Plot Summary

U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is a modern day nineteenth century-style lawman, enforcing his brand of justice in a way that puts a target on his back with criminals, and places him at odds with his bosses in the Marshal service. That conflict results in a reassignment for Givens to the U.S. District covering the town where he grew up. He is an anachronism, a tough, soft-spoken gentleman who finds his quarry fascinating, but never gives an inch. Dig under his placid skin and you'll find an angry man who grew up hard in rural Kentucky, with an outlaw father, who knows a lot more about who he doesn't want to be than who he really is. Did You Know?

Edit
Trivia Walton Goggins, who was born in Alabama and grew up in Georgia, originally declined the role of Boyd Crowder, out of concern that the character would portray a negative stereotype of Southerners as racist rednecks. He changed his mind, and did the pilot as a favor to Timothy Olyphant, whom he knew through friends. It was supposed to be one episode only. Boyd originally died at the end of the pilot, as he did in the novel on which the show was based. However, when the character scored well with test audiences, it was decided to reshoot the ending to allow Boyd to survive and become a recurring character. See more »
Goofs It is clear from the surrounding countryside in more than a few episodes that while the series is set in SE Kentucky, it isn't filmed there. This includes scenes with treeless mountains in the background and semi-arid landscapes. See more »

Quotes [giving the prayer at Boyd's camp]
Raylan Givens: Dear Lord, before we eat this meal we ask forgiveness for our sins, especially Boyd- who blew up a black church with a rocket launcher, and afterwards he shot his associate Jared Hale in the back of the head out on Tate's Creek bridge. Let the image of Jared's brain matter on that windshield not dampen our appetites, but may the knowledge of Boyd's past sins help guide these men. May this food provide them with all the nourishment they need. But, if it does not, may they find comfort in knowing that the United States Marshal Service is offering fifty-thousand dollars to any individual providing information that will put Boyd back in prison. Cash or check, we can make it out to them. Or to Jesus. Whoever they want. In your name, we pray. Amen.
