Sloppy Seconds - a ripoff
lor_27 May 2011
For this purported sequel, Joe D'Amato did not go back to Africa, but rather returned to the editing room. THE RETURN is the same footage as presented in the original, merely truncated with some narration by Jane added.

Running 73 minutes, it begins with the same credits sequence, listing the JUNGLE HEAT cast, even though many of them have been excised from the followup. Jane narrates 15 minutes of "highlights" footage recapping the action of the first film, and the remaining hour is merely exact scenes repeated, minus the ending of Part One.

IMDb incorrectly has a new cast member -Lulu David - in the role of the maid who elegantly services Tarzan with white gloves on, but in fact it is Barbara Dobici/Dobson, being the exact same footage from JUNGLE HEAT. Her beauty and erotic prowess briefly upstage Jane star Rosa Caracciolo, but Rosa still dominates the film with her loveliness and passion. Unfortunately, there is no point at all in watching it, given the existence of the far more complete JUNGLE HEAT.

The only value I got out of sitting through TARZHARD THE RETURN is seeing it with an Italian soundtrack, as opposed to JUNGLE HEAT only currently being available dubbed into Spanish. Rocco as Tarzan is made unnecessarily doltish in the Spanish version, with a basso voice and stupid grunting, whereas his Italian original performance is much better here.

The notion of reworking already released material to make a new film is not always bad -witness Jacques Rivette's very interesting variations on a theme in his films DIVERTIMENTO, OUT 1: SPECTRE and especially the short Paris S'EN VA, all derived from classics he made. But D'Amato and his pals at the once-prolific Butterfly Motion Pictures were just interested in defrauding the public.
