I thought John Ritter looked very strange in this episode. It was interesting in that he seemed human at the beginning. He was a bit of a fascist in having to have complete control in his life, including making it a project to get Buffy under control. Mom, of course, is in love with him, and Buffy must respect her wishes, up to a point. Things go sour when Buffy "kills" him. Since he is not a vampire, there is the possibility of charges, plus that anger a disdain of he mother. But he comes back, looking really bad. He was damaged in his fall down the stairs and when there is huge gouge in his arm, it reveals he is a machine. This was quite enjoyable as Buffy is pulled all over by emotions that she hasn't felt before. She begins incredibly jealous of a replacement for her father, and that feeds into her sadness.
