Birds of a Feather...

I will say, Titans continues to defy my expectations in more than one way, but still has some work to do before it can really break out. With "Hawk and Dove", my hopes are even higher. This episode did an excellent job of showcasing the duo, both in action and out. Their on-going relationship drama and understandable struggle with fighting crime was felt and added a layers to them. Their costumes also deserve a shoutout for being particularly accurate. Robin (Brenton Thwaites) and Rachel (Teagan Croft) continued their journey, though I felt as if that storyline never measured up in terms of pacing. As for Starfire (Anna Diop) and Beastboy (Ryan Potter), there was no sign of either, pushing their team-up even more down the line. A major complaint would be the fighting. Yes, it is bloody and brutal (which is a good thing), but almost every action set-piece is a dimly lit clumsily edited piece of storytelling with very obvious CG blood effects. That needs work. Also, given that this is a mature show, I would expect slightly smarter dialogue. I'm not at all against throwing the f-word out there for realism, but making the script a little more conscious would always help. "Hawk and Dove" shaped up nicely, but its attempt to criss-cross character arc's and failed attempts at gritty action undermine its otherwise stellar portrayal of the titular superhero team.
