Why Are We Here?
5 December 2020
The taste of a properly made cup of coffee; the smell of freshly baked bread; the noontide mass, the common evening meal: every day seems the same in this small Portuguese village. Even the amiable arguments are the same, and take place at the same time each day. One day photographer Lisa Fávero comes to town. Why does this place evene xst? What keeps these people here? Is it simple inertia, laziness?

I've been looking at the WOMEN MAKE FILM movies on Turner Classic Movies, and this is the second Portuguese movie in the series that considers the same points and comes to the same conclusions. I've only seen about twenty Portuguese movies, but this hardly seems a coincidence. Does this theme interest women more than men? Is it simply one that hadn't been considered before? Is there a genre of these films I haven't encountered?

All interesting questions, which have little to do with this film, which is relaxed, beautiful to look at, and offers a definite answer to the questions it raises.
