We salute 50 of the finest contemporary films with budgets of less than $10million. Did your favourite make the list…?
In this age of multi-million dollar blockbusters and eye-watering fees paid to some actors, you may forget we’re in an age of austerity. However, for the vast majority of the film industry, there is no huge vat of money, nor has there ever been. But this hasn’t stopped some of the finest films of recent years being made on a relative shoe-string, and in some cases, quite literally with a shoe-string.
I reckon filmmaking thrives at the sharp end, and low budgets mean more creative ideas, and as a result, more engaging films. To prove this, here is a list of what I consider to be the finest 50 contemporary films made for under $10 million. There is a breathtaking array of recognisable genre pictures in here, too, with budgets rangin...

Alexa here. When I played with paper dolls as a child, the hours passed like minutes. The same is true of watching a great film, so the marriage of the two thrills me more than it probably should. I've posted on some great cinematic paper dolls before (Alex Kittle's Some Like It Hot doll was a particularly strong example), and lately I've come upon even more. Here are some of my new favorites.
Claudia Varosio, whose film poster prints I've heralded before, has started creating paper doll prints. Here's her Margot Tenenbaum, along with Vincent Gallo from Buffalo 66 (complete with bowling ball).
And in another celebration of the dishy Colin Firth, here's MellyMo fridge magnet set.
More paper dolls including Hedwig & Woody after the jump

Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere won Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival 2010.
Quentin Tarantino, this year’s head of the Jury said:
“This is a film that enchanted us from our first screening; yet, from that first enchanting screening it grew, and grew, and grew, in both our hearts and our analysis.”
Somewhere stars Stephen Dorff, Elle Fanning, Benicio Del Toro, Michelle Monaghan, Laura Chiatti, Simona Ventura among others.
Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is a bad-boy A-List actor stumbling through a life of excess while living at Hollywood’s legendary Chateau Marmont Hotel. His days are a haze of drinks, girls, fast cars and fawning fans.
Johnny has lost all sense of his true self. Until, that is, his 11-year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) unexpectedly shows up and unwittingly begins to anchor him. Johnny’s fragile connection to real life slowly revives in her presence…

"True Blood" star Alexander Skarsgård has gained American heartthrob status as the show's thousand-year-old Viking vampire Alex, but even if the role is clearly make-believe, the Nordic charm is all his. Son of famed actor Stellan Skarsgård, the Stockholm-born thespian has a long and storied career in his homeland, from becoming a child actor to being named the sexiest man in Sweden circa 1999. Not to be confused with his upcoming part in Lars von Trier's highly anticipated sci-fi flick "Melancholia," Skarsgård the younger's latest project is director Tarik Saleh's highly stylized, animated sci-fi flick "Metropia."
Set in a dystopian world of the not-far-off future where the world's resources are running out and the metro system connects all of Europe, "Metropia" concerns a newly paranoid Swedish everyman Roger (voiced by Vincent Gallo) as he begins to hear a voice in his head that isn't his own. In fact, it's...

Pittsburgh just got a little more interesting.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has reported that Alfre Woodward (Desperate Housewives) has joined the cast of CBS’s new Pittsburgh based hospital drama Three Rivers. Alfre will play lead doctor Sophia Jordan, who was originally played by Julia Ormond in the pilot.
Three Rivers chronicles the lives of three different worlds. First, the lives of the doctors who work in transplant surgery, second, the family of the transplant giver, and lastly, the transplant receiver. The series also stars among others, Moonlight’s Alex O’Laughlin as Dr. Andy Yablonski and Katherine Moennig as two docs that are could be a little too passionate for the patients, which causes them to butt heads with Dr. Jordan. Alex and Katherine will return to Pittsburgh to shoot on location for multiple episodes the Post Gazette also reports.
Also announced earlier this month was that relative newcomer Amber...
