Whiskey Galore (1949) : Brief Review -

Hold your beers and have a sip of this sweetest gang robbery of Whiskey from British Cinema. As Wikipedia evince, Whiskey Galore came out in the same year as 'Passport to Pimlico' and 'Kind Hearts and Coronets', leading to 1949 being remembered as one of the peak years of the Ealing comedies. I agree fully. I would like to elude comparison, but I would say that this one is as good as those two films. Of course, Kind Hearts an Coronets leads by distance, but the comparison would make it unfair as the two films mainly belongs to different themes. The comedy genre remains same but the humor, perspective and subject everything differs. The story-based on a true event-concerns a shipwreck off a fictional Scottish island, the inhabitants of which have run out of whiskey because of wartime rationing. The islanders find out the ship is carrying 50,000 cases of whiskey, some of which they salvage, against the opposition of the local Customs and Excise men. The film is not about one or two characters, it is about that whole island, whole town, so I can't point out a single or couple of performances to review. I say, all are good and supporting to each other. Having this big bunch of characters makes it a little confusing because you don't get to understand a few characters until you are become acquainted by them. The writing is too good considering the kind of subject is presents and without any shame. It is wide-open characters listing and there is no ethical lecture, but still, the content is likable because you connect to those characters. It doesn't matter if you are a drunkard or not, there is some unmissable fun in the film that you just can't hate, even though you might hate the subject. Alexander Mackendrick presents a true story in proper cinematic manners, where nothing seems to be much wrong. So, yes, give it a watch.
