Episode 1
bobcobb30128 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This felt really long, and yet I was entertained throughout. I did not care how long it was because they told a simple, yet good story here.

A corrupt casino official and his right hand man. Very common, very familiar villain, but the hero of the story was slightly different. A former poker player who can read people's faces. Interesting enough.

Natasha Lyonne may have been even better on this show than she was on the underrated Netflix series Russian Doll.

I am not sure if this is better as a series than it would have been as a movie, but I am hooked and intrigued and I cannot wait to see where it goes from here.

Great first episode!

Warning: Spoilers
I was randomly googling the possibility of any sort of Columbo reboot or remake in the works when I came across articles about this new series. The articles basically said this is a worthy remake of Columbo in every way except name. Of course, it's more different than that, beginning with a female lead, but that statement piqued my interest, to say the least. Columbo was in his heyday when I was in junior high and high school. After watching this first episode, I agree. This show has a protagonist with the ability to tell when someone is lying. Columbo had a knack for that too. He was also always "figuring" just like Charlie Cale. I enjoyed this episode a lot, but I hated to see Adrien Brody go out the window. His distress was so clearly visible on his face. He couldn't face Daddy's rebuke and disdain although he'd earned it. Benjamin Bratt was fun to watch as well. Natasha Lyonne is new to me, but I really liked her. I may have to check out some of her other work. I kind of wish the writers had kept Brody and Bratt around for an entire season. I would have loved to see Sterling interact with his father. Highly recommend this series! Looking forward to more episodes.

Fun filled whodunnit
angelathomas-7263127 January 2023
Rian Johnson has done it again! The show starts with the murder then begins again with Charlie, played by Natasha Lyonne and her connection to the victim. The victim in this episode is Charlie's friend and we learn that Charlie has a special gift - she can spot a lie. This has gotten Charlie into some trouble in her past as she used it to win easy money playing poker. Then she was busted by a casino owner but he gave her a job as a cocktail waitress. Then he turned the casino over to his son, played by Adrien Brody who wants to exploit her talent in a private poker game but Charlie just can't stop thinking about the death of her friend and things are not adding up. So Charlie starts asking questions and people would prefer she mind her own business but she just can't stop. This show is going to be a great! I understand the reference to Columbo, but Natasha is way less annoying lol. Peacock has a gem on it's hands and the cast are phenomenal!

You had me at the Columbo font
babyned28 May 2023
It's not often I get excited about a new tv show these days, but when I stumbled across Rian Johnson's new offering, I could tell something special was in store when the opening credits used the Columbo font.

As the story unfolded it became clear how deliberate that was, when Charlie's gravelly voice delivered lines very reminiscent of Peter Falk's legendary detective.

This is a cool, fresh take on the old 70s TV detective format. It felt very modern, and even though it adopted the Columbo pattern of showing the murder in all it's detail at the beginning, there were still plenty of surprises and twists in store.

There were plenty of little clues that viewers paying attention could detect ahead of the reveals, and there were plenty of movie and tv references, most notably the huge stuffed birds of prey behind the psychotic killer referencing Anthony Perkins in psycho

There are also great guest star appearances in each episode, and wonderful cinematography throughout. A strong series that I hope will continue!

"Yeah, I, so... you, you tell the cops what to do and they just do it? How does that work?"

Warning: Spoilers
This was a great kick off to a new series on the Peacock network. It's not your typical murder mystery because you see a henchman kill two people on the order of his boss, and then the story flashes back to reconstruct events leading up to those crimes with the series protagonist using her special ability to ferret out what really happened. Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) is the series hero with a unique talent of being able to tell when anyone's lying. She usually does this by calling 'bull...t', even in the most mundane circumstances. Lyonne's character doesn't fit the bill as a typical leading lady, she's got a gravelly voice, isn't classically beautiful, and for sure is no fashion plate. Just get a load of her outfits here, like when she goes to the convenience store after just waking up and plopping on an old rag coat - hilarious! In this first episode she solves her friend's murder by taking the extra steps necessary to break down the chronology of events leading to a surprising climax with the suicide of her employer, Frost Casino manager Sterling Frost, Jr. (Adrien Brody). My only reservation with the story is how she puts herself in harm's way by explaining to Frost and his right-hand man Cliff Legrand (Benjamin Bratt) how she figured out how they pulled off the murders of her friend Natalie (Dascha Polanco) and her husband Jerry (Michael Reagan). At any moment they could have just jumped her to put an end to an unassuming detective career. The story borrows a plot element I saw for the very first time in one of my favorite movies, "To Kill a Mockingbird", in which a crime is disproven by demonstrating a character's left hand versus right hand bias, something that Frost and Cliff didn't know when the murders were carried out.

Full disclosure here: Most of the casino scenes in 'Dead Man's Hand' were filmed on May 3, 2022 on the site of the former Anthony's Pier 9 Restaurant in New Windsor, New York. I know, because I was there. If you don't blink, you will be able to catch my very first screen appearance at the 44:27 mark of this episode, it lasts for all of two seconds. It occurs when Natasha Lyonne walks past a craps table and I turn front as she goes by. I never even realized it at the time!

A good character study and plotline that's not so obvious
spicygrits4 May 2023
I like a good character study. I give a show/movie 20 minutes to hold my attention. Charlie has me intrigued. I dig Adrien Brody's character as the foil. So far so good on the first episode. I plan on watching another episode so well done. I hope this isn't a series where the first season is well written but subsequent series suck because they change the writers. We shall see!

Natasha Lyonne's gravely voice-I dig it! So NOT mainstream. Well done casting director!!! I look forward to seeing other cast members story lines: Chloe Sevigny, Simon Helberg, John Ratzenberger, Benjamin Bratt, Ron P Perlman...comeon dude I see some great character actors and look forward to the journey.

Thought I'd take a chance...
caronabhern30 March 2023
And was pleasantly surprised at how this episode held my attention both with the characters, the actors who played them and the story! Also, I had to rewind a few times because the location looked so familiar. Recognized so much of the area, as we stop over in Laughlin and Bullhead City every winter on our way towards Yuma, AZ. Love Natasha's quirkiness, both comedic and semi-serious. Always liked Benjamin Bratt and Adrian Brody. Scrolled through the cast list and there are alot of well known actors to be featured in coming episodes. So glad I took a chance on this show, hope the coming episodes don't disappoint!

A Solid 8
clkmellang21 February 2023
So far: a solid 8. I loved the premise of this new show on Peacock. A female lead unwittingly solving murders in each episode. Natasha Lyonne is fantastic in Poker Face. The role was made for her. I also love the surprising ways Poker Face features a lot of great actors in different ways-like Judith Light, S. Epatha Merkinsen, Ellen Barkin, Tim Meadows and Chloe Sevigny and Benjamin Bratt. The only complaint I have is the uneven storylines. Episode 1 was good, Ep 2 and 7 were great. 3 and 6 so so. Episode 4 was awful. There are 3 episodes left. I'm on board no matter what and it looks like there will be a Season 2. Much to like in Poker Face-especially Natasha as Charlie.

Dead Man's Hand
lassegalsgaard26 January 2023
After the immense success of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," it seems like Rian Johnson has found some love in the smaller films. He has found a lot of success in the mystery genre, having now received Academy Award nominations for his scripts for 2019s "Knives Out" and its 2022 sequel. It was announced that he was working on a show with Peacock that would star Natasha Lyonne, and I couldn't have been more excited to see what would actually come of this insane team-up. And if the first episode is a sign, this is going to be a must watch show every coming week.

Having already crafted a new iconic detective for the big screen, it feels almost safe to bet that he was going to do that here as well. However, with Charlie Cale, he instead crafts a character that has a unique ability to tell when people are lying, but who isn't necessarily the born detective. Johnson's writing is incredibly complimentary towards Cale's gifts, but also highlights her shortcomings and shows that she's not a born detective as she embarks on a journey to find out what happened to her friend. At first, you'd be forgiven if you would think that the mystery would be her finding out the true nature of the crime, but actually, the mystery is something that is even being kept from the audience so far, which is very exciting and gives them a good reason to tune in every week. It's not a classic murder mystery in that way, but it's certainly good at paying homage to many of the old detective films and shows from the past, of which Johnson has clearly been influenced. But like a lot of those projects, Johnson is focused on crafting an interesting character study, blended in with the mystery aspects. And Charlie is a fascinating individual who has a lot of skills, but also a very complicated background that will hopefully be revealed as the show progresses. Also, Natasha Lyonne can do anything she puts her heart to, and she absolutely nails this part and makes the premiere of this show exceptional and leaves us wanting more.

"Dead Man's Hand" is not a classic whodunnit like you'd expect from Rian Johnson, but it's even more fascinating because of what it reveals and doesn't. The main character is a fascinating protagonist and Natasha Lyonne does a brilliant job of bringing her to the screen, and with Johnson's writing, this is a true dream team.

Dead Man's Hand
Prismark1029 May 2023
The title fonts make it clear that this show is a homage to Columbo. By the end Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) is on the run, just like the Fugitive.

The series is created by Rian Johnson who did the Knives Out movies.

Natalie is a casino hotel maid who sees something on the laptop of a high roller. She reports it to her casino bosses and is killed for her troubles.

Her friend Charlie is not satisfied with the answers. Charlie has an ability to know when someone is lying, her boss Sterling Frost Jr (Adrien Brody) is hiding something regarding Natalie's death.

There was a slight confusion that after Natalie's death it goes to a flashback until the story catches up. Hence why that clip of John Travolta from Pulp Fiction is an important clue.

As the first episode was a set up, it was a bit uncertain. You have Charlie solving the crime and getting her revenge on Frost Jr. It then leaves her at the mercy of his father who is a man not to be messed with.

Warning: Spoilers
Have you ever felt wow what an start to the series, first episode with a complete story ... Like a movie.. the story can stop now at the climax of episode 1..can be aired in cinema... Happened to me in this series. Starts with a murder , gets solved in this episode.

The story now i think is going towards the "Runaway series" after the "whodunnit". There are plenty of lovely moments created in this episode. No loose ends tightly knit episode where every characters have some role to play. I will give you example of two people The friend of "Natalie" knows the locker code which has been used only to know the code of her phone. I guess that character is created for that sole purose. And the neighbour of charlie in their first conversation she asks about "whether he started to steal again" just to establish the character is good at stealing .. is a thief and that is used later in the episode to break into the "Natalies" home.

It has already established the "Charlies superpower" and also the antagonist "the cold blooded father"so will be fun to watch how will she tackle with that.

The human lie detector
AvionPrince168 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So the episode start pretty well and make us really curious about why this women get killed and what did she find on the laptop? We will follow also Charlie a human lie detector that will investigate the death of her friend; she will also help the guy who is in charge of the casino to cheat and steal money from a rich guy. But Charlie show us how smart she is and will directly suspect that her friend was killed by the guy who make run the casino and his bodyguard. And she will even tricked the guy by warned the rich guy that they are going to cheat on him; bad reputation for the casino and the character; so he killed himself. But Charlie is still wanted by the father who will seek vengeance for his son

Im pretty curious to see what will happen next and what they will talk about; i mean the whodunnit is pretty over; Charlie know that was the guy who directed the casino and find the real reason why her friend get killed but we still dont know what she really find on the laptop and what will Charlie discover in the next episodes; the episode was really interesting: in term of writing; characters and stories. Charlie is really a person who we get really attached with her from the beginning; love also the way she talks and how her character can create some unpredictable moments with her gift. Very nice episode and like i said im really curious for the next episodes. Sound good for now.

"There's a voice that keeps on calling me....."
matrixuk-5128328 May 2023
What we have here is essentially a remake of the littlest hobo, but instead of London the dog we have Natasha Lyon.

The cast of actors is good, but this is simply to detract from the obvious short comings of the show.

The plots are obvious.

Like pretty much everything from Rian Johnson the plots are unoriginal, taken from successful movies or TV shows and rehashed, badly.

I'm at a loss at how the man continues to gain employment!

It shows what a sorry state the "business" is in.

Run by the talentless that think anything earlier than 2000 is ancient and anything is black and white is simply not to be watched.

So here we have another show, ripping off a classic from yesteryear, being passed off as an original.

It's not Rian!

We all see through you.

Natasha and Her Vocals
geopictures20 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
When I heard Natasha Lyonne was going to play the main star, I just forgotten how her voice isn't like her teenage years or when she played in the movie "But I'm a Cheerleader" Another thing is that I heard that Clea Duvall will be playing a role in this which is heartening. This first episode shocked me especially with its mood and entertainment. To this day, my favorite scene of this show is when Natasha is running through the hallway getting shot at. This is a shocking episode and I feel like this was perfect for a first episode. Natasha Lyonne being in this shocks me since I don't see her in a lit of these films.

The queen of the deck
Horst_In_Translation23 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
"Dead Man's Hand" is the very first episode from the pretty new American series "Poker Face" and it aired in January 2023, so it is pretty much to the day almost exactly one year old. This means that you can easily get into the series without having too much to catch up on. Most of the awards attention for it so far went to lead actress Natasha Lyonne, who is surely among the dominating forces on the small screen now and will be interesting to see at what point she is going to move on to the big screen maybe. She looked like a rougher Shakira you could say, but her hair contributes a lot to that obviously. Still can't look any better really in your mid-40s. Aside from that and her performance, the episode is also worth seeing for numerous other reasons. The director and one of three writers here was Rian Johnson and he already managed a highly successful transition to the big screen, so this shows you again the extremely high level (American) television is on right now that they got him to launch things and of course it also helped with getting a name like Oscar winner Adrien Brody on board. Benjamin Bratt is always easy to identify too and he is ten years older than Brody now, so around the age of 60. Brody was just so young when he won the Oscar. Anyway, at the end of the episode or briefly before that you realize that he is only in it for one episode. A bit of a pity we won't see his character again in the next episodes, but at least there will be a second season. And other pretty well-known performers will take over.

If we look at the plot, this is all about the crime and how it gets solved. Right at the very beginning we know who got killed and who pulled the trigger on them. We also know that the victim saw something she should not have seen, but do not find out right away what it was exactly. However, the very first scene then that included Lyonne in the car explained that pretty much as well, even if it was not chronological. So this is no whodunnit, but rather a fascinating watch as we see the protagonist get closer to the truth. Still, I was a bit surprised and maybe it was a bit exaggerated too that she solved the entire mystery so quickly. This also could have gone on for the entire first season or so. However, the solution then when she confronts the two killers was good enough to let them get away with it. The moment Brody's character jumps out of the window was perhaps the most breathtaking from the entire episode. The two murders early on performed by Bratt's character were not far behind though. The role of the police here was interesting too, how Brody's character might have them all in his pocket. You could wonder at the end of course if the police are in the other room and come to the protagonist's rescue, but turns out the episode took a totally different route, but one just as effective. And maybe it even made sense this way because while the police officer in charge tells Lyonne's character that whatever she finds she can bring him and he will take a look into it, he still called Brody's character immediately afterwards.

Then there is still the component that she is basically a human lie detector. They will definitely dig deeper into that during the next episodes. Seeing her in action this way was interesting too, even if most viewers probably expected that we would also see her pull through with the plan she made with Brody's character to get all the money from the rich guy. This was a very unexpected twist there that he was long gone. Big respect from me to you if you saw it coming. I know I didn't. What was not unexpected was her friend in a way digging her own grave and that Brody's and Bratt's characters would deal with her because of what she saw and not call the FBI. Here and there it is also an episode that will put a smile on your lips. No super serious stuff. Just take the surprise inclusion of Oprah there that had me stunned with my mouth wide open. And even the way Brody's character had some really dark humor to it because this was exactly how he planned for Lyonne's character to die. At the very end, in what is almost an epilogue, we hear Brody's character's father on the phone with the protagonist and this connection and their shared past is surely something that the series will elaborate on in the next episodes. She will be on the run from him. We also only hear his voice, so we do not know at this point which actor will portray him.

All in all, this was an episode very much worth watching. It's hard to find any flaws and each major character had some strong showings or at least entertaining ones like take Bratt's character's over-the-top laughing towards the end when he realizes how much Brody's character messed up. Daddy's call the exact same moment was another highlight. You can say that the beginning was spectacular and so was the ending then. In-between, I guess they could have cut maybe ten minutes from these pretty long 64.5 minutes almost, but it also did not drag too much and I guess if they had, then maybe Lyonne's character solving all of it so quickly would have felt even less realistic. So it is all good. I will definitely keep watching and I hope the really high level here continues. We will see about that. In general, I am a fan of chronological narration, but here I felt it was also done pretty nicely how they handled it with the way the show began and how we get to the point where Brody's character is informed about what the chambermaid saw later on again when we already know he had her killed. We just didn't know early on that Lyonne's character was in the other room there. I guess you get it by now. I enjoyed the watch here a lot and highly recommend seeing this pilot episode. One of 2023's finest and what a way to start a year and a series. Highly recommended. "Burn Notice" fans will also like one little mention here by the way.

Expecting stand alone...
songod-9500321 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Expected stand alone eps but it seems we'll be dealing with an arc.

The casino boss' dad is out for revenge on Charlie (played wonderfully by Natasha). He blames her for his son's death (when it all was really his own fault) and has promised to hunt her down.

While it seems each ep (I just am catching up and saw ep one) will have its own self contained story, the hunt and hunted thing will be going on and on. I have seen this kind of thing before; many times before. So many I am bored with the trope.

I am counting on Natasha and crew to make this interesting and not bog down with her having to constantly dodge Big Bad Dad and narrowly miss getting killed every ep.

Of course in the finale he'll be somehow done away with!

Sets up the series, but makes no sense if you think about it for 2 seconds
ross_tm12 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
All sorts of things wrong with the episode. Why kill Natalie? Better to stall her until after the con, then turn the mark in; that way he'll be too busy with his defense to come after you. Even maybe bring Natalie in on the con, telling her it is further punishment for the mark. Charlie gets revenge for Natalie by tipping off the mark, who she knows to be a really bad guy, would she do that? Frost Jr. Is afraid of his father's scorn, but what could the old man do to you that is worse than killing yourself? If the old man is so unforgiving, why does Frost's assistant, who was active in the con, remain working for him?

Other than that, the pace is good, Natasha Lyonne is super likable as the main character, and the car is great. (I learned to drive in one, though my mom's Barricuda was olive green and the racing stripe was black.) I assume the sloppiness was an unavoidable consequence of setting up the rest of the series. I hope future episodes make more sense.

I am a big fan of Natasha Lyonne since she was a teenager. This caught my attention as I'm watching the promo on Peacock. I'm watching the promo I see a stream of heavy hitters to mid level stars that I enjoy. Adrien Brody, Benjamin Bratt and Ellen Barkin to name 3. I read the premise. I got myself comfortable and was treated to the longest hour of television. I had this nightmare it was going to 11 episodes to this mystery. Why waste the talents of Adrian Brody. The finale to this episode almost made up for the boredom. As a fan of Natasha, I will stick it through. You can see the potential in the show. I would give a lower rating. Adrian and Benjamin are intriguing. Pick up the pace.😄
