The new man follows Giles as he feels he no longer has purpose or a job to occupy his time. At a bar with his old friend Ethan they share a few drinks and he wakes up in the morning a monster. This is a weak season four episode as Giles appearance is the only thing that changes yet can think rationally going to others for help. The only moment that really stands out is when he takes the opportunity to scare Walsh walking down the street for berating him earlier. It turns out Ethan gave him a potion for what reason is anyone's guess as it isn't explored or covered very well.
Another aspect that I find interesting is Buffy thinking the creature killed her father figure and wanting to kill it with extreme prejudice. It really shows how close they've grown together and how much love or hurt they can heap on one another if they get hurt or die.
