6/10
Could Have Been Better
22 September 2023
If this movie was marketed as a remastered version of the original it would have been a 8 or so from me but considering this is a sequel I have to give it a 6 for a few reasons.

So in terms of where the last movie ended with Richard, Paddy and Emmeline being found unconscious/asleep in the lifeboat by Richard's father aka Emmeline's uncle this movie completely wrecks that ending, which is pretty much my biggest complaint and the cause of the loss of 2 stars for me. In this sequel both Richard and Emmeline are both dead yet somehow baby Paddy is still alive and well which makes zero sense. Follow that up with the ship that finds them no longer being the one with Richards father on it who was out searching for his son and niece, but is now just some random passing ship and it honestly ruins what would otherwise have been an alright sequel.

Story wise it's basically exactly the same as the first movie with some minor variations which again would have been much better suited as a remastered or reboot film but as a sequel is a bit disappointing.

The casting is the brightest point with the beautiful Milla Jovovich playing Lilli aka this films Emmeline who gives an outstanding performance. Milla definitely captures the essence of her character and portrays it well on screen. Richard aka Paddy played by Brian Krause also gives us a good performance and overall does a good job though I would say Chris Atkins was a better Richard.

The vfx and sfx are fine not much visual effects are really needed I would think for a movie like this but anyway good job with all of it.

Overall a 6/10 from me for the butchered beginning since this is meant to be a sequel to the first film. If it was a plain remaster or reboot would be a 8/10 then for me.
