Moulin Rouge! (2001)
10/10
Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place
9 January 2002
I picked up Moulin Rouge at the rental store thinking "What the heck? At least I can say I saw it," thinking it wouldn't be that good. Boy was I wrong! I should have known I would fall hopelessly in love with the movie. Baz Luhrman(director, most well known for his direction of Romeo and Juliet) is a genius seeing scenes and putting them together in a way that no one else would have done. The editing is fantastic and really brings out so much emotion whether it is happy, sad, or hilarious. I have never really seen many Nicole Kidman films but this has given me a whole new respect for her and I am a fan for life. She is a remarkably talented actress from every word to every blink. Her facial expressions can stir emotions inside you that you never knew were there. You could always tell what she was feeling and she made it very apparent when she was Satine the actress and Satine the woman in love. I was so surprised to hear how wonderfully she sings and never thought I would have a "Nicole Kidman CD" I can't say enough good things about her performance. I have seen a few films starring Ewan McGregor and loved every one of them, this one tops the cake. As the naive man in love with a woman everyone wants, he is so wonderful and his voice makes him that much more. (if I say anything else great about his performance I will spoil the movie) Kidman and McGregor have fantastic on-screen chemistry causing that wonderful warm fuzzy feeling ("it's a little bit funny this feeling inside") whenever they are together in the scenes. This is a picture you never want to end but it does and all you can do is rewind and watch it over and over again. Any film that does a music mix of "Lady Marmalade" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" gets a 10+ in my book. This isn't a movie for everyone, but for those of you who love great music, true love, and an all around craziness complete with a new cover of "Like a Virgin" you will be happily surprised with the masterpiece of Moulin Rouge! which in my opinion will be a classic that people will be enjoying for a million years to come. "It's spectacular spectacular, no word from your vernacular... So exc-i-ting the audience will stop and cheer, so de-light-ing it will run for 50 years!"
