A.A. Milne’s beloved children’s creation Winnie the Pooh is celebrated every year on Jan. 18, Milne’s birthday.
The children’s icon got its start via a black bear named Winnie (apparently the former mascot of the Winnipeg regiment of the Canadian army, hence the name, according to the New York Public Library) living at the London Zoo during World War I. Milne’s coincidentally named son, Christopher Robin, visited the animal often and named his own stuffed bear after the real Winnie — and, oddly enough, a swan named Pooh.

Tim here. It’s Independence Day weekend here in the States, which means that most of you undoubtedly have something better to do than read about old cartoons. But if I promise to keep things short, hopefully you’ll indulge me in chatting up an odd little animated short perfectly timed to the holiday.
I have in mind Ben and Me, one of the oddest one-offs in the history of Walt Disney Productions. Released in November, 1953, it was the studio’s first two-reel animated short, and one of the initial releases under Disney’s own Buena Vista Distribution label, part of a package deal with the nature documentary The Living Desert. But more to the point, for our present purposes, it’s about how a mouse helps Benjamin Franklin write the preamble to the Declaration of Independence. We can wait a minute if you want to process all the ways...

A favorite filmmaker and worth noting.
One of our favorite filmmakers here at Trailers from Hell is the great William Cameron Menzies, boldly graphic production designer extraordinaire. He also directed and produced, and gave us such classics as Things to Come, Invaders from Mars and the criminally obscure Address Unknown.
David Bordwell, while researching the bizarre Menzies-designed Alice in Wonderland (1933), did a bit of delving into his astonishingly influential work, and published a sort of teaser for his elucidations here:
From the evidence I was encountering, it seemed that Welles and Toland’s accomplishment was to synthesize and push further some deep-space schemas that were already circulating in ambitious Hollywood circles. Connecting some dots, I realized that one of the earliest champions of aggressive imagery in general, not just big foregrounds and deep backgrounds, was William Cameron Menzies.
Don’t forget to click the links to his larger essay. It’s a must,...

The remains of '50s B-movie actress and former Playboy model Yvette Vickers were found in her L.A. home. She was 82.
A neighbor noticed cobwebs on Vickers' mailbox, and when she entered the dilapidated house, she found the actress' decomposing body. Vickers had long been a recluse -- and could have been dead for as long as a year, reports the Los Angeles Times.
"She kept to herself, had friends and seemed like a very independent spirit,...

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Roommate – Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester, Cam Gigandet
Sanctum – Richard Roxburgh, Ioan Gruffudd, Allison Cratchley
Movie of the Week
Sanctum
The Stars: Richard Roxburgh, Ioan Gruffudd, Allison Cratchley
The Plot: An underwater cave diving team experiences a life-threatening crisis during an expedition to the unexplored and least accessible cave system in the world.
The Buzz: This film looks stunning. I’m excited to see it in IMAX 3D. With a cast of relative unknowns (save Richard Roxburgh of Moulin Rouge) the star of this one looks to be cinematographer Jules O’Loughlin.
This is S.O.P. as far as Hollywood marketing is concerned, but I’ve always been annoyed when production credits are used to dupe the cinematically challenged populace. This film is produced by James Cameron, not directed. Direction credits go to Alister Grierson, a relatively untested director; Sanctum being only his second feature,...

Your Weekly Source for Blu-Ray and DVD Release News
The late, great Blake Edwards’ 10 — starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek — gets immortalized on Blu-Ray. Two films go from silver screen to Blu-Ray… Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star in An Affair To Remember; and Bette Davis stars in All About Eve, just in time for it’s 60th anniversary. Disney’s animated classic Alice In Wonderland comes out of the vault for a special 60th anniversary treatment. Sticking with the anniversary trend, Highlander reaches it’s 25th (tentatively) with a special gift set, boxed with Highlander 2. Let Me In fills the role as this week’s primary horror release, with Hatchet 2 showing up to the party a day late. My indie Blu-Ray pick of the week goes to the indie sci-fi/drama Monsters, a low-budget film which made huge waves on the festival circuit, is...
