With the eve when the veils between worlds is at its thinnest around the corner, it’s difficult not to think of the day’s most prominently featured figure: the witch. Below is an essential viewing list, ranging in genre and targeted age group, of filmic work that showcase witches (loosely defined for our purposes) and show just how badass and horrifying these heralds of the supernatural can be.

American Horror Story: Coven
Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk
USA, 2013
This anthology television series, which premiered last week, promises another visually stunning horrifying boundary pushing work with its third season. Coven begins by following young Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), who discovers her supernatural roots in a rather gruesome incident and is then whisked off to a private school for ‘talented’ young women. Set between the present day and the 1830s, Coven promises a panoply of witch-related themes including witch hunts,...

Owen Wilson is getting his action on with James Bond, as Variety reports a new cast addition to the thriller The Coup. From Drew Dowdle and John Erick Dowdle, the brothers behind behind Quarantine (aka [Rec] remake) and M. Night Shyamalan-produced Devil, the action drama follows “an American family in their new overseas home soon finds themselves caught in the middle of a coup, and they frantically look for a safe escape while rebels mercilessly attack the city.”
Joining the cast is Pierce Brosnan, who will play “a mysterious and ultimately heroic government operative” who is described as “the perfect compliment to Owen’s everyman dilemma.” The actor’s last great performance was in Roman Polanski‘s The Ghost Writer and judging from these directors, I can’t imagine this will be anything more than a good time, but it’s nice to get back to the action game after...

The CW has finally found its Carrie Bradshaw, the role originally made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker in the HBO hit "Sex and the City."
After months of speculation, the lucky actress playing Bradshaw in the CW prequel, "The Carrie Diaries," is AnnaSophia Robb, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Robb, 18, is perhaps best known for her role in 2007's "Bridge to Terabithia."
Based on the novel by Candace Bushnell, "The Carrie Diaries" focuses on a young Carrie Bradshaw -- before the Manolo Blahniks -- as she grows up in a small town during the 1980s, learning about love, sex, friendship and family while still balancing the day-to-day drama of high school.
"Running Wilde" actress Stefania Owen will co-star opposite Robb. According to EW, Owen will play Carrie's younger sister, Dorrit.

What's old was new again as Disney's iconic "The Lion King" became the #1 movie at the box office over the weekend, taking in an estimated $29.3 million with a souped-up 3-D redo of the 1994 original.
"Drive," one of the year's best-reviewed films, was #3 in its weekend debut, while the poorly reviewed remake of "Straw Dogs" and Sarah Jessica Parker's even-worse-reviewed "I Don't Know How She Does It" both flopped in their debuts. Last week's #1 movie, "Contagion," dropped to #2 this week.
"The Lion King" 3-D re-release earned more than the other three new releases combined. The film's original-run, IMAX re-release (back in 2002) and the past weekend's numbers pushed "The Lion King" from #25 to #17 on the all-time domestic box-office chart, according to Box Office Mojo. The animated tale,...

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact that impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
September is the start of the film festival season. Unsurprisingly, while Toronto, Venice, and New York debut the flicks we’ve been waiting all year to see, the box office decides to finally give the public a glimpse at what’s been making the rounds since last September. There are also some bigger studio works on the way and almost all are sadly lacking on marketing aesthetic. It’s a better month for posters than the last, but bad still reigns supreme. Hopefully the upcoming Oscar season...

Netflix has revolutionized the home movie experience for fans of film with its instant streaming technology. Netflix Nuggets is my way of spreading the word about independent, classic and foreign films being made available by Netflix for instant streaming. Important Note: There may be some films that do not become available on the specified dates. This is merely a report of the most accurate release dates I can find, but is not directly confirmed by Netflix themselves.

Curious George. Harold and the Purple Crayon. Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. Classics each and every one. Call it a babysitter in a box or call it a great tool for educating your children, either way what we have on our hands here is 19 hours of story books new and old converted to a digital medium. Some of these genuinely are treasures reincarnated in an animated medium while others are newer stories that have yet to prove their heirloom mettle. However, your average tot won’t care as much about the legacy of a given story as they will about the presentation. A majority of the stories found on these 16 discs have received the full animation treatment from the humble illustration origins, but there are a few in the collection which are little more than scans of the pages being panned over by the camera. Depending on the age...

Julia Roberts wowed the fashion world in a vintage Valentino gown while accepting the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2001, but her love of all things vintage didn’t end there. She went on to select vintage names for all three of her children with husband Danny Moder — 4 ½-year-old twins Hazel Patricia and Phinnaeus Walter, and 2-year-old Henry Daniel. According to nameberry.com co-founder Pamela Redmond-Satran, Julia was simply following a popular trend. “Celebrity parents are leading the way for the rest of us by reviving some of these old-fashioned names, dusting them off, and making them seem fresh and new.”
So what’s the appeal? Pamela explains,
“Vintage names are finding favor with parents who want something a bit different from the classics such as Elizabeth or David that have been widely-used for decades, but that still have deep roots and staying power, that go beyond the name of the moment.
