It has been nearly a year since 36 people were killed in a deadly blaze in an Oakland, California, warehouse, which was home to local artists. Now, the city is honoring the victims with a special tribute.
Artists Chris Treggiari and Peter Foucault, who lost friends in the Dec. 2 fire, designed an altar in city hall for the victims, Justin Berton, a spokesman for Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf tells People.
“In observance of the Ghost Ship fire tragedy one year later, there will be a temporary altar placed in City Hall from Monday, November through Saturday, December 2, where handwritten notes and remembrances can be left,...

2017-08-08T12:54:52-07:00Chris Brown Draws Fire with Creepy Comment About Rihanna
Chris Brown posted a flirty comment on an Instagram photo of his ex-girlfriend Rihanna from the 2017 Crop Over festival in her home country of Barbados on Monday, August 7.
After the "Work" singer, 29, showed off her eye-catching, barely there costume, which featured a bedazzled bra and colorful feathered wings, eagle-eyed fans noticed that the comments section included a message from none other than Brown, 28. He simply commented with an emoji of a pair of googly eyes, which people often use to express their attraction to another person.
Many fans were quick to criticize the "Party" crooner for leaving his mark, likely due to the former couple's volatile past. "Leave her alone!!" one Instagram user replied, while another added, "Pls keep your negative energy away from Rihanna."

"Find them, kill them..." Throw on a poncho, you're about to get splattered with fake blood. If you haven't seen the trailer for this film, and you can stand buckets of blood, you need to watch it. Turbo Kid was one of the films playing in the Midnight category at Sundance this year, and while I never got to see it myself, I heard that it was pretty crazy. This trailer finally lets us in on just how insane it is, with gore like no other in a retro unrated action movie gone mad. The film stars Munro Chambers, Laurence Leboeuf, Michael Ironside, Edwin Wright, Aaron Jeffery and Romano Orzari. This seems kind of like a low budget splatter version of Scott Pilgrim, though SlashFilm said it's "like no other film in the last decade". Fire it up! Here's the trailer for François Simard, Anouk Whissell & Yoann-Karl Whissell's Turbo Kid,...

The Walking Dead, Season 5, Episode 6: “Consumed”
Directed by Seith Mann
Written by Matthew Negrete & Corey Reed
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on AMC
“Consumed” follows Carol and Daryl in pursuit of the mysterious vehicle that belongs to Beth’s kidnappers. The dynamic duo make good progress into the city eventually arriving at a safe house while running into the occasional zombie along the way. The hour proves harmless enough for the pair of seasoned veterans, and while at times exciting, “Consumed” is a predictable, voyage into the heart of Atlanta. But despite a lack of suspense and horror, “Consumed” is a welcome return to two of the show’s most compelling characters; and an episode that gives two of our least talkative survivors a chance to express themselves and some much-needed breathing room to examine how much they’ve both changed in five seasons.
Despite Daryl’s presence, the...

Benny Benassi at The Mid
This week I attended my first ever House Music DJ set at Chicago’s The Mid featuring none other than legendary DJ and Producer Benny Benassi. The venue was ideal for this kind of event, which sold out immediately and was jam-packed. With an air cooler machine shooting down cold air onto the audience I danced my bum off to Benassi’s classics like “Satisfaction” and “California Dreaming.”
Benassi is currently gearing up for the release of his new album Electroman out June 7, featuring his track “Spaceship” with Kelis & The Black Eyed Peas’ Apl.d.Ap as well as his latest single “Cinema” with U.K. singer Gary Go. Benassi has also teamed up with Chris Brown on Brown’s latest album F.A.M.E. on the track “Beautiful People” which is slowly turning into my summer anthem and has the power...

Edward Cullen is without question the most iconic movie vampire of the 2000s. Critics cannot argue with that (go ahead, try to argue, critics; I’ll wait). However, many take issue with “The Twilight Saga’s” portrayal of vampires, complaining that it breaks many of the genre’s ”rules.”
While it’s true, does that really matter since it’s all fiction, anyway? And aren’t rules, as they say, meant to be broken? (Imagine if Batman still looked like this.) The answer depends on whom you ask.
In this week’s column, I compare Edward with his blood-sucking predecessors, matching him up with the most iconic film vampire from each era.The breakdown should give Twi-Hards a better understanding of the lineage “Twilight” draws upon… or choices to ignore. Use the information as you see fit: to defend Edward’s character, to criticize it, or to stock in your...

The 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival is set to run June 17-27 in a brand new location. Oh, it’s still in L.A, but it’s moving across town, from Westwood — where it’s been held the past few years — all the way over to Downtown.
The main “hub” for the fest will be the new L.A. Live complex, but there will also be screenings at other locations, such as the Downtown Independent and Redcat theaters. The city is really trying to build downtown up into a major arts and culture hub, so the festival moving there fits in with that agenda. Film Independent, the organization that runs Laff, also runs the annual Independent Spirit Awards, an event that also moved downtown — from Santa Monica — this year.
On Bad Lit, I tend to like to put up festival lineups that include days and times of screenings. However, since I...

Shanghai
Opens: 2010
Cast: John Cusack, Gong Li, Ken Watanabe, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chow Yun-Fat
Director: Mikael Hafstrom
Summary: In the months leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, an American man arrives in Shanghai to find his friend recently murdered. In investigating his friend's death, he stumbles upon a secret the United States government has been keeping and falls in love in the process.
Analysis: After being granted permission to shoot in the Chinese city, the $10 million production found its permit quickly being revoked by the Government who expressed concerns about the script. The result is Bangkok and the United Kingdom standing in for the real Shanghai which seems kind of against the entire point.
Cusack himself has emphatically endorsed the project in interviews, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", but being stuck at the cash-strapped Weinstein Company means that its release plans are unsure beyond a vague promise of a limited bow around Easter.

To catch everyone up, Raphael Saadiq was the former lead singer for Tony! Toni! Tone!, earned a #2 R&B smash with "Ask Of You" from the Higher Learning soundtrack, produced huge hits for D'Angelo and Joss Stone, and contributed as a songwriter to or collaborated with Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, The Roots, Lionel Richie, John Legend, Macy Gray, Erykah Badu, Babyface, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Bee Gees, Snoop Dogg, Q-Tip, Ludacris, and many others. He even played Anthony Hayes in the Shia LeBeouf breakout flick Disturbia, those acting chops again on display in his retro music clip "Let's Take A Walk." Though his latest album The Way I See It was released back in September 2008, Saadiq still is touring and promoting the project pretty much non-stop. He took a quick break from his schedule for the following...
