Well that makes back to back weeks that Arrow has brought a character back from the 'dead'. Obviously we have known for almost a year now that both Sara and Ray would be starring in Legends of Tomorrow so it was only a matter of time till they were both resurrected. I think the problem I had with this episode was that it didn't feel enough like 'Arrow' to me. It was one of the major problems with the latter half of season 3 and it was apparent once again in 'Lost Souls'. With that said, there were plenty of fantastic moments in tonight's episode in what was probably the most light-hearted episode for the series to date.
Caity Lotz has always been a highlight on this show and so I'm glad that she is getting more screen time and ultimately a starring role in the spin off, but Sara felt forced into the plot for this episode. And it was yet another head scratching decision for the team to allow Sara out in the field on such a short return from the pit. The whole 'I need to find myself so I'm leaving town thing' is really overused in shows and it annoyed me once again when Sara left. Seriously Quentin's right we had her for 5 minutes. With that said it was great seeing her suit up as the Canary one last time (before she gets the white suit). Although, considering Sara has been gone for over a year and wasn't alive for Laurel's transition into Black Canary, wouldn't Sara at least make a remark about her going into the field as a hero? Sure she gave her the jacket at the end of season 2 but she acted like she expected Laurel to be a full blown superhero.
The other Legends character this episode focused on was Ray. I was glad to see that at least this set up for Legends tied into something that was going on in Arrow with Darhk capturing him in his new miniature form. Which by the way, those effects to make it seem like Palmer was shrunken were really great. It's also interesting to note that both Flash and Arrow had a huge week with their so called 'big bads' in episode 6. Zoom definitely made his presence felt last night on Flash and Darhk proved once again that he's someone you don't mess with. But because of Darhk's sort of anti- climatic encounter with Oliver, I'll take that Zoom appearance any day. Although I guess we will have to wait and see with whatever the heck that board ting is that Darhk had in the box.
This episode also focused on plenty of different relationships and relationship issues. I have to admit I found a lot of the moments to be pretty dull, especially Thea and the campaign manager. I like Willa Holland, but whenever this show tries to give her a love interest it fails, and it fails hard. Roy had his worst moments as the girlfriend of Thea and was great after that relationship fell a part. Should we even bring up the dumb DJ character from last season? Another possible relationship was the fan suggested couple of Donna Smoak and Quentin. While it's an interesting dynamic, that scene was so out of nowhere so if they are going to take those characters somewhere, I would expect a little bit more of a natural set up.
I did however find the Oliver and Felicity troubles to be quite realistic and for the most part well written. A lot of great questions were raised by both sides and it's only natural that they would have a fight every once in awhile. The solution was noticeably cheesy and seemed a little bit more tonally consistent with The Flash, but still nonetheless enjoyable. It also made for some funny moments (yes Arrow can be funny sometimes, rarely) with Felicity's mother involved. Hearing Oliver say the word emoji while hooded up as Green Arrow was especially amusing. These relationship struggles also led to a great bro to bro scene between Diggle and Oliver. When was the last time we had one of those? They even referenced the legendary Russian vodka.
So while this episode felt a bit disjointed at times, there was still a lot of fun to be had here. We got some great team up fight sequences with everyone suited up, some needed bro time, and finally a big Darhk episode. A few other tidbits include Ray namedropping Spectre literally a week after the new James Bond film came out, classic Ray. And finally the idea of having Felicity as a 'target'. No I don't believe at all that she will die because now Darhk knows her name. This is simply just the show making you believe she will die. Something I'm all too familiar with being a Game of Thrones viewer. Oh and the flashbacks? Still uninteresting.
