Sisko gets promoted
Tweekums11 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The final episode of the third season opens with Commander Sisko being promoted to captain. He doesn't have long to enjoy the promotion as an ambassador informs him that after a Coup d'état in the neighbouring system called the Tzenkethi, has led to a possible threat to some Star Fleet colonies nearby. To warn them off he is to take the Defiant to the border. Things go very wrong on the way when the ship is sabotaged in a way that has locked the controls and set them on an attack course against the Tzenkethi. It turns out that the ambassador was a shapeshifter, however unlike Odo this one can take the form of other people. This leads to a sense of paranoia as they hunt the shapeshifter as well as race to retake control of the ship before they plunge the Federation into an unwanted war. When it looks like they have run out of time Captain Sisko sets the ship to self destruct, leaving them a mere ten minutes to retake the ship.

This was a gripping episode, they scenes where they hunted the shapeshifter reminded me of "Alien", especially when Sisko is in the Jefferies Tubes... even if the Defiant if brighter and cleaner than the Nostromo. As the crew start to distrust each other and the sense of paranoia increases the atmosphere becomes more tense. The shapeshifters final words to Odo make it clear that we haven't seen the last of the Founders and that the Alpha Quadrant has been infiltrated at all levels.

Those Changelings REALLY suck!!!
planktonrules28 December 2014
Commander Sisko has just been promoted to captain (yippee). As his first assignment, he is to take the Defiant to some settlement across space to stop some rebellion. However, partway there, it becomes obvious that the Ambassador is actually a changeling and the entire mission is actually a chance for the Founders to star a huge intergalactic war!! Apparently, humanoid lives mean nothing to these annoying jerks! So, it's up to Sisko and the crew to regain control of their ship AND find the changeling now that he's disappeared into the ship.

This is a very tense episode with lots of surprises and twists. I also appreciated the ending when you see Odo do something you'd never expect! All in all, one of the better episodes--which is true of all the Changeling episodes.

By the way, it was rather funny in a small scene between Captain Sisko and Commander Eddington (the security guy recently assigned to DS9). Eddington wants to become a captain himself but complains that 'no one who wears yellow ever becomes a captain'. What about Kirk?

Let's Do Another Season
Hitchcoc17 October 2018
Sisko gets a promotion to Captain and takes a trip to squelch a coup. It turn out, however, that the changelings have arrived on the ship, disguised as an ambassador. The bulk of the plot involves trying to find the shape-shifter and neutralize him/it. This is a bit of a ragged episode, but what it does do is prepare us for the next season, where these folks will be the biggest challenge ever faced by the Federation. Good hook!

Basically the Thing as a DS9 episode
eaattenborough12 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I like John Carpenters the thing, and I like DS9. So I like this.

John Carpenter's The Thing is in my opinion one of the most perfect movies ever made, and Star Trek Deep Space Nine is a fantastic show, with great characters and compelling writing. And tv shows have to have a lots of stories for a season, so if they happen to have exactly the same plot (even down to the blood testing scene) then it's kinda like a re-make in my mind. And it works very well. It has enough changes to the original to still be it's own story and a great episode of the show whilst still paying homage in an interesting way to the original The Thing. I really like the changelings as a species and Odo's struggle of associating with them, it's a well written episode and the beginning of the peak of DS9 (in my opinion) with the struggle against the dominion. It also works great as a low key but ominous season finale.

Solid end to series 3
snoozejonc28 June 2022
Sisko attains the rank of Captain and the crew have a mission aboard the Defiant.

This is an enjoyable episode with some decent tension and lays the foundations well for the coming seasons.

The writers are obviously big John Carpenter fans given the basis for part of the drama is a homage to 'The Thing'. These scenes are done pretty well.

Importantly the writers show the threat posed by the Founders and in doing so there are some strong character moments for Odo that are revisited later on in the show.

This also starts DS9's ongoing serialised arc relating to the Dominion. This quite substantially departs from traditional Star Trek concepts with this method of storytelling and in some of its more violently themed attitudes of some characters. How you feel about this will influence your enjoyment for what comes later.

Rene Auberjonois for me gives the standout performance.

The visuals are some of the best seen in Star Trek at the time of its original broadcast. The set design for the defiant is great and likewise the shapeshifter effects.

For me it's a 7.5/10 but I round upwards.

Uniform Colours
stephenbelgrave-1310426 February 2019
Dear All,

I'm writing this review in response to a question asked by Martin: "what about Kirk?". The answer is very simple. During the original Star Trek the uniform colours were different. Gold/yellow was for command, Red was for engineering, operations and security and Blue was for medical and science personnel. When the Next Generation and DS9 series came out the uniform colours got switched around.

Red became the colour for command Gold became the colour for engineering, operations and security and blue remained the colour for science and medical personnel

Captain Benjamn Lafayette Sisko the most badass Captain in starfleet except for Janeway.

Warning: Spoilers
A good suspense/thriller style star trek episode.

I find it interesting that the Founders appear to have a system in place as a precursor to full out invasion. It is quite ingenious to plants the seeds of discord between Alpha Quadrant powers as a means to isolate the potential threats against invasion.

I do have to ponder the philosophical and psychological fallout that occurs when Odo killed the changeling ---- essentially he has killed a part of himself, right? That's going to require some extensive sessions with Troi to work through that mind warping situation.

The seasons ends with the Odo reciting the ominous last words of the changeling, "You are too late --- we are everywhere..."

SEASON 3 OVERALL:
  • The overall score for this season is 7.5 out of 10. That makes this tied for 3rd best season of star trek up until this point.

  • There was no 10/10 scores this season but there was three 9/10's and an absolute ton of 8/10's.

  • Odo/Kira/Quark continue to lead the way in terms of performance quality.

  • The Founders are well established as being a genuine threat. The secret sauce in that establishment is hammering home the idea that they are smart and calculated and view solids as substandard 'things'.

DS9 continues to show that it knows exactly what it is as a star trek show.

The best episode of the season was the 2 part episode with Odo/Garrak. You would have to work hard to have a stinker with those two professionals headlining an episode. I also have a soft spot for 'The House of Quark' as being an episode I find absolutely delightful.

OMG Finally something actually happens!
beanslegit5 April 2022
The last 4 or 5 episodes have been pretty much just filler, and finally now something real is happening. They actually leave DS9 that's how different this episode is!

I'm only halfway through and I'm captivated, definitely don't skip this one!

DS9 Roll Call! Avery, Colm, Terry, Armin, Rene, Siddig, Cirroc & Nana!

Yes, the most blandly named cast in television history finishes their third season with a strong episode: newly-promoted Captain Sisko takes his crew to their battleship for a mission, which is quickly sabotaged by a Dominion changeling. Who's real and who's not? Which crew members are in on the ruse? Good story, good action, and good performances combine to make an open-ended season finale without a contrived or over-the-top cliffhanger.

Deep Space Nine can be great Trek when it wants to be... here's hoping Season 4 will have more definitive, substantial episodes like this and less stray character story lines soaked in political/moral soup. Engage.
