set the nonsensical premise of the movie by knowingly putting themselves into a situation where they have no transportation, no communication to the outside, and no water in the desert.

If you expect the rest of the movie to offer clever escape plans (something like siphoning fuel from the teenagers's car to use in the truck) or arduous efforts of survival, you'll be disappointed. What you'll likely get is more nonsensical drivel.

THIRST - My Review
heletia20029 January 2013
To be honest when I first saw this advertised I wasn't really interested as it's not my usual type of movie (being a SciFi/Fantasy nut) until I noticed that Myles Pollard (ex McLeod's Daughters) was one of the lead roles and as I've always been impressed with Myles I thought it would be worth watching after all, so I brought it.

Wow! What a powerful film! Let me say it's NOT for children, as this is a story about survival in the desert without water and has some rather 'dark' moments included. The scenery is absolutely stunning and it shows what can be achieved with a good compelling script while only using a "simple" set and very few cast. I quickly found myself drawn to these people and wanting the best for them as though they were friends (and not simply actors in a movie) whilst glued to my chair for almost the entire length of the film. Very well filmed, written, produced etc with a terrific cast. I do recommend it and I even "WANT" to watch it again (which is unusual for me). Well done everyone. :)

Thirst contains truly beautiful scenery and a captivating story.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, it was such an original storyline that captured many emotions and a range of themes.

The backdrop of the movie would have been challenging to film in, but the result is just brilliant. So glad to find an Australian movie of this quality.

I was left thinking about the movie for some days afterward, it's the kind of story that makes you think beyond watching it.

I'd definitely recommend watching the movie, like I said, it really is great to see an Australian film of this caliber.

Not my kind of movie but loved it.

It has a few flaws, some will find it boring or drawn out. It's one of those movies that's not everyone's cup of tea and certainly will never to be a Hollywood hit, yet will get a cult following by those who love a unique Australian move.
