Swingers sure can be boring
lor_14 March 2023
Paul Thomas goes retro with "Key Party" one of his lifestyle movies but without a real story or multi-dimensional characters. It seems doubly dated, watching hedonists and swingers from 2004 pretending for a night that it's still the 1970s (as heralded by the partygoers first dancing around in quaint disco fashion).

After some preliminary minor intros to some of the players (taling to the camera in black & white self-serving fashion), the party begins with some bickering, acrimony and even a brief catfight. Then, in sort of time-honored tradition (pardon my sarcasm), the guys' car keys go into a fishbowl and each lady picks one out of the bowl at random to determine her sex partner. The rest of the movie, over an hour and a a half, is all-sex, with oddly enough threesomes emphasized rather than the expected couples.

Nominal snippet of a "story" has sex researcher Steven St. Croix throwing the party, with the upshot being his wife walking out on him after all that sex.

Once again, lots of beautiful actresses having sex is the entire point, with the patina of "Couples Film" a fake - used to promote the all-sex format as the fans' logical alternative. Two decades later they've gotten their wish -almost every new release has dropped storytelling either entirely or include so little as to be insulting to one's intelligence.
