Prime Video Mexico is firing up a new original series, “Mentiras,” based on the popular Mexican stage musical.
Singer-actor Belinda and Luis Gerardo Méndez lead a stellar cast that includes Mariana Treviño (“A Man Called Otto”), Diana Bovio (“Lecciones para canallas”) and Regina Blandón (“Maquíllame otra vez”).
Gabriel Ripstein, whose credits include series “An Unknown Enemy” (“Un extraño enemigo”) and Berlin best first feature winner “600 Miles,” created the series and will serve as director and showrunner.
“In this adaptation, we will pay tribute to a story and characters that the audience adores and expand their universe, thanks to a completely innovative visual narrative,” Ripstein said. “To bring this story to life, told with more than 30 of the most successful songs of the ’80s, we have assembled a spectacular cast and crew.”
The move comes despite system-wide cutbacks announced in January that have seen layoffs across Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios and livestreaming platform Twitch.

The Boys universe is expanding yet again with The Boys: Mexico, a new series offshoot from Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Deadline has learned. Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal are set to executive produce and are considering taking on acting roles though neither would be major roles, sources shared exclusively with Deadline.
Details regarding the premise are being kept under wraps.
A search is currently underway for a co-showrunner to join creator, writer and executive producer Dunnet-Alcocer, who is now working on the script. The team behind The Boys: Mexico, which will be shot in the Latin American country, is working on budgets for the new series and they have yet to begin casting, sources said.
The Mexico-set offshoot comes from the main creative auspices behind the other series in The Boys franchise, the mothership’s developer Eric Kripke and his Kripke Enterprises, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures,...

Diego Luna Is Grateful ‘Andor’ Will End After Season 2: It’s ‘Really Important for My Mental Health’
When your day job is spent plotting a rebellion in a galaxy far, far away, it helps to have something that can bring you back down to Earth — or whatever planet you call home.
When he’s not the Empire’s most wanted on Disney+’s “Andor,” Diego Luna grounds himself by returning to the theater. He grew up going with his father, and it has been the constant of his career.
“In a way, it has kept me sane,” says the actor after a long day on the London set of “Andor” Season 2. “Theater is a great way to go back and put your feet on the ground and remind you what this is all about.”
In between production on seasons 1 and 2, he spent two months on a Madrid stage leading “Cada vez nos despedimos major,” a monologue that only featured himself, a musician and three lamps. It was...

ƒmovieMexico’s Alfonso Herrera, best known for his role as the impetuous nephew looking to usurp his drug lord uncle in “Ozark” and as a former member of the wildly popular band Rbd and its TV series “Rebelde,” has joined the cast of “Tesis sobre una domesticación,” a movie adaptation of the multi-awarded novel of trans actress-scribe Camila Sosa Villada.
Now shooting in Argentina, “Tesis…” is a co-production between Argentina’s Laura Huberman, Ramiro Pavón and Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna’s Mexico City-based La Corriente del Golfo.
“Tesis sobre una domesticación” (“Thesis on a Domestication”) relates the story of a successful trans actress (played by Sosa Villalda) and her gay lawyer husband who adopt a child, defying Argentina’s conservative society to form their own family unit. Their attempt at domestic bliss is disrupted when they visit the actress’s home town where her family resides.

Diego Luna returns with more episodes of Amazon Prime Video’s Pan Y Circo, a two-time Emmy Award-winning series that sees the actor share a meal with strangers to discuss various topics that are critical to the world at large from a Mexican perspective.
Due to the pandemic (and not because of his busy schedule working on Star Wars: Andor), the show has had to evolve in a multitude of ways. Mainly, instead of a Season 2, the series will drop four specials: “Access to Healthcare” (available to stream now), “Crisis in Democracy” (November 26), and early 2022 will see Luna travel from his kitchen in Mexico City to New York for discussions on immigration and social protests.
“There are many new things that we’re exploring on Pan Y Circo this time, the most exciting one is not that I’m going to cook—that’s quite disappointing for our guests—it...

Diego Luna is out promoting his Amazon series, "Pan y Circo," and in the process of doing so, he happened to let slip that another little show called "Star Wars: Andor" has finished filming. In "Andor," Luna reprises his role as Rebel spy Cassian Andor from "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." The series is a prequel to "Rogue One" and it has twelve episodes in the bag for next year when it hits Disney+.
"Pan y Circo" is a show, similar to Jon Favreau's "Dinner for Five" on IFC, in which Luna and various guests — including his "Y Tu Mama Tambien" co-star, Gael Garcia Bernal —...

A smile widens on Diego Luna‘s face when asked about what’s ahead for his Star Wars character Cassian Andor in the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: Andor. The cheeky grin is a combination of anticipation, excitement and a splash of secrecy regarding the 12-episode project he executive produced and stars in, set to be released in 2022.
“You’ll definitely see familiar faces,” Luna told Deadline about Andor while promoting the return of his Amazon Prime Video original series Pan Y Circo on October 8. “I can tell you about this project like no other because I can’t spoil the ending if you’ve seen [Stars Wars: Rogue One] already. No matter what I say, I can’t ruin the ending.”
While Luna shared a laugh about how open he is to discuss Andor’s big-screen demise, he also avoided getting too deep into what lies ahead in the prequel series. He did...

The Mexican actor and director has persuaded experts to join him on a new TV show to talk, eat and, hopefully, examine their own beliefs and prejudices
“Give them bread and circuses, and they will never revolt.” This cynical observation about the docility of the population in the face of provocation from government could as easily apply to ready meals and television as the amphitheatre with which Juvenal, the Roman poet to whom the phrase is attributed, was familiar. But for Diego Luna, the Mexican actor, producer, director and activist, it sparked an idea of how to examine the ills of his country.
His new Spanish-language show, Pan y Circo (Bread and Circus), which debuts on Amazon Prime today, is built around a simple concept – gathering disparate, expert voices on a variety of pressing topics, and giving them the floor. Or, in this case, the table.

Diego Luna has had one of the most intense years of his life. Beyond working on his new Amazon Prime Video series, “Pan y Circo,” he also struggled with both his children coming down with coronavirus preceding the global pandemic and stay-at-home orders that changed everything. But the Mexican actor and filmmaker likes to think positive, and right now he’s committed to helping the world transform itself with his new series.
“Pan y Circo” is about a lot of things, specifically the integration of food with everything from politics to social justice, from the environment to ethnic identity. In the series’ seven episodes Luna and a group of activists, reporters, and scientists get together to share a meal while debating issues affecting Mexico in general, but the world overall.
The sense of community is something Luna is excited to see, particularly with regard to how the show translates to American audiences.

The annual Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour is back, and though there’s no physical event this go-around, leading networks and streaming services are still slated to promote a variety of high-profile projects.
The 2020 installment of the event kicked off last week with three days of PBS panels and the press tour is continuing this week with shows from event mainstays such as Lifetime, AMC Networks, and National Geographic to the traditionally TCA-averse Netflix. The industry has changed significantly since the January Winter Press Tour and WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal are expected to spend their time promoting shows on their new HBO Max and Peacock streamers, respectively.
While Hollywood’s ongoing production issues have thrown the release dates of many highly-anticipated television projects into question, the TCA attendees are promoting several key titles that are expected to premiere in the near future. Chief among those are Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Raised by Wolves,...

Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal’s La Corriente del Golfo has teamed with Amazon Prime Video on a new issue-driven conversation series “Pan y Circo” (Bread and Circus), which will launch globally on the platform on Friday (Aug. 7).
Using an innovative new format of Luna’s own design, the series seats a group of different personalities with unique perspectives on a common subject around a table for a meal (the “pan”) and discussion (the “circo”). The table-centric model has hints of Facebook’s Jada Pinkett Smith-hosted “Red Table Talk,” though Luna has been developing this series for several years and the differences in the programs are perhaps more pronounced.
In “Pan y Circo” the meal share equal billing with the conversation, and each episode starts in the kitchen where Luna and that dinner’s chef kick off discussions about the topic and soup du jour. After the final course the meal is served,...
