A Holmes to rival Rathbone and Brett
19 March 2021
The meeting of Holmes and Watson takes place at the start of this episode and then they embark on the case of the Speckled Band with a few minor changes to the original plot. The acting, costumes and recreation of the interior of 221B are all superb. It's funny seeing Russian streets doubling up for Baker Street and central London with street signs and extras dressed as London policemen on patrol. They have added just the right amount of humour too so it is great fun to watch. It's a great shame that these Russian episodes are not more widely known. There are occasional mistakes in the subtitles but they don't distract from what in my opinion is a portrayal of Holmes to rival those of the great Rathbone and Brett. Watson here is also easily equal to their sidekicks and portrayed as an intelligent man rather than a comic foil. I would also like to say how great their version of The hound of the Baskervilles is too.
