The Woe Must Woe On...
Xstal25 November 2022
A trip to the morgue to observe the cadavers, the bodies of those who've been turned into rashers, by monstrous claws, and by monstrous jaws, with conjecture on who's morphing into the slasher. There's a high school dance that's a bit of a bash, as the outcasts assemble for a dance and a thrash, Wednesday has all the moves, gets herself in the groove, added crimson red scarlet makes a right monster mash (Carriesque in fact, but nowhere near as vengeful). But a vision results in an exit unseen, as the monster approaches defenceless Eugene, a run to the woods, before all of his bloods, disappeared and he's just a has been.

Steady, we can't be losing steam now. A fantastic episode with a bit more of cheese than expected. Doesn't really takeaway from the great narrative though.

Warning: Spoilers
Their Spanish heritage and musical influences as one of the choice of music that Wednesday listens to is brilliant and suiting. Everything from visual, costume, music and prop designs for this show is amazingly unique and screams of Tim Burton meets The Addams. Can't get enough of it. The unique flair of this show is intoxicating.

Wednesday acting as a corpse, over-the-top acting that still remains as engaging as it is amusing, the proper and subtle uses of current social media practices amongst teens like pinterest, instagram and others; for a franchise that is as old as The Addams, it has become part of its iconography the uses of certain romanticized macabre things like old phones, old gramophones, typewriters, crystal balls instead of iphones, and such. So when bringing them to the modern age, it could be a daunting task to have them interact with so many replacements that have appeared without them having to lose that identity "stuck in the past" aspect of them. So I really commend this show for blending both in such a natural and fitting way. Wish other modernisations of old franchises could succeed as such.

And the High School stuff arrives. Love the writing in everything related to Wednesday about this dance she must go to to find out more about the mystery. It's still teen drama, but it's made more engaging than ever with this crowd and especially knowing Wednesday's aversion to it. With your classic "asking a boy out to a dance" and a make-over scene, we are hitting every beat and theme of this mixture of genres in the show. Although with some inconsistent character behavior on part of Wednesday and most notably the two guys we saw a relationship being establish with, overall the dancing scene is great and helps develop the "love triangle". And a great Carrie-inspired finale and a reaction on Wednesday's part absolutely gold. But yeah, the boy drama was a bit tacked on and rushed, I hope the show doesn't pull from that overly-dramatized take on teenage angst and love.

First sign of wavering, yet not too bad. The show has a lot going on for it and I for one am super excited to see how it goes. "If you hear me scream Bloody Murder, there's a good chance I am enjoying myself", can't get enough with the great writing of the show.

love triangles are boring
sadbbygoth26 November 2022
The dance was amazing and wonderfully choreographed/filmed. The drama between Xavier and Tyler over Wednesday however, felt forced and was unnecessary; their feelings seemingly came out of no where. Why were they so upset when Wednesday never showed any genuine interest in the first place? Even Jenna hated the idea of a love triangle for her character, and on top of that it was handled so poorly- both boys were pushy, insistent, and overly emotional which kind of ruined a majority of scenes they were in. While i can understand a love interest can be used to forward the plot, Wednesday never showed much care to their feelings.. She had more worry and guilt over hurting Enid than she ever did for "leading" the boys on.

Dance scene
skamp-3997225 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Hats off to the choreographer for that dance scene that easily steals this episode. Also the way Jenna Ortega uses her body and more specifically her eyes to stay in character whilst dancing is truly tremendous and a credit to her acting abilities that are clear to see. The music is perfect and the scene really reflects the gothic feel of the whole series. Classic Tim Burton scene and definitely worth watching more than once I would say.

Also enjoyed the homage to the 'Carrie' prom scene which although kind of obvious in its set up was still fun to see how Wednesday reacted to the panic surrounding her.

OMG, the dance scene
funnycommentor4 December 2022
The plot of the 4th episode was really interesting and really mysterious and that's the reason why I LOVED that episode. The storyline was very well written and everything was well-explained. Gladly, it was a really intense episode and I literally loved each scene of that episode. The highlight of that episode was definitely, Wednesday's ICONIC dance scene! It was awesome, Jenna totally deserves an award about her dancing and acting skills. Of course, there were too many other incredible scenes on that episode (for example, the whole prom night scene). The ending scene was kinda expected, but it was super intense and I'm really super anxious about episode 5.. Last but not least, episode 5 was the best episode of the TV show, so far.

Enjoyable episode with standout moments
snoozejonc9 January 2023
Wednesday continues her investigations and goes to the Rave'N dance.

This is another solid episode with great visuals and a strong central performance.

The mystery plot moves only slightly in this episode with a few bits of information revealed that makes you curious about various characters and ends on another moment where you want to see what happens next.

A fair bit of screen time is dedicated to character moments, particularly the romances and potential romances of various individuals. I think you have to like them or at least take an interest in these dynamics to fully appreciate these scenes. As beautiful as some sequences are to look at and as excellent as actors such as Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers play the parts, I don't think the writers have done enough to make everything work. Personally, I think screen couplings work best when the characters have gone through something meaningful together beforehand and so far in the story it's not the case. It feels to me like they are attracted to each other just because the writers say the are. (Though, I might just have forgotten what it was like to be a teenager)

This episode has some of the best cinematography, lighting, art design and choreography in the show so far.

For me it's a 7.5/10, but I round upwards.

Love triangle, artificial and pointless.
Escapist-280228 November 2022
Even if it's still a drama about teenagers, the fact that the viewer is aware of Wednesday's hatred for the subgenre makes it a lot more fascinating. We've got the standard "asking a man out to a dance" moment as well as a scenario in which she gets a makeover, which means that we've covered all the bases for this mashup of genres. The character appeared to be rather constant, with the exception of some unpredictable behaviour that occurred on Wednesday.

The shooting of the dance as well as the choreography were both done quite well. The music is effective in contributing to the melancholy mood that has been created here. Because the scene is so characteristically associated with Tim Burton, I feel that everyone should see it more than once. On the other hand, it looked as though the two of them had suddenly acquired a love for one another, which gave the love triangle an artificial and pointless quality. Why were Wednesday so agitated now when it seemed that they had never shown any interest in the subject to begin with? I can understand how a romantic interest may be beneficial to the plot, but Wednesday never gave any indication that she cared about them beyond their function as a plot element. To her, "leading" the men on was never as much of a worry as her humiliation and her dread of hurting Enid. She was more concerned about Enid.

I love the Dance scene
moviesfilmsreviewsinc6 December 2022
Episode 4 of Wednesday starts with her sneaking into the County coroner's office with the help of Thing. She wants to learn more about the victims of the monster and examine the body of the latest victim. Her sleuthing is interrupted by the return of the coroner and the sheriff.

She hides in one of the mortuary cabinets and overhears their conversation. The killer is keeping trophies from his victims. The sheriff asks the coroner to keep this a secret and he gladly agrees. He is more excited that this is his last case before retiring. The next morning, Wednesday shares her findings with Edin who faints at the site of the grotesque crime scene photos. Later in class, Wednesday finds Xavier's neck wounds a little suspicious but he tells her that he tweaked his neck while fencing. Wednesday doesn't believe him and spies on him. She discovers his secret painting room on the school grounds and breaks in. Once she is in, she finds drawings of the monster, she takes one of the drawings and leaves. Xavier spots her before she leaves and asks what she is doing there. She asks him the same question and he tells her that it is his private art studio but refuses to give her a tour. She has no valid excuse for being there so she decides to ask him to the upcoming Rave N dance. Xavier is happy to be asked and thinks she is into him. It is a bit sad to see Xavier and Tyler try to get into Wednesday's good graces when she is more preoccupied with finding the monster. She is not going to be able to understand their feelings or even reciprocate them. Eugene should have just listened to Wednesday, it was a terrible idea to go alone into the woods. Ajax and Enid make a cute couple though, and it is adorable that in the midst of all the killings and mysteries they can find love. Edin is also happy that Wednesday has changed her mind and wants to bond over dress shopping. Wednesday however has other ideas and doesn't think dress shopping is their thing. While in town she visits the sheriff and tries to convince him they should walk together. The sheriff is hesitant at first but between the Mayor's constant calls for an update and Wednesday's persuasion, he agrees. He asks her to bring him some evidence and maybe they might work together to zone in on a suspect. Edin left to her own devices runs into Lucas Walker, the mayor's son and one of the three troublemakers. He asks Edin to take him to the dance in her school and lies he wants to make an ex jealous. Edin thinks this is a great idea as she is still under the impression that Ajax ghosted her and wants to make him jealous too. At the dance, Xavier is grumpy to see Tyler and Wednesday together and he asks Bianca to use her siren powers to help him get over Wednesday. Bianca is rightfully annoyed by this request and leaves. Tyler and Wednesday have a great time and she learns that Xavier was once bullied by Tyler but that doesn't faze her. On the other hand, Lucas starts to realize that he has a lot in common with Enid. However, he is at the party to ruin it and he and his friends spray red paint on the students at the end of the party. Enid is disappointed when she finds out that he only used her but the situation gives her an opportunity to clear up the misunderstanding with Ajax. They kiss and makeup.

Fun and intense
lorenarufino114 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The mischief-at-the-morgue was so on brand, as an opening scene it's up there with the pilot.

On this episode, everything happens more or less at once - we get a dance, romance, highschool drama, a glimpse at the blood thirsty monster - except any actual schooling, perish the thought.

Among the many positives, we avoided the traditional makeover cliché (since he handled everything herself in, like, 5 minutes and without fanfare) and, though Wednesday and Tyler prove they have chemistry, I'm glad she stood her ground and stayed true to her innate weirdness.

Hopefully, their conversation at the Rav'N is an indication of what we can expect of their relationship down the road. The series hit the jackpot with the main pair, as the two teens are complex characters, from different backgrounds but much in common, particularly the fact that, each in their own right, they're both somewhat unhinged misfits with mommy issues.

Xavier, however, is at his most insufferable, not much to say about that. Again, could do without any love triangles.

And, lastly, while Enid provides timely lightheartedness, Eugene proves he's also a worthy sidekick - loyal, overexcitable, eager to chase trouble.

Cliche
pariisaap19 December 2022
What the hell. Wednesday is a freak and . From the beginning they want to prove she doesn't like to be a normal girl and she is not interested in stupid things that a normal teenage girl usually likes

But it seems every hero in this kind of stories should have a partner. So immediately they find a few boyfriends for her to follow the cliche of teen dramas.

Suddenly a girl that always kid her friends for buying clothes or talking about boys go to a party with boys and showed up as a dance star.

That is really disappointing. At least let it happen after a while that she get familiar to those boys.

The dancing scene was marvelous
raxant23 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The dancing scene was marvelous. It splashed a very unexpected revelation of Wednesday not being a very stagnant character, but a rather well-moving one. In a way some of her moves remind us of her reoccurring visions, making the viewer waiting for one every beat. The unhinged dance, the "I don't care what others think about me" dance. Even though many characters seem to be into her, she never seemed too interested of a character, acting cold A*, but this performance, it was different, and had some hidden eroticism in it, too. As if she's carefully observing her dance partner, absorbing all the information that's presented to her (knowing her harsh sight). It's a wonderful scene that made me rate this episode especially high. It might have been some of my favorite moments of the entire season.

Good show, lousy situations.
garabedian1239 December 2022
What i mean by that is..the Gorgon guy turns himself to stone..And What happens after that? He ignores the girl he was supposed to go make out with...even brings another date to the dance, whom he completely ignores later. We dont even see what happens there.

All so we can have a little buildup of nothing?

Why will they not show a werewolf? All the talk about turning into one and no one ever does it. Again..how do i know the monster is not a werewolf if I have never seen a werewolf? Why is the show being so difficult about this.

Why must there be a short haired black girl in every show these days? Ive never ever seen a black woman go out in public like that.

woe what a shame
whitey_nighty23 May 2023
They could have made a show worth watching that would be refreshing an interesting, they came close but had to add in some political things here and there that are quite trendy in Hollywood nowadays, however your review will not be published here if you dare to speak the inconvenient truth. I tried and had my review not published, my older reviews taken down, and my user name changed without my approval... retaliation. Well back to this series , no expense was spared during the filming and the storyline is good too it's just little things thrown by writers that typical Hollywood types obviously like minded with those that run this site. Too bad for folks that watched the Addams family when they grew up because you won't find many similarities to this series at all so you will be most certainly disappointed if you were expecting more Addams family antics.

Settling for Mediocrity
machina2213 December 2022
I have a theory that the writers wanted to create a generic teen drama show, but got landed with a Wednesday Addams series, so just inserted her in place of their original protagonist. That's really the only way I could explain someone thinking involving Wednesday Addams in a teen love triangle storyline would be a great idea, or half a dozen other naff plot lines that Wednesday's dragged into.

Even Wednesday's surly, sarcastic disposition, and Ortega's great characterisation isn't saving this show from mediocrity. The uniqueness of the character is being drowned out by all this... bland normality. That's about the worst thing that can happen to an Addams Family show.

And of course we still haven't gone an episode without the writers inserting their political baggage into the dialogue. This episode we got 'climate crisis', 'female objectification', and 'you can't say that, *it's offensive*' - how they spoil us!

Three points for Ortega's performance, the dance choreography, and Thing. Everything else is far too normie.

Why can't shows like this or the recent Foundation series be developed by people who love the source material and will treat them with the respect they deserve?

I suppose if everyone complains but then gives it a 9/10 we're getting what we deserve.

Who is this for?
tyggfqxcm8 December 2022
This is the rich kid high school dance episode. Really driving home the have-nots the Outcasts are. Drama abound with pointless webbing caught up in the corners of "if they would just have one conversation this plot would be resolved." I don't care about the relationships of any of these characters and I have a hard time believing the protagonist does either. At least Wednesday being caught off guard and not being clever enough to figure a way out of it addresses the elephant in the room: This is not Wednesday Addams, and I'm not sure who this show is for. The middle school edgy kid dialogue is becoming grating, did one of the not-like-other-girls outcast actually say a "I grew up with brothers" line, and sprinklers don't work that way.

Hypnotizin' mesmerizing me, she was everything I dreamed she'd be.
bombersflyup27 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Woe What a Night has "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" vibes running all through it, though not on that level.

Jenna does a dance in her specially bought dress, with two guys vying for her affection, surprise none forthcoming. There's a mention of the Scoobies, a visit to the morgue and well Enid has a bit of Willow about her. Thing, no looking! And don't you tell a soul! Eugene feeling rejected, goes off alone to his certain death in defiance. It's funny though, of all the things to happen this episode, I find Wednesday sitting down to talk peacefully with Bianca the biggest outlier amongst it all.
