We’re back with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes Save Yourself first details, a new clip from The Well, a look at the first four minutes from Discopath, the teaser trailer for Bestseller, and much more:
New Clip from The Well and Screening Details: “At the edge of an expansive barren valley, all that remains of The Wallace Farm for Wayward Youth is a few hollowed-out husks of buildings. Seventeen-year-old Kendal (Haley Lu Richardson) can barely recall when the Oregon valley was still lush. It’s been a decade since the last rainfall, and society at large has dried up and blown away. Kendal and the few others that remain barely scrape by, while dreaming of escape. When a greedy water baron lays claim to what little of the precious resource remains underground, Kendal must decide whether...

Horror has been in Canada's snow for decades now, starting with the classic Cannibal Girls and Black Christmasin the early '70s, through the classic early Cronenberg years of Shivers, Rabid and The Brood in the late '70s. In the '80s, we got films like Prom Night, My Bloody Valentine and The Gate. In the past decade, we've had flicks like the Ginger Snaps series, Cube and PontyPool. In fact, you could even count the last three Dead movies by George A. Romero as Canadian — after all, he is a Canadian citizen now and made all three films in Toronto.
Being both a film writer and a host of a monthly horror film series called Fright Nights at the Projection Booth (based out of Toronto, Canada), I have noticed an incredible renaissance of grindhouse and horror directors coming out of Canada in the past few years. Southern Ontario,...

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Chad Archibald.
**Here be some spoilers.
Director/writer: Chad Archibald.
Neverlost is the latest thriller to creep out of Guelph, Ontario, from writer and Director Chad Archibald (Desperate Souls). This title is showing theatrically June 16th in Montreal and more details on this showing are available here (Neverlost - Montreal Showing). Neverlost is firmly set in the genre of psychological thriller, with the addition of some horror and gore scenes to unsettle viewers. Archibald's latest film dabbles in two spheres of reality and you will be asking yourself: what is real and what is not? But, does the question even matter, when what the viewer and Josh, the central protagonist, experience both appear real? This reviewer would argue that both are real, to the extent that if the experience appears and feels real, then it is. In the end, Neverlost is an exciting indie feature,...

In the new indie horror flick If a Tree Falls, more kids get in a car for a scenic trip through the countryside and make it to their destination, happy and unscathed. Of course I'm bullshitting. That would be a completely awful movie, no?

"From Dawn to Dusk...Help is Not Coming"
From director Philip Carrer (Desperate Souls) and writer Ryan Barrett (Psycho Ward) comes the harrowing horror thriller "If A Tree Falls". If A Tree Falls has been winning rave reviews from various horror film websites. Looking at the trailer, it looks at though the film is intense, suspenseful and creates a tangible connection to the fear that the characters are experiencing.
In "If A Tree Falls", siblings, Brad and Lisa Carpenter, along with two lifelong family friends, Will and Vanessa, set out to cross Eastern Canada en route to an annual family reunion. Their road trip takes them through the scenic, isolated countryside of New Brunswick, on a blistering hot summer day. They eventually make the decision to find an appealing place to stop halfway, and camp for the night. The group thinks they have found the perfect haven, when they are...

Today we got word of a new indie project entitled In the House of Flies, which promises that, unlike previous horror films with people ‘trapped’ in a situation, this film is largely based on character instead of shock factor.
Canadian genre writer and director Philip Carrer, aka Pgc (If a Tree Falls, Troma Films’ upcoming fall 2011 release Kill, and the Lionsgate /Alliance Atlantis release Desperate Souls), along with producer Chad Archibald, surfaces once again in bringing Angus McLellan’s horror/thriller In the House of Flies to life.
Synopsis:
Set in the “retro” 1980's, In the House of Flies focuses around an abducted couple forced to tackle their way to freedom. Alone, isolated, and locked in an undisclosed suburban basement, Heather and Steve find themselves surrounded by numerous mysteriously sealed suitcases - each containing valuable clues to their very own survival. Both Heather (Lindsay Smith) and Steve (Ryan Kotak) must...
