Its Halloween. Six psychopaths are broken out of the asylum where they are being held. The brains of the operation has arranged for them to be hidden in a carnival funhouse so they can continue their evil ways. Kids who attend the funhouse gets massacred, but nobody is aware as it looks like it could be all part of this years theme. Who will survive, and what will be left of them?
Directed by Andy Palmer, this 2016 Horror Comedy film has a runtime of 90 mins and is rated 18. Although top billed, Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) only has about 10 minutes of screen time) so don't sit down to watch this thinking he'll be one of the main players in the story.
This film does not have much of a plot, and it's not all that original either. It is more of an aesthetically driven film concentrating on the killings, blood, and gore. There is not really any depth of development to the film, it is all pretty one dimensional - the protagonists want to survive, the psychos want to kill. There isn't really much of an explanation or analysis as to why the psychos want to kill people, and with what little back story they get at the films intro, they are probably just mentally deranged. While the start of the film is a little cheesy, the middle of the film gets better and is a lot more fun (albeit some really wooden acting hurt my feelings at times), but by contrast, the end of the film was a bit of a let-down.
The comedy element of the film is the bloodshed and some occasional in-jokes that never really hit the mark. The horror element of the film is also the bloodshed, and I guess the potential of the psychopaths. All the standard comedy horror tropes where present. There were occasional, but very subtle nods to slasher/horror films of the 80/90's. With the amount of bloodshed, it was nice to see that attention had been paid to the effects because these were okay and at times viscerally appealing. But while this might be a fun (but pointless) gory horror film, it is let down by a basic plot, a poor script, and cheesy acting. Not a film for the whole family, and average at best - this film fills 90 minutes, but probably won't leave you feeling fulfilled.
