Exclusive: ICM Partners has bagged a big one. The agency’s publishing department has signed Nelson DeMille, the author of 15 bestselling novels. He was repped forever by Nick Ellison, but I’m told they quietly parted ways awhile ago. DeMille routinely sells millions of books with bestsellers By The Rivers Of Babylon, Cathedral, The Talbot Odyssey, Word Of Honor, The Charm School, The Gold Coast, The General’s Daughter, Spencerville, Plum Island, The Lion’s Game, Up Country, Night Fall, Wild Fire, The Gate House, and The Lion. He also co-authored Mayday with Thomas Block. DeMille is one of those authors who has made a ton of movie option deals, only to see most of them languish in development hell. The John Travolta-starrer The General’s Daughter was the one big feature (the 1999 film grossed $143 million worldwide). His books Mayday and Word Of Honor were turned into telepics. Sony...

Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman’s directorial debut Jack Goes Boating is a minimalistic exploration of New York relationships, from a blue-collar perspective. The film’s subtle wit shines through awkward moments and Seinfeld talk-about-anything humor without the schtick. While it doesn’t have the same resonance as the theatrical play it was based on, the film adaptation still does an excellent job of bringing to life four working class people through excellent acting performances by Hoffman, Amy Ryan, John Ortiz and Daphne Rubin-Vega. After Boating, it’s clear that Hoffman can be just as captivating behind the camera as he is in front. The Blu-ray release sadly comes with only two special features that, while noble in attempt, come off as shallow add-ons, which would have benefited from ten extra minutes to breath.
In Jack Goes Boating, Hoffman stars as the title character who is an oddball symbol...

While not quite a household name in the United States, Germany-based 1970s disco group Boney M were chart-toppers in Europe in their prime. And their music was immensely popular in my home while growing up in Nigeria. The original members of the group were Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett from Jamaica, Maizie Williams from Montserrat, and lead singer, Bobby Farrell from Aruba. They disbanded in 1986 after big hits like Daddy Cool, Rasputin, and By the Rivers Of Babylon.
I learned this morning that lead singer Farrell died yesterday, Thursday morning, at age 61 while on tour in Russia. His agent said that he was found dead in his hotel room in St. Petersburg by hotel staff, after he failed to respond to a wake-up call.

Boney M star Bobby Farrell has died at the age of 61. The singer, who was on tour in Russia, was found dead in his hotel room in St. Petersburg on Thursday, December 30 morning. Farrell's body was reportedly discovered by hotel staff after he failed to respond to a wake-up call.
The pop star's agent, John Seine, tells Afp, "(Farrell) was found dead in his bed... The cause of death is not known... He was not feeling well (on Wednesday night)... This morning, he did not wake up." Farrell performed as scheduled in the city on Wednesday night but reportedly complained of breathing difficulties before and after the show.
The vocalist, born Roberto 'Bobby' Alfonso Farrell, rose to fame with Boney M in the 1970s, scoring a number of hits including "Daddy Cool" and "By the Rivers of Babylon". The group disbanded in 1986, but Farrell continued to perform.

A particular branch of the music world is in mourning today, as news came out of Russia that Boney M frontman Bobby Farrell was found dead in a hotel room in St. Petersburg on Thursday (December 30). He was 61 years old. The dance pop superstar — who rose to prominence on the back of singles like "Ma Baker," "Rivers of Babylon" and "Hooray! Hooray! It's a Holi-Holiday" that were massive and beloved in Europe — had just performed a concert the night before in the Russian city, where Boney M were still quite popular (mostly due to the success of their single "Rasputin").

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Ryan in Jack Goes Boating. Philip Seymour Hoffman makes his directorial debut with Jack Goes Boating, a ducky if unconventional romantic comedy adapted by playwright Bob Glaudini. Hoffman co-stars as Jack, a reggae-obsessed limo driver with an Asperger’s-like social awkwardness. Jack lives inside his headphones repeating the Melodian’s “Rivers of Babylon” over and over, his short blond/gray hair twisted into a version of white-man dreadlocks tucked under a knitted hat. His only friends are fellow diver Clyde (John Ortiz) and Clyde’s wife, Lucy (Daphne Rubin-Vega). When Lucy introduces Jack to the equally unusual Connie (Amy Ryan), Jack discovers his raison d’être. Inspired, Jack learns to cook and to swim, taking lessons from Clyde so he can give Connie the romantic boat ride she longs for.

Mel Torme aside, the soundtrack for "Jack Goes Boating" is heavy with highly revered indie rock acts like Grizzly Bear and Fleet Foxes and Cat Power. Some incredible 70's soul and 60's Reggae round out Philip Seymour Hoffman's directorial debut and it looks like this might be the soundtrack to beat this Fall. And who doesn't like a little Mel Torme anyway?
The film follows a limo driver named Jack, played by Hoffman, whose love for reggae inspired him to sort of grow dreadlocks. He dreams of working for the Mta while hanging out with fellow driver Clyde and his wife Lucy. When the couple set Jack up with Connie, Jack decides takes swimming lessons from Clyde so he can "give Connie the romantic boat ride she dreams of."
Character driven relationship dramady ensues. Listen to some of the tracks I found most compelling, including the strangely beautiful "Dearly...

Throughout his career, former Fugees leader has been an outspoken advocate for his homeland.

Wyclef Jean officially announced his bid for the presidency of his native Haiti on Thursday's (August 5) "Larry King Live." Word began to surface last month that he was considering a run for the position. The job comes with a five-year term that would likely keep him out of the music game until 2015.
If news of Jean's political ambitions caught anyone by surprise, they clearly haven't been paying attention to the former Fugees leader's non-musical efforts for the past 15 years.
While Wyclef — who was born outside the country's capital, Port-au-Prince, and raised in Brooklyn, New York — was one of the first celebrities to call for assistance for his Caribbean homeland in the wake of January's devastating earthquake, the 37-year-old has been at the forefront of Haitian relief for much of his career.

New York (AP) — Though the all-star telethon was titled "Hope for Haiti Now," for most of its two hours, it was filled with tear-jerking, depressing moments, from mournful songs and grim-faced pleas from celebrities to the suffering faces of the quake-battered victims themselves. It took Haiti's own native son to lift Friday evening's despairing tone to one of hope and even revival. "Enough of this moping, man, let's rebuild Haiti, let's show 'em how we do it where we come from!" Wyclef Jean, the singer and producer, shouted after singing the downbeat "Rivers of Babylon," with a Haitian flag around...

More and more big musicians performed on the stage of "Hope for Haiti" telethon. After witnessing the likes of Madonna and Christina Aguilera's performances, the concert saw the highly-anticipated all-star duet among Rihanna, Jay-z and Bono.
The three stars joined forces in a new song called "Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour)" which is specifically produced by Swizz Beatz for the relief effort. Before Rihanna came onto the stage with Jay-z and the U2's vocalist, Beyonce Knowles showed her support along with Chris Martin, who played on the piano. She delivered "Halo" live from London, changing its lyrics to "Haiti I can see your halo."
In between the all-star performances, captures of celebrities taking the calls from generous people were shown. "A whole lot of littles make a whole lot of lots," so Stevie Wonder was overheard telling one of the callers. Before the show was ended, Jennifer Hudson sang...

Tonight's George Clooney-organized, multi-network Hope For Haiti Now telethon was a subdued, classy affair, thankfully free of any awkward "George Bush doesn't care about black people" moments. In all, the two-hour telecast included 19 musical performances, most of which were terrific. I could name two female artists who were a bit out of their league, but since they were singing for charity, I won't. Instead, I'll run down what were, in my humble opinion, the 10 best numbers of the night. (You can download them all, by the way, on iTunes.) 10. Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris I confess I'd never heard of Matt Morris before.

While earthquake relief in Haiti was the reason for and inspiration behind "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief," there's no question that it featured some amazing, one-of-a-kind musical performances.
The songs chosen by most of the artists had a thematic connection to the occasion, and the soaring lyrics delivered by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Mary J. Blige and Justin Timberlake underlined the hope for the country that's coming from around the world. The songs' unplugged, often gentle renditions underscored the seriousness of the situation.
George Clooney helped organize the event, and his hope is that the songs carry the event beyond the evening and into the following weeks, months and years.

With the Haitian flag twisted around his neck, Wyclef — who immediately traveled to his homeland in the aftermath of last week's earthquake and subsequently raised millions of dollars for relief efforts — opened the evening's final live performance with a snippet of the reggae classic "Rivers of Babylon."
