A Nice Episode for the Brothers Relationship
katierose29521 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoy this episode. It doesn't offer a lot of answers of give any real resolution, but I'm okay with that. It's just a cool episode with a lot of scary scenes and nice moments between the brothers. "Croatoan" also shows how much pressure Dean is under. His suicidal mind set and questionable decisions are very apparent as the boys try to deal with the demonic virus. Dean also begins to tell Sam the truth about what John whispered to him in "In My Time of Dying" in this episode, but the full reveal will come out in "Hunted." All in all, "Croatoan" isn't vital to the story arc, but you should still give it a chance if you're watching on DVD.

"Craotoan" revolves around Sam getting a vision about Dean shooting someone. He's worried because Dean's been so edgy lately and his visions always have something to do with the Yellow Eyed Demon. He and Dean off to investigate the location of the shooting. It's an isolated Oregon town, where people are acting strangely. The word Croatoan is carved into a telephone pole. Sam points out that the same word was left in a tree after the Roanoke Colony disappeared. (Well, first he had to remind Dean that history class, wasn't the "How Bills Become Laws" segment of "School House Rock.) Then the brothers find the house of the guy that Sam saw Dean shoot in the vision. When they arrive, he's not home and his family is acting crazy. They've attacked the mother, pouring their blood into her wounds. Dean shoots the father, but the other son gets away because Sam can't kill him.

The boys take the woman to the local doctor's office. The entire town is going nuts. Road blocks are set up, keeping people inside the town limits. The phone don't work and the citizens are all attacking each other. They have a demonic virus. The mother is infected, too and Dean shoots her. The only uninfected people left, besides the boys, are a ex-marine Sargent, the doctor, nurse and possibly Dwayne. He shows up after and Dean can't bring himself to shoot him. (After a little guilt tripping from Sam.) Unfortunately, the nurse is infected and she bleeds on Sam. Dean won't let the others hurt his brother, but he tells them to leave in the Impala. But, the infected people have vanished and Sam seems to be immune to the virus. The boys leave town with more questions than answers. Dean begins to tell Sam about John's dying words. Meanwhile, Dwayne turns out to be a demon. He kills the Sarge and communicates with someone, telling them that Sam is immune.

There are some good parts to this episode. I like Dean driving the Impala away from the road block. It looks cool, swerving along the road. And I enjoy the car trip he and the Sarge have to take back to the doctors office, the two of them holding guns on each other. And when the Sarge complains that his neighbor, "Mr. Rogers" tries to kill him, Dean responds, "You got a neighbor named Mr. Rogers?" Sarges reply, "Not anymore," just makes me laugh. And I like the scene where Dwayne arrives at the doctor's office and demands to know where his parents are. Since Dean has killed both his mom and his dad already that day, it's pretty funny when Dean looks at Sam and mutters, "Awkward." I really love brothers talk together after Sam is infected. Dean just sits down across from him and refuses to go. Sam's begging him to leave, but without Sam, Dean doesn't really have anything to live for anyway. He just gives up. Explaining how tired he is and how he doesn't want to go on. He even gives the Impala to the others, which is a huge deal for poor Dean. Then at the end of the episode, he finally breaks down and starts to tell Sam the truth about what John whispered to him in "In My Time of Dying." His speech about how they should just take a break and visit the Grand Canyon is really beautiful. It's a great episode for their relationship.

On the down side, didn't Sam's vision GET someone killed in this episode? If Dean had just shot Dwayne, then the Sarge would still be alive. On the other hand, I'm still not sure if Dean should have killed the infected mother. I understand why he did it, especially since Sam was in the doctors office and Dean's a shoot first and ask questions later kinna guy when it comes to Sammy. But, it seems sort of harsh. It is cute that he looks to Sam for verification that she's one of them before he actually fires, though. Dean trusts Sam's judgment, which is why he doesn't shoot Dwayne. Dean's still spinning out of control, so I just don't know what the right thing to do was. It's complicated. Also, I'm confused about what Sam was being tested for. And was the Yellow Eyed Demon behind it? Doesn't he already know Sam is one of the psychic kids?

My favorite part of the episode: Dean pulling a gun on the Sarge and Dwayne when the threaten to hurt Sam. He's been complaining all episode that Sam needs to be more hard hearted and that the infected people aren't humans but "its." Yet, the second they move towards Sammy, Dean's threatening to kill every one of them. Well, not threatening so much as promising, his, "You make a move on him and you'll be dead before you hit the ground, you understand me?!" seems pretty much like a vow. It's a brilliant scene that shows how willing Dean is to abandon his black/white, good/evil ideas where his little brother is concerned.

Demonic Virus
claudio_carvalho6 July 2008
Sam has a vision of Dean killing a man with a scar on the forehead, and the Winchester brothers drive to the small town of Rivergrove, Oregon. They discover that the victim is Duane Tanner, a pacific local that lives with his family. Sooner they disclose that most of the dwellers are possessed by a demoniac virus transmitted by blood, and they believe that demons want to destroy Rivergrove with the virus and spread an outbreak to the other towns.

"Croatoan" is another great episode of this homogeneous Second Season of Supernatural composed of excellent shows. The story is a sort of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", with a demoniac possession of a small town by the contamination of blood of the victims. In the relationship of the Winchester brother, Dean seems that is going to tell to Sam what their father had whispered to him. The unexpected twist in the conclusion with Duane and Sarge is the promise of a great sequel of this wonderful series. My vote is eight.

The town of the walking dead
zombiehigh184 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
What makes season two my favourite is how the relationship between the brother's was stronger than ever. Each of them watching over the other, caring and worrying about him. The fact that they would die for each other in the blink of an eye was overwhelming, but above all, I loved the level of trust between them.

Sam gets another vision, But this time it is about Dean killing a young man tied to a chair thinking there was something in him. Dean is worried about he claims if he was going to kill someone he would have a good reason. Yet, Sam thinks Dean has been acting irrationally and crazy lately. They locate the guy, however they find out that the whole town is infected by a daemonic virus that turns people violent. The brothers and a few uninfected people including, an ex marine Sarge, seek refuge in a local clinic. Unfortunately the nurse attacks Sam and bleeds on him. Being infected, the Sarge tries to kill Sam, But Dean stops him, he gives him the keys to the Impala and asks him to take the others and head out of town, then locks himself in a room with Sam willing to die together. Sam asks Dean to just give him his gun to shoot himself and leave with the others to save himself, when Dean declines Sam asks him whether it was because of their dad, but Dean says that it was partly because John but there was something else. However, they find out later that the towns people are all gone and that Sam is immune to the virus. The brother's leave town not knowing what really happened back there, But when they are alone Sam asks Dean to explain what he said earlier. The episode ends with a cliffhanger of what Dean might tell Sam about John's secret.

This is one of the best episodes in season 2, with some heartbreaking moments. Especially when Dean gave up the keys to his precious Impala (The only thing he really had in life and his only real home) and locked himself with Sam willing to die with him. You can see that Dean is suffering under the crushing weight of the secret John had laid on his shoulders. Yet what hurt the most was when Sam got injured by the nurse that attacked him and he reached out his hand to Dean, but the Sarge held Dean back realizing that Sam was infected by the virus. The look on Sam's face was painful. Furthermore, What I liked the most was that when the time came Dean couldn't let Sam down and kill Duane. He had to trust Sam's judgment about him and take the risk.

But, The most important observation in this episode is: Jensen can cry and still look good but not Jared, not at all :).

On the downside there are some things that really bothered me about this episode:

1- I wished that Sam would believe in Dean more than he did at the beginning of this episode, comforting Dean a little more. I know the guy was worried, but had it been the other way around Dean would definitely reassure Sam.

2- I hated the idea that Dean killed Mr. Tanner before knowing what was really going on just because the guy attacked them with a knife. OK, I know the guy was dangerous and that Dean was eventually right in what he did but couldn't he restrain the guy in some way, it was not something I thought Dean could do (to kill someone) no matter how irrational he was.

3- I also hated that the nurse took down Sam way too easily. and When did she get ever infected in the first place? And why did she wait that long to get Sam alone? She had many chances with him before!

However above all, This episode raised a pile of important questions: Why was Sam immune? Did the daemons have to infect a whole town just to test Sam's immunity? (It was a way too complicated plan, I mean they could have done it in a thousand easier ways), Did they do the same test with the other psychic kids? Most important, Could The Yellow Eyed Daemon control Sam's visions to lead him to this town? If so, Why did he lead Sam to stop him and save that family in the "Salvation" episode?

I believe this episode will be used next season.
mm-3922 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I believe this episode will be used in season 3 as a reference of a future problem. Town residence disappear after a demonic virus infect's people through blood contact. What happened to all those people will eventually be discovered. The character development of Dean as cold blooded and out of control is revealed. Dean's salvation is with how he handled the possible infection of his brother. A few funny spots were Dean says I don't swing that way, and the guy who had Mr Rogers as a neighbor is great. Well directed and acted. I love the story and the reference to 'Night of the living Dead'. A zombie idea storyline. 9 out of 10

Token-type episode of the show at its best.
CubsandCulture12 September 2019
This episode does a really good job of balancing the principle elements of the show. We get a compelling case of the week with the Croatoan virus; the case works as both set-up and payoff for various elements of the mythos. We get some brotherly melodrama both because Dean dealing with the promise he made John and the scene of Dean admitting he is tired. The show has some funny bits that stand out. And the episode plays out as a riff on the zombie doomsday. Overall this is what the show tries to be. Croatoan is tight.

Great

Warning: Spoilers
This is the creepiest episode in Season 2. This has the most suspense because you won't know what's really going on and who else in town is going to turn against you. You can't get out, you don't know the cure.

This also has lots of mysteries hanging. What happened to the townspeople in the end? How did the virus started in town? And finally the cliffhanger at the end where Dean tells Sam what their dad told Dean at the first episode of the season.

The isolation of the town was also well illustrated. It was cold, rainy, and all you can see around are trees. With only one road going in and out of town, I'd panic if I was in that situation. Great episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Wonderful1! Great! Asome! Best one yet! I loved the plot there wasn't even a demon to the best of Sam and Dean's knowledge. So Sam has another vision and they go to a town where they find a word carved in a tree when they try to call for help phones don't work. they soon find out that a demonic infection that's past on by blood-to-blood contact has the whole town "quarantined". After seeing Mrs. Taner attacked by her family they find a clinic that to the best of their knowledge is safe. They find out Mrs. Taner has the infection they come to the conclusion that the only choice is to kill her before she infects more people. The clinic ends up not being safe and one of the doctors gets Sam alone and infects him. Everyone except Dean is convinced they should kill Sam When Dean says no Sam say "fine give me the gun and I'll do it." again Dean says no. He sends everyone else away tells Sam some very enlighten things I don't remember every thing. It turns out Sam was immune. The last scene of the show Dean tells Sam that their dad told him something before he died Sam asked what and it ended. I can't Wait for the next one.

???? NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS?!
sfnhzaj23 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Dean murders an innocent woman.

Yes! The mother was infected BUT keep in mind she was a at least an hour or more from turning and had done absolutely nothing wrong.

This whole episode is weird man. The brothers are so trigger happy to blast anyone with a smidge of demon related crap to them

Seriously watch the scene. The mom was cuddled up in a corner crying for help and Dean kills her. A few episodes back Dean was learning that not every thing he kills is actually evil. Well this????

Just a scared woman. No self defence. They didn't help once. Just cold and heartless.

They should've waited or tried to find another solution to help the poor woman. But nope let's just kill her aha so what.

More like so dumb.

So disappointing because it doesn't fall in line with the whole anti hero stuff for Dean, it feels so cold and evil. I guess you can't write perfect all the time.

Weird how no one has talked about this. If you just watch it as is it feels so so weird and wrong.
