Shocking and cold end that still holds up.

Warning: Spoilers
Parts 11-12 (Getting back to the scary stuff/an horrific end) Part 11 has the task to set up and fix the tone back to a creepy desperation story. It nails it perfectly. We get some great scenes here and I loved seeing Marvic Chens descent into madness. He just can't get over his greed of power, he really believes the Daleks follow him, the whole story does a great job of building up to that moment when he realises there going to kill him and it pays off. It's starts with the Daleks locking up all the alien delegates, seeing the effect of the time destucter at the end adds to this moment, the Daleks were going to leave them to die with the universe. Finally when Chen meets the supreme his time has come, the scene is so creepy and chilling, the music adding to it. What makes it so good is that we see Chen going mad, screaming for answers, the supreme just starring at him coldly not saying a word. This has to be the most chilling dalek death yet. So simple yet so effective. For the audience this so satisfying to see his end but still so scary, I can imagine this was especially scary for kids. Finally we get to see the time destucter in action, the dr uses it back against them and it almost kills him. The final scene is so tense/full of chilling moments that it's arguably the most horrifying end to a Dalek/Doctor who episode. I do wish though that when the alien delegates flee in there ships that Marvic Chen had hidden some explosions on them, would of been an shocking twist and shown how power mad he's gone and how closely he's becoming a Dalek. Plus although I like that the alien delegates get to flee to warn there people etc, it's an development arc that just happens and with no build up just feels like a wasted opportunity. I do really like how the characters personality effects there outcome, Steven often quite stubborn is safe and eventually saves the dr, Sara wanting to redeem her actions/be a good person is aged to death. It's a very impressive scene, not only horrific because the production decided to show us her skeletal remains. The doctor then moaning in agony just adds to this perfect scene, you just wonder what the hell is going to happen! It's a mix of excitement and fear. I even love the Daleks destruction too showing us a dying mutant. Animation can have alot of creative fun with this. The final moment of the Dr/Steven shows why you don't need over the top music, let the drama come from the scene. Just a wind sfx with the drs lines "what a terrible waste" makes the perfect cold ending.

For me Parts 1-6/10mins of part 8 (up to Trantis's death)/parts 11-12 is the best way to watch this. But I do think you should at least watch the whole thing at least once. Sadly though the Daleks master plan does create a severe problem, at this point in time the Daleks were everywhere, toys, books, films, stage plays etc you couldn't escape them. But adding to all this by making a 12 part story spanning several months was possibly the main reason Daleks/dalekmania eventually died. Rule number 1 of anything that gets really popular don't give the public/fans too much or you'll burn them out and they'll move on, which sadly some of the public did. Thankfully the Daleks/their popularity did come back. I do utterly love the daleks plan here, how they've waited patiently for Chens core to build up, and how horrible it is for him to spend all his life to be to used and killed, what a wasted life. Here the idea of using the time destucter that wipes out anything and turns it too dust is so creepy that I'm shocked and annoyed they've never tried to used it again. Or least let us see another or more in-depth episode/story of its effects. The stolen earth/journeys end did try this and it does also fall into the same problems this story did (mainly parts 8-10). Good set up with some good horror then ruined by a jokey light-hearted runaround. Except this story redeems it's self by bringing that tension and horror back plus going/pushing it far more darker in the final two parts. I've always said that a great way to make daleks scary is to show them being patient, evil and cunning with the characters around them being just like them or show us how people can become them or how they effect people. This story does mange to do all those some better than others, but what an amazing first try.

Shocking, epic, massive, pure brilliance.
Sleepin_Dragon26 October 2015
The climax of the fantastic, epic 12 part series is well worth waiting for, it's an utterly huge episode, up until this point I'd say it's the darkest of episodes, it signified a real change in direction for the show. The scenes of Sara ageing and turning to dust must have been quite shocking at the time, it was certainly a brave decision to kill off a second would be companion.

There are too many stand out moments to pick out one, but highlights include the Daleks informing Chen the the alliance has ended, Sarah's demise, and of course the big climax.

The music is utterly brilliant, it's such a dark and atmospheric episode, the music adds massively to it.

The level of acting, based on the audio alone is sensational, Hartnell is absolutely fantastic, if it did exist it would be interesting to see just how good he was, he really is the heroic figure here.

Not only is it the best single episode that doesn't exist, but it must also rank as one of the show's best episodes. The serial started off great, dipped a bit in the middle and ended in epic fashion.

I'll end with these words, find it and I'll become the happiest man on this planet.

10/10.

Darker than Dark

Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching this episode on its original broadcast and being terrified. Yes that's what Dr Who is supposed to do but this set new standards in fear.

The one part that has always stuck in my mind was the activation of the Time destructor which led to the horrible death of Sarah Kingdom played by Jean Marsh. Seeing her age and crumble to dust was almost too much to bear - although some would argue that this is what happened to her in Upstairs Downstairs anyway.

There is now a reconstruction of the episode on YouTube and it's very well done as it successfully bought back the terror of the original broadcast.

The Daleks' Master Plan: Part 12 - Brilliant epic adventure
A_Kind_Of_CineMagic19 August 2014
Review for all 12 parts:

This is an epic 12 part story from writers Dennis Spooner and Dalek originator Terry Nation, beginning with the episode The Nightmare Begins.

This adventure continues the story introduced in the episode Mission To The Unknown and features the Doctor trying to thwart the Daleks evil plans to conquer the solar system. It also features Nicholas Courtney (later to play Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, a series regular), as Bret Vyon. He, along with the regular cast, Kevin Stoney as villainous Mavic Chen and most other cast, perform superbly. The Daleks too are at their peak in many ways and are great villains for this epic. In addition there are the other interesting alien characters and even the return of the Meddling Monk (Peter Butterworth) from the Doctor's home world! The story even has the shocking deaths of no less than 3 of the Doctor's 'companions'!

The word epic is absolutely right for this mammoth story and it is incredible how the quality and interest is kept over an unprecedented 12 episodes. The only slight drop in quality being the 7th episode The Feast of Steven which is a Christmas special of a far more light- hearted and whimsical kind. To compare that episode and criticise it as a blot on the story is very unfair, you have to take it on its own as a special episode more comparable to the kind of comedy spoof used for charity telethons in later years. On that basis it is successful. The other 11 episodes are brilliant, exciting and well made.

A classic.

My Ratings: Episode 7 - 7/10, all other episodes 10/10

A Triumph To Finish
icewarrior-2672713 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, yes, YES! This is the most spectacular return to form I've ever seen, it's everything the first five episodes were, dark, tense and brilliantly paced. Hartnell after his little holiday comes back shining with an amazing performance as well as Chen having a great death scene where he even describes himself as the first ruler of the universe, revealing all the fantasies he's been playing through his mind the whole time!

When The Time Destructor starts crap really goes down. Slowly but surely everything around the Doctor and Sara rots and decays (Steven is safe in the TARDIS) but it unfortunately causes them both to collapse mere metres from the TARDIS. The jungle of Kembel has turned into sand and rock while Sara slowly ages to death in front of the camera, they took enough pictures of it to almost entirely reconstruct the scene and its really bloody chilling, especially when her skeleton disintegrates and blows away in the wind. With the Doctor only just surviving due to the Steven, the Time Destructor destroys everything on Kembel including the Daleks.

Both of them then step out the TARDIS for one of the most powerful scenes in Doctor Who of all time where they reminisce about all they've lost for this "victory" and it honestly put me in one of the most solemn, melancholy moods I've ever been in. Well played Mr Spooner, bloody well played.
