Well Written Desilu Type Script

Warning: Spoilers
Even though this is Eve Arden , Kay Ballard, Roger Carmel and Herbert Ruddley, Bob Carroll Jr and Madeline Davis who wrote a lot of I Love Lucy Scripts touch shows in this episode.

Seems every time the Hubbards and the Buells go out to dinner, Roger always splits the bill 50-50 no matter who ate the most food. In classic Lucy fashion, Herb gets angry and obsessed with the the latest episode when Roger really rubs his nose in it.

The results are the usual comedic chaos as everyone including the kids get pulled into the fray. Spoiler - Roger does get the last laugh when he appears to make peace with Herb.

What else would he expect from the reincarnation of Henry VIII?

Warning: Spoilers
I can see Kay and Eve becoming friends. After all, as mothers they have their married children in common, but that's never enough for fathers. Roger and Herb are as different as night and day, in career, in manners, and in taste. Herb may be stuffy, but he's no snob, just competitive and penny pinching when it comes to what Rodger owes him after splitting a dinner check down the middle, having ordered much more along with Kay than Herb and Eve. Herb tries to get back his money in every way possible, and this brings about a quiet feud between the two that makes Roger realized what the issue is, but somehow he manages to continue to cheat his son's father-in-law.

Usually at the forefront of the conflict, Eve and Kay take a backseat although they do have a nice sparring moments over everything that they have done for the other couple. This is a nice little switch 2 Shelby veinte not interfering and Jerry and Suzie's marriage, but basically trying to resolve a different type of problem. Veteran comic Benny Rubin is the waiter. The episode on DVD also features a vintage Camay commercial with Kay and Eve. As much as the character of Rodger annoys me, particularly played by Carmel, this is probably one of his better episodes, but unfortunately, the season was wrapping up, and so would his time on the show over a salary dispute.

Hey, Big Spender

A typical dinner out with the Hubbards and the Buells ends with Roger (Roger C. Carmel) not paying his fair share of the $38 check, plus $6 tip. Herb (Herbert Rudley) is furious with his "tightwad" neighbor and plans to win back the money playing golf and gin rummy. Instead, Herb loses more money. Soon, the tension has involved Eve (Eve Arden) and Kaye (Kaye Ballard). Each takes her husband's side and 20 years of friendship goes down the drain. For this one, Jackie Gleason's "Honeymooners" writer Sydney Zelinka recycles situations and ideas very well, showing an understanding of Desi Arnaz' comedy and his characters. While derivative, it's still funny.
