16 to Life (2009)
7/10
little indie with a little quirk
28 January 2021
Kate (Hallee Hirsh) lives in a rural town on the Mississippi. Her mother died when she was 9. She works with Rene (Shiloh Fernandez), Darby (Mandy Musgrave), and Tatiana in a riverside summer snack shack owned by Louise (Theresa Russell). She loves reading and the latest book is on the Chinese Cultural Revolution. It's a day in her life. It's her sweet sixteen and she's never been kissed.

It's a little indie with a little bit of quirkiness. The filmmaker seems to be able and competent. Hallee Hirsh is endearing. My main issue is the final guy. There's really only one guy in this movie with enough charisma and enough screen time for a kiss to matter. It's Rene. I don't suggest making Rene the first kiss but more time should be spent on the final guy and he should be played by a more charismatic actor. I'm not sure if all the elements tie together well but I like all the elements. I like all the characters and each of their journeys. I also always have a soft spot for an one-day or one-night movies.
