Writer (2021) : Brief Review -

Visaranai, Nayattu, Naandhi and now Writer. The way South Industries have exposed the Police Department fearlessly is simply remarkable! There are hundreds of masala films made on police officers where you see the officer being honest, an icon and an inspirational figure to someone, followed by unimaginable action where he would beat a bunch of goons within 2-3 minutes. Well, I just want to ask, have you even witnessed such a fight in real life? How many iconic cops have you met in real life? There are hundreds of films that glorify cops, but there are only a few that expose the bad ones. I don't mean that all cops are the same, like good, but we all know that not all are the same as good either. There are many films that tell you why one should join the police force, but does any film tell you why you shouldn't join the police force? Visarnai (Tamil, 2015), Nayattu (Malayalam, 2021), Naandhi (Telugu, 2021) and now Writer (Tamil, 2021) are those films. These films dare to expose corrupt police officers and our Law & Justice system (mostly Naandhi does the latter). A writer at a police station gets trapped in an illegal custody case involving an innocent PHD student. With his guilt and regret looming large, can he save the young man? Writer starts on a slow note but picks up later, mostly after the interval. Then, in the last 30 minutes, it blows you away and literally delivers a stunning experience. In the lead, Samuthirakani gives a powerful performance. Dileepan, Ineya, and Kumaresan are equally good in the supporting roles. The screenplay drags in the first half, but there are no mistakes afterwards. Technically, Writer has one ending, but logically you get to see two endings-a negative one followed by a positive start. That's something. Franklin Jacob's storytelling is superb. His fearless and uncompromised vision makes this one a Must-Watch!

Director make clear and clean to say very content in this film, and also artist Mr. Samuthurakani sir no need to say how he was acting, in single word i want to say Perfection.

Then entire team support very well to give a good movie to people.

Writer , written and directed by debutant Franklin Jacob. The story revolves around two police men of Tamil Nadu police and a victim, and also deals with the politics and caste issues in the Police Department. It's a well scripted story with realistic moments and melodramatic flavours of a commercial cinema .

Heartbreaking movie

Story is very good. Must watch movie. Actors have done their role perfect. First part of the movie went little bit slow but the second half is very good, climax of the movie makes us cry. Thank you for such a good team work.

Another genuine effort to show unpleasant realities

If you liked the movie lookup a bit older Malayalam movie Thalappavu , which is based on real life story. This movie is not the same , but must have been influenced by the same original real life story of nexal Varghese and constable Ramachandran Nair.

After Jaibhim, nayattu and visaaranai this is another hard hitting film about cops brutality. While the story thread may feel less original if you have watched above movies , the making of it still worth it watching.

Good movie

This is my take on the "Writer" movie by Franklin Jacob. Usually, the possibility of watching back-to-back good movies is close to 0. But the past 5 films I had watched in theaters were either good, average, or best and it's good my money hasn't been wasted. Now coming to this movie, it's a neatly made one. Some scenes were hard-hitting and too emotional for me to handle. The story reveals itself in a slow manner in the second half of the movie. It's a movie about a "police writer" who was nearing his retirement where a particular duty made a turn of events around him. Loved every character in the movie, especially I loved the Xavier character what an act he showed on the screen is needed to be appreciated. Samuthirakani has avoided his usual messiah-type character and shows the grief and guilt when and wherever it's needed. Madras Johny was ok. Ineya's role was like a little bit of cameo but a well-written character. The film is filled with a lot of powerful dialogs (Unga aalungala ambailaya ye kuthirai la era vida maten pottachi ni thimiru eduthu eruviya ) and a Father's dialog "You are the first person to get an education from the low community, I can't say this will get into the higher community but you will definitely be in higher position" translating doesn't give the feel it had in Tamil ( Keela theru la irunthu muthal ala padika poirka da mela theruku vanthrviya nu enaku theriyathu da ana kandipa mela vanthrve). Govind Vasantha's music gives the proper feel throughout the movie.

Worth your time.

Another interesting movie about police brutality in India, not as hard to watch as Visaranai or Jai Bhim, though. There's a little bit of typical drama that you'll have to play along with but the ending was atypical and makes up for it. You might predict the what, but the how, not so much.

In recent days, a lot of Kollywood movies have started speaking against Police brutality and they have been a constant reminder of hard hitting truth. If Jai Bhim spoke about Police brutality towards the oppressed from Judicial point of view , Writer speaks it from the point of view of an about-to-be-retired policeman.

The plot is cliched - It speaks about an oppressed man who is framed by the policemen because he files a RTI that can unravel some very dark secrets of the police community.

I'm a bit skeptical about the initial 30 minutes because it tries to describe Samuthirakani's character but it was average at best. Once the plot kicks in, things start to get more interesting. There were several scenes that reminds you that this is made by a new filmmaker. The themes that Writer speaks is very good - the concept of police union and the power of RTI but as a whole this is a one time watchable movie.

Disturbing

A hard hitting , socio-political drama . Story was engaging and very well written . In tamil cinema there were some cop praising movies and also some movies based on cop brutality , but this movie shows how lower level cops are controlled by corrupted higher level cops . What happens if a cop trying to be righteous ? This movie spotlights the current reality . Performance wise all gave their best , especially Samuthirakani was awesome . Neelam production has a template , there contents are mostly against casteist , in this also they spoke against casteist in police. Technically movie has everything . Music and songs were good . There were one unnecessary song in first half . Felt like 3rd act was bit forced . Overall a disturbing movie . A must watch movie .

Very common story but interesting 😃

Very awesome go-to movie. A collection of tragic events in the life of an ordinary police chief constable .He does not know how his second wife behaved. There is no information about it. It's an anecdote about how an innocent college student gets caught in the clutches of a violent high-ranking police officer and dies. The end of the story is when the high-ranking officer is eventually shot and killed by this police clerk. The film goes without a hitch.

Victim is a Christian, Schedule Cast and has a Muslim friend.

SI and DC are shown to be from Upper cast and they are falsely framing the victim as a Naxal.

These days such movies are being made just to defame Communities especially Hindus!

Franklin Jacob has written and directed this anti Hindu movie.

Gripping story with attention to detail

The director and team has taken us inside the police station and captured every little bit of a Indian low level cops life.

The more movies I watch of Samuthurakani, the respect for him as an actor and ability to choose the right movies impresses me. His character reflects all the small emotions and fight goes inside good cops (however small that might be).

The pressure on cops to close cases and their as their matter of fact ways of forging cases is a reflection of Indian police stations.

Definitely worth watching.

How bad a police could be? Life gets spoiled!

Don't watch this based on caste because it was just a small part of the film watch it how a bad cop tried to do to coverup all his bad deeds and ended up spoiling the lives of many.

WOW...That's the best way to describe Writer. Franklin Jacob, you outdid yourself sir!

Delicious -Let's start with the incredible screenplay. When reading the synopsis, we thought this was going to be the common police brutality movie, but nope! Franklin Jacob went above and beyond focusing on police unions, social activism, fatherhood, and so on. Characters' introduction was gently executed, each scene sequence was understandable, and there was absolutely no way to determine the trajectory of Writer -The ending was phenomenal, realistic, and daring. Franklin didn't shy away from exposing the truth in wrongfully-accused cases. Dialogues pierced our hearts -We applaud the hair and make-up teams for transforming Samuthirakani (playing Thangaraj); we're so used to seeing him fresh and strong with his mustache that he appeared like a different person in Writer. Devakumar's special effects make-up worked very well!

-As always Samuthirakani's acting was spectacular, he was the soul of the movie; even the extras performed well! Special shout out to Xavier (Subramaniam Siva) and Raja (Anthony)

Bland -We expected a little bit more from the cinematography and editing based on Writer's intense plot; however, both areas were quite stale.

Pro-Caste movie

Pa Ranjith and Franklin Jacob both teamed up to produce pro caste-based movies. Pa Ranjith movies have been consistently pro caste and pro- Christian. In every movie he shows one side of the problems In society. Always non-christian and upper caste people are shown in a bad light. We have to discourage any caste-based movies In the future. The writer's movie starts well but eventually, it circles more around caste and left-wing ideology. The director fools the audience into buying his narration that good human beings are mostly crypto Christians.

It has flaws but the core theme should be appreciable

It has perfect start and forced ending...The movie was raw in most of the places and looks so artificial in some cases... Too much of flashback explanations spoiled the story flow. Lot of characters and lot of deviations. The climax looked like forced one to make this movie as more darker one.

Lot of things made in more detail and explained very well. It should be really appreciable for the core theme and the execution.

This movie based on very interesting story of the police and shows us many facts about the tamilnadu police department. The main character done by the samuthrakanni actor was well good. The moral of the story is to make an union for the pc to solve their problems through the union.

The Kerala story movie was heart touching. The characters they portrayed extremely well. We should not fall to such traps. Our parents have instilled good characters we should understand. We should believe in our god whom we are trusting since childhood. We should realise when such people are brainwashing and we should share with our parents and friends and seek advice from them. Else God also cannot help you. Death you are inviting at your door step. I would say every indian should watch this movie and encourage the directors who are taking efforts to guide india in proper direction. Educating the young indians in all possible ways. Thank you.

a wonderful movie that deserves to be watched

It is a wonderful movie that deserves to be watched, as it presents the struggle of good and evil in police departments, as the film confirms that the police community contains people who are benevolent, unlike the other films that describe policemen as bad men without exceptions. The plot is excellent and unique and the actors excelled in their role. The only flaw in the movie is the long introduction at the beginning of the movie, and the direction is very great.

Propaganda movie marketed as Thriller!!

This team earlier has made similar movies and this is nothing different. The story is completely misleading , it has no importance as the stress was only on political agenda.

These kind of movies and narration is nothing but injecting poison in young minds,can have negative impact on the society.

Usual caste movie by pa.Ranjith team

Movie was nice in the beginning. Then it get abit confusing. As usual, pa Ranjith team portrayed Hindu as the bad guy and caste crazy. The victim is the Christian, backwards caste. In the movie. Police DC is so consent about a OBC caste women on not allowing her to join police horse department. It's so funny how the related all into caste . People like Ra Ranjith says thrs no caste but he is the one who brings up caste everywhr.

Another Visaranai, Jai Bhim kind of film. But not made very well. Too much characters. Many scenes are not needed for the plot at all. And some scenes are not made in convincing way.
