Highlights of the main competitive strand that showcases top new Brazilian cinema.
The heart of Rio International Film Festival (Sept 24 - Oct 8) has always been the Première Brasil programme, that has kicked off today at the Cinepolis Lagoon.
One of the most prestigious sections of the festival and the main competitive one, Première Brasil has served as the leading local showcase of contemporary Brazilian cinema for the last 16 years.
Over 40 features and documentaries will be screened until October 8, when the jury awards will be presented. The programme often anticipates what will be seen in terms of Brazilian cinema in the international film festivals to come. The most striking example was Elite Squad, which opened Rio in 2007, winning the Golden Bear in Berlin the following year.
This edition includes the latest work from established veterans, such as Murilo Salles, who will present Means to An End, alongside promising new talents, such as Gregorio Graziosi and Daniel Aragão.

I was first introduced to writer/director Paul Solet through another indie genre director, Adam Green, who was serving as producer on Solet’s feature film debut, Grace, which premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in 2009. However, my first introduction to Solet’s horror sensibilities was through the disturbing (and sometimes hilarious) short film Means to an End he collaborated on with Jake Hamilton.
So when I had the idea of reaching out to independent genre filmmakers for this week’s Indie Horror Month coverage, Solet was a shoo-in. I knew his unique filmmaking vision would spill over into his list of his five favorite independent horror films, and I was right on the money. Check out Solet’s list below, and make sure to check in tomorrow for our final two lists!
1. Deathdream
Anyone looking to make a smart genre film on a budget needs to study what Bob Clark did with Deathdream.

The new album is to be produced by Toby Wright. Mr. Wright has previously worked with several famous rock and metal bands like Korn, Slayer, MÖTLEY CRÜE, In Flames, Stone Sour, Kiss, Fear Factory, and Ozzy Osbourne and many more.

If I may get a little incestuous for a moment… It’s always nice to see filmmakers whom Fango gave an early boost making good, and the recently released Blu-ray and DVD of Grace showcase three directors who were part of our Blood Drive short-film compilation discs. Not only are there Means To An End creators Paul Solet, who wrote and helmed Grace, and Jake Hamilton, who chronicled its trip to the Sundance Film Festival, but also Mainstream’s Adam Barnick, who put together its exemplary behind-the-scenes package.
The multiple featurettes demonstrate that this story of a very unusual birth and the unsettling events that follow was a (no pun intended) labor of love, and it’s also clear from the conviction with which Solet spins his weird tale that it was a passion project for him. First excerpted by Solet as a six-minute short of the same title, the...
