Photo: 'The Muppets'/Disney In high school, much like all on-trend teenagers, I went through a Muppets phase. I binged every episode of The Muppets Show, I had every character’s stuffed animal counterpart, if I could, I would have gotten Muppets decals on my car and the only thing that stopped me was the fact that I didn’t have a car. Slowly as I entered college, I forgot about the Muppets. But when you are bored in quarantine and start digging around your childhood room, you unearth some things from your past. Sure, for “normal” people they might find some old rock posters or maybe an old and long forgotten about a stash of “oregano”, but I found my Muppets DVD set. I watched a few movies and immediately, I realized why I loved the Muppets back in high school. The Muppets 101: a Frog, a Pig, a Bear,...

A Nicolas Cage-led scripted series about “Tiger King’s” Joe Exotic is in the works at Amazon Prime Video, TheWrap has learned.
The project, which is based on Leif Reigstad’s Texas Monthly article “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild,” has been in development at CBS TV Studios and Imagine Entertainment since May.
Here’s the logline for the potential show, which is not to be confused with Kate McKinnon’s Joe Exotic scripted series, which was ordered by NBC, Peacock and USA Network: The story centers around Joe Shreibvogel, an eccentric, exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma who fights to keep his park — even at the risk of losing his sanity. The series will live in the lion’s den with Joe, explore how he became Joe Exotic, and how he lost himself to a character of his own creation.

Amazon Prime Video has taken in for development a scripted series starring Nicolas Cage as the infamous Joe Exotic, made a household name by the hugely popular Netflix docuseries Tiger King. The project, which had been in the works at CBS TV Studios, hails from Brian Grazer, American Vandal showrunner Dan Lagana, and Paul Young.
The yet untitled series was taken out to buyers in May, with Amazon quickly emerging as its likely destination. Negotiations for the project were in their final stages when NBCUniversal last month gave a mega pickup to Ucp’s Joe Exotic (working title), a limited series starring Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin, which received a joint straight-to-series order by NBC, Peacock and USA.

Every so often, a movie comes along that words cannot serviceably justify. When you’re a horror degenerate like myself, that “so often” timeframe is a little more frequent. Adam Mason’s Pig is one such title; a despicable, mean-spirited, tragically pointless torture bomb. So sickening that it’s been hidden since 2010 without release, minus a live world premiere on website Bloody Disgusting. Pig: The Final Screenings read new promotional materials, because it’s set to be destroyed after South by Southwest 2017. At least I can say “I’ve seen Pig!” when horror buffs discuss lost movies years from now? Whatever that’s worth.

With little over a month to go until Austin plays host to SXSW 2017 for another year, organizers of the annual showcase have announced that James Franco’s drama The Disaster Artist has been added to the stacked lineup.
Based on Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s non-fiction book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, Franco’s passion project is set to recount the infamous story behind The Room, Tommy Wiseau’s widely-derided pic that has since gone on to become something of a cult classic. No release date has been set, but we know that the feature will be written and directed by Franco, who stars as the eccentric Wiseau, and features a cast comprised of Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, and former Community star Alison Brie. Bryan Cranston and Zach Braff are among those set to cameo.

SXSW is mayhem. Mayhem, I tell you! And this year it will also screen Mayhem, a new film by Joe Lynch (pictured above). The midnighters program at SXSW has been announced and it consists of eight world premieres, including Joe Lynch's Mayhem, Nishimura Yoshihiro's sequel Meatball Machine Kodoku, Trent Haaga's 68 Kill, Adam Mason's Pig: The Final Screenings and more. The program will receive my primary attention during the festival in Austin next month, but as always, happy surprises will abound, I hope, in other programs that feature genre titles. Here are portions of the festival's official verbiage, edited for length:: "In this current political climate, genre filmmakers are more necessary than ever," said Jarod Neece, SXSW Senior Film Programmer. "They give us the chance...

UK filmmaker Adam Mason, of films like Broken, The Devil’s Chair and Pig, is known for grueling, brutal, often graphic visions. This year, he hits Austin’s annual SXSW, in the Midnighters section appropriately, with Hangman, a film that seems to marry said visions with Pov/found footage for what hopefully amounts to a scuzzy, unsettling affair. Starring Jeremy Sisto, Hangman…

Is it a zombie film? Is it a hallucination? Adam Mason's indie film Junkie is definitely an exercise in the surreal. Junkie blends genres, while offering several strange scenarios. Mason is known for his bloody work on Blood River (2009) and Pig (2010). His latest stars Robert Lasardo and Daniel Louis Rivas. These two actors play two brothers, who have a strange social circle. Full of hookers and drug dealers, Nicky (Lasardo) and Danny (Rivas) have different views on drug use and Danny wants to break free from this self-destructive lifestyle. But, Danny's brother wants him to spiral further down the rabbit hole. Junkie will release through video-on-demand and home entertainment formats November 12th, 2013. As well, the official artwork for the release is hosted here. Fans of the surreal can view the official trailer for Junkie below. Release Date: November 12th, 2013 (DVD, Video-on-demand). Director: Adam Mason. Cast: Daniel Louis Rivas, Robert Lasardo,...

Director Adam Mason’s dark comedy “Junkie” was recently acquired by the boys and girls at Indiecan Entertainment. With a little assistance from FilmBuff, the movie will soon be available on a variety of different platforms. This is definitely good news for those of you who love savagely humorous films about drug addiction. Although I didn’t love his 2007 flick “The Devil’s Chair,” I really thought Mason’s 2010 endeavor “Pig” was entertaining. Since the guy is hit and miss in my book, “Junkie” could go either way. At least it stars Robert Lasardo. That dude is a beast. Here’s the official synopsis if you’re curious about such things: Co-written by Mason and Simon Boyes, this twisted darkly comedic tale of out-of-control addiction stars Daniel Louis Rivas as a man trying to go clean, and Robert Lasardo as his psychotic brother, who will do anything to stand in his way.

Adam Mason has long been one of my favorite independent filmmakers. Mason made me take notice with his film Broken, that was released under the since-defunct Dimension Extreme line of home video releases, and then made me a lifer with what I would argue is his best film, The Devil’s Chair, which was released back in 2007 by Sphe(Sony). Adam also made an experimental film that has yet to see a proper release, titled Pig, in which the first three fourths of the film are captured in one continuous shot. Around the time that film was ready, Adam was hanging out in the discussion boards of various horror websites, offering anyone that wished to see his film Pig a means to do so. I met Adam around that time, and we started talking about his film, among other things, and he turned out to be one of the coolest...

Colin Firth is joining Reese Witherspoon in Atom Egoyan's drama based on the real-life case of the West Memphis Three, "Devil's Knot."
Deadline has the news, and reports that the story centers on Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr. who were convicted of the murder of three 8-year-old boys. The case was sensationalized with reports of devil worship and ritualized sacrifice, despite lack of physical evidence. Witherspoon will play a mother of one of the murdered boys, while Firth will take on the role of the heroic investigator who helped the Memphis Three when no one else would, uncovering important evidence for their defense.

If there's one thing that director Adam Mason (The Devil's Chair, Luster, Pig) is very, very, good at, it's exposing you to the darkest and most violent side of human nature to the point that no matter how hard you try, you just can't look away. If the latest stills from his new film Junkie are any indication of what's to come, it perfectly follows suit.
Believe it or not, even though this is the first time we are hearing about it (Mason is prolific and ultra-sneaky), the film has already wrapped principal photography and is now in post-production.

Director Tammi Sutton's Eye Candy - 2010 - Year of the Film Geek! I like the way she says that!
2010 was truly an incredible year for film geek! There were countless fantastic films this year, and a great many diverse films, something in every flavour, and something for everyone of all ages. I cannot remember a better year for such rich offerings for filmgoers. I feel privileged to have gotten to see so many great films, it started with late night whispers at Cannes, murderous feats to get to Telluride through Durango, to rushing an early, juvenile, cut of my own film "Isle of Dogs" at Fright Fest, and down to the wire fighting with a stranger's child in Los Angeles over the last DVD copy of 'Toy Story 3' hours ago.

It has been a long road for Adam Mason and Luster, his third collaboration with his The Devil's Chair and Blood River star Andrew Howard taking long enough to make its way to completion that the duo actually started and finished a fourth film together - the grueling single take horror picture Pig - while this one was in post production.

Adam Mason's single-take endurance test, Pig, has come under a fair amount of scrutiny over the past few months with opinion split to say the least. And while his next feature (Luster) lurks in post production it seems like a good time to revisit Mason's 2008 desert horror, Blood River, out on UK DVD from 19th July 2010.
The Hitcher-esque plot goes something like this:
"After a blown out tyre results in a near-fatal car crash in the middle of the Nevada desert, newlyweds Clark (Duncan) and his pregnant wife Summer (Panzer) are shocked to discover they have no spare in the trunk and so are forced to walk to the nearest town, Blood River, to find help.
