As the federal court case between the FBI and Apple rages on, with Apple refusing to help the FBI unlock the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino shooters, people across the nation are debating public versus private rights to smartphone de-encryption.
While some claim Apple is siding with the terrorists, a recent John Oliver segment (Link: https://youtu.be/zsjZ2r9Ygzw) goes in detail describing the horrifying consequences of Apple creating a skeleton key to unlock anyone’s smartphone.
With smartphones being such an integral part of our lives, and as we download so much of our personal and private information into these handheld devices, it should be no surprise that in the past few years, we’ve seen more and more films from a new sub-genre in horror: Smartphone Horror. Below are the best and most terrifying examples of Smartphone Horror. All are available through YouTube.

We're just all kinds of thrilled to announce that Drew Daywalt, award-winning horror filmmaker and resident FEARnet blogger, has signed a deal with producer Eric B. Fleischman of Ebf Productions (Ritual, Two-Bit Waltz) to direct The Hurting Man, a supernatural horror feature based on his own original screenplay. If that news isn't awesome enough on its own, we should add that another genre luminary, Larry Fessenden (Habit, Wendigo, The Last Winter) will serve as Executive Producer on the film. In case you've been... I don't know, on Mars or something over the past few years, Drew burst onto the horror scene in 2007 with his award-winning short film Bedfellows, and since then he has directed dozens of acclaimed short films under the banner of Daywalt Fear Factory, episodes of the MTV horror-comedy series Death Valley, the webseries Camera Obscura and original programming for Tony Valenzuela's horror-centric channel BlackBox TV, and much more.

Emmy-nominated writer/director and FEARnet’s own School of Fear blogger Drew Daywalt is writing and directing a new feature-length film, The Passengers. Daywalt is behind awesome shorts like Bedfellows, Polydeus, Jack and The Laundromat.
The Passengers tells the story of a young trucker and his wife who are terrorized by the tortured spirits attached to a load of antiques that the couple has been commissioned to haul cross country. Edin Gali (Mad Men, Hemingway and Gellhorn) and Courtney Halverson (Death Valley, Red Clover) star in the upcoming film.
"We've been waiting for this opportunity for a couple years now. And since we're being financed through private investors, my team and I have the creative control to tell an intelligent, terrifying story. We're finally getting to make the film we want to make, in the way we want to make it. The plan is simple; tell a good story that...

Yesterday we heard from writer/director Eric England, who gave us a list of his five favorite independent horror features. Today we take a look at the up-and-coming indie director’s favorite genre shorts. Read on to see what short films have caught his eye over the years!
1. El Ciclo
This is one of my favorite shorts by a buddy of mine - and a very talented director - Victor Garcia. It's exactly what a good short film should be: tight, effective, and well executed.
2. Bedfellows
Who says scares have to take time? The first time I saw this short, I got goosebumps. I still love to pull it up and give my friends an unsuspecting scare. Not only that, but it's directed by Drew Daywalt, who has a knack for little horrors.
3. Eel Girl
This short gets me. Great effects. A naked girl. And a cool monster! It's sci-fi at its best!

The horror genre might be a better place because of the writer's strike a few years back. After all, if it hadn't been for the strike, Fewdio Productions may never have started and the world of independent horror would be an entirely different landscape. Originally founded by Drew Daywalt, David Schneider, John Crye, Kirk Woller, and Paul Hungerford, the group decided that just because all of them were facing a strike that would keep them from working, it didn't mean they were ready for a vacation just yet.
Daywalt took a few moments recently to speak with Dread Central about Fewdio and his upcoming web series "Camera Obscura".
Fewdio is a small production company that specializes in horror shorts. "We were all a little bit burned out on dealing with studio execs around the time the strike hit," explained Daywalt. "I had been a script writer for 17 years, and I'd...
