A year ago, Sen Morimoto was on the cusp of quitting music altogether. Instead, the Chicago-based, Japan-born multi-instrumentalist and producer channeled his disillusionment with the music industry and society at large into a new album, Diagnosis. He released it this fall on the quietly influential indie label he co-owns, Sooper Records, using his own blend of jazz, rap, neo-soul, and indie rock to rail against the rat race. “A lot of my music in the past is really peaceful, chill beats and thoughts about people and friendships,” Morimoto, 30, says. “And...

In the wake of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s first six months in office, Chicago finds itself grappling with a historically low approval rating, setting a record among Windy City mayors. Johnson, who took the reins from Lori Lightfoot, has failed to resonate with residents, especially as the city battles a surge in violent crime and contends […]

San Francisco, Dec 6 (Ians) Ride-hailing major Uber will pay millions of dollars as settlement with the City of Chicago in the US for listing local restaurants in food delivery apps Uber Eats and Postmates food delivery apps without consent along with charging excess commission fees.
More than 2,500 Chicago restaurants are estimated to be eligible to benefit from the Uber settlement, reports TechCrunch.
Over 5 million will go toward paying damages back to Chicago restaurants that were affected, and 1.5 million will go to Chicago for the costs incurred during the city’s two-year investigation into the matter.
Uber will pay an additional 2.25 million to restaurants that were allegedly charged commissions higher than the fee cap and 500,000 to restaurants that Uber listed on its platforms without consent.
Uber will also pay 2.5 million in commission waivers to affected restaurants.
“Chicago’s restaurant owners and workers work diligently to build their reputations and serve our residents and visitors.

Barack Obama will appear as a guest on the Nov. 17 episode of “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah,” Variety has learned exclusively. The episode airs on Comedy Central at 11 p.m.
In conversation with Noah, the former president will discuss the Obama Foundation Democracy Forum and critical issues facing America and the world today. The interview will be Obama’s third with Noah, and his first in-studio. He previously appeared in a 2020 virtually taped episode, and did one of his final interviews as president with Noah at the White House.
The interview comes the week after the midterm elections that won the Republican party control of the House of Representatives — ending two years headed by the Democrats — and just days after Obama’s successor, the twice impeached Donald Trump, announced his bid to return to the White House in 2024.

Chicago – The honoring of an institution in the City of Chicago via the documentary “Art and Pep” – the owners of the iconic Sidetrack gay bar in Chicago’s “Boystown” LGBTQ+ neighborhood – was supported by Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who walked the Red Carpet at the 58th Chicago International Film Festival on October 14th.
Lori Lightfoot made history in 2019 by becoming the first female African American and openly gay mayor in Chicago’s history, after a career as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, city official and liaison with the Chicago Police Department.

Byron Allen’s 10B Racial Stereotyping Suit Against McDonald’s Can Move Forward, Judge Rules – Update

2Nd Update, 2:45 Pm: A federal judge in Los Angeles today rejected a motion to dismiss Byron Allen’s 10 billion lawsuit against McDonald’s Corp that alleges racial discrimination.
In his ruling (read it here), U.S. District Judge Fernando Olguin said the Allen Media Group founder and chairman/CEO can proceed in trying to prove that the fast-food giant didn’t give Black-owned media outlets a fair shake as it disbursed massive advertising budgets.
“This is about economic inclusion of African American-owned businesses in the U.S. economy,” Allen said of the ruling. “McDonald’s takes billions from African American consumers and gives almost nothing back. The biggest trade deficit in America is the trade deficit between white corporate America and Black America, and McDonald’s is guilty of perpetuating this disparity. The economic exclusion must stop immediately.”

Elena Lypnytska was so distraught when Russia invaded Ukraine that she immediately threw up. That night, she had trouble sleeping as she scanned the news, checking in with loved ones and contemplating ways to help. By Saturday, she sorted out a way to collect necessities to send to Ukrainians at the forefront of the conflict.
“Right now, we can’t send money to Ukraine, we can’t send regular packages,” she explains to Rolling Stone. But Chicago-based Meest-Karpaty — a package-delivery company that services several countries in Eastern Europe — started a...

Tpg Real Estate Partners has acquired the studio campuses of Cinespace Studios in Chicago and Toronto — combined the second largest independent sound stage platform in North America — as the buying, selling and building of sound stages continues at a fast clip. It’s the firm’s second major deal in the space in as many months after agreeing in late September to acquire a large stake in Germany’s Studio Babelsberg.
Financial terms of the latest transaction were not disclosed but sources close to the deal pegged it at around $1.1 billion.
Eoin Egan, former head of production services at Netflix, will join Cinespace as COO.
Founded by the Mirkopoulos family in Toronto together with the Pissios family in Chicago, Cinespace specializes in the development, management, and operation of studio space and support facilities for the film, television, and digital media production industry. Even though Jackson James had worked on some of his father’s documentaries in the past, getting to serve as co-director of photography with him on “City So Real,” became a really special experience. “It was really the first time where it felt like it was more of like a collaboration and we were kind of able to bounce ideas back and forth and I was kind of involved from the beginning,” James tells us in our recent webchat (watch the video above). James found that the biggest lesson he learned from the experience was what was most important in chronicling a film’s subjects. “The biggest thing that I took away from working with him was how much his films and a lot of documentaries are just about relationships; really strong relationships with your subjects.”

When the filming of “City So Real” was completed, Steve James had a lot of material to sort through to construct the eventual docuseries. “All together, we probably shot for about a year and we certainly shot over 400 hours of material,” James tells Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: Documentary and Nonfiction panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). Other than focusing on the mayoral race in Chicago and the trial for the police officer who murdered Laquan McDonald, James didn’t want to have too firm idea of what the project would be. The point, he says, “was really to embrace the uncertainty and the serendipitousness of capturing the city at this time.”

The last time the Foo Fighters headlined Lollapalooza’s flagship festival in Chicago in 2011, the band appeared to have the power to control the skies. During “My Hero,” every guitar stroke seemed dramatically timed to each torrential downpour, eliciting buoyant cheers from the crowd. Back then, weather was the typical worry at an outdoor festival. Now, of course, the main concern over large gatherings such as Lolla is the potential to become a super-spreader event.

Lollapalooza is set to take place this week despite an uptick in Covid-19 cases and growing concern and criticism, including from a prominent Chicago infectious disease expert. So just how safe is it to attend? The answer is complicated.
The annual summer festival, which hosts around 100,000 attendees each of the four days of its run in Chicago, makes its return to Grant Park July 29th through August 1st. When the festival was officially announced in mid-May, attendance safety guidelines were put in place, but those guidelines have shifted over the last few months.

Lollapalooza, one of the biggest music festivals in the U.S., is coming up fast, following up hip-hop fest Rolling Loud Miami as one of the music festivals making their big summer comeback. While everyone has already started to pack some bags and coordinate a plan (like we’ve said before, planning is key), it doesn’t come without a hint of caution this year.

Director Steve James has been making films for more than 30 years now, earning two Oscar nominations along the way: Best Editing for his landmark 1994 documentary Hoop Dreams, and Best Documentary Feature for the 2016 film Abacus: Small Enough to Jail.
One of his foremost skills as a filmmaker is one seemingly anyone could develop: to listen.
“I think one of the things making documentaries pushes one to do is to listen,” he tells Deadline. “It’s a form of filmmaking that benefits greatly by just being open to what people have to say to you, and being genuinely curious about what they have to say.”
James is not the only good listener in his family.
“My wife is an actual counselor, who has training in psychology, and for a living, she has to listen to people, and really listen to people. And I think filmmaking is my way of doing that too,...

When award-winning documentarian Steve James premiered his docuseries “City So Real” to great acclaim at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, it existed strictly as a four-part effort. The taut, edge-of-your seat insider’s treatment of the hotly contested, 14-candidate-deep 2019 mayoral race in Chicago not only highlighted the incredibly varied individuals running for office, but also showcased a full panorama of Windy City residents encompassing an array of districts.
All of them were in various states of ennui and distrust due to the city’s famously corrupt legacies. The series chronicled a startling victory via runoff by once-lagging underdog Lori Lightfoot, an openly gay Black woman armed with decades of public service and grassroots-based tenacity. Think Rocky but switch out the Philly cheesesteaks for Italian beef sandwiches.
But soon thereafter, as director James bluntly pointed out, “the world changed.”

Tucker Carlson apparently has some kind of beef with cats, and on his Fox News show Wednesday night went off on them at length during a bizarre rant about Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot about how he thinks her city is falling apart, rat-infested, and full of “physical filth.” And he really laid into cats as inferior to dogs when it comes to hunting rats.
Chicago does have a growing rat problem and pest control company Orkin named it the “rattiest” city for the sixth year in a row last year. An animal shelter in Chicago released roughly 1,000 feral cats for hire onto the streets near businesses and residential areas, hoping they could curb the spread of the rodents.
Tucker thinks that asking cats to do the job is a bad idea, and brought on a guy he called a “rat wrangler” named Jordan Reed to join “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and discuss the topic.

Body camera footage released Thursday, April 15th, showed that 13-year-old Adam Toledo had his hands up and did not appear to be holding a firearm when a Chicago police officer shot him in the chest and killed him. The video appears to contradict claims made by a prosecutor last week that Toledo had a gun in his hand at the time.
The videos — a mix of body camera footage from the officers involved and third-party footage — were published on the website of the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, the Chicago Tribute notes.

The Paley Center for Media is proud to announce that Soledad O'Brien will be joining its latest PaleyImpact program, Uncovering Racial Injustice with BET’s Disrupt & Dismantle.
During the event, being held as part of Women’s History Month, the award-winning journalist and producer will discuss her powerful new BET documentary series Disrupt & Dismantle with Scott Mills, President, BET. The conversation will address how the series tackles head-on the need to speak truth to power, and ask hard questions focusing on progressive societal change. The program will also explore ways media can shine a light on systemic racism, and empower people to make change within their own communities. Among the women featured in the series are Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Illinois State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, and Queen Mary Allen-Davis, a South Carolina woman fighting to hold onto her family’s land. On the day of the 2019 Chicago mayoral election, candidate Neal Sáles-Griffin went to a polling place first thing in the morning to cast a vote for himself, a celebratory moment he’d worked towards for months. Instead, the digital machine immediately failed. He had to wait as the harried volunteers rebooted it, called tech support, and assured him that any minute now, surely, he’d be able to successfully vote.
As portrayed in NatGeo’s new docuseries “City So Real,” from lauded “Hoop Dreams” documentarian Steve James, this is a small moment in the grand scheme of things. The series is comprised of just five episodes, but follows the entire Chicago mayoral election from the early days following Rahm Emanuel’s resignation, through the protests over a police officer shooting and killing 17 year-old Laquan McDonald, to Lori Lightfoot’s victory, and to the Black Lives Matter protests and coronavirus pandemic unfolding in the present.

Cinematographer Ashley O’Shay makes her feature directorial debut with “Unapologetic,” screening as part of the Doc NYC series.
The documentary is shortlisted in the Best Feature category by the International Documentary Association and follows two young Black women organizing for Black political, economic, and social liberation through a calendar year of triumphs and necessary forfeits.
The story of “Unapologetic” is told through the lens of Janaé and Bella, two fierce abolitionist leaders. O’Shay takes a deep look into the Movement for Black Lives, from the police murder of Rekia Boyd to the election of Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
“I hope ‘Unapologetic’ inspires viewers to meet the movement where they’re at. At such a hallmark time in the conversation around policing and brutality in our country, it is crucial for communities to investigate how they can best serve the movement, and recognize what Black grassroots organizations have already taken the lead,...

Long before Kanye West tardily disrupted the 2020 presidential election, the pioneering force in American hip-hop put himself smack in the middle of Chicago’s crowded 2019 mayoral race. West endorsed candidate Amara Enyia at a “pop-up” rally, standing quietly next to fellow supporter Chance the Rapper and behind their progressive candidate as she spoke to a small crowd from the sidewalk. These celebrity endorsements were meant to help boost awareness, but even then, questions were asked if West’s support of Donald Trump would negatively effect the young, Black candidate’s attempts to court Black voters.
And Steve James was there.
Before the GOP’s attack on voting, including inflated claims of voter fraud and the outright theft of people’s ballots, delegates for Chicago mayoral candidates sat around a computer and made knowingly false claims to try to boot their opponents from the ballot entirely. Lawyers cited mistakes on pages that didn’t exist,...

Dickens had the teeming streets of Victorian-era London, Balzac had Paris during the Bourbon Restoration period, and Steve James has 21st century Chicago. A key part of the team behind the groundbreaking Hoop Dreams, this veteran documentarian has dabbled over the years in everything from biopics (Prefontaine) to bigger-picture looks at social ills (Abacus: Small Enough to Jail). It’s the City of Broad Shoulders, however, that’s provided him with a creative home base via Kartemquin Films and a subject rich enough to examine in depth. Every U.S.

Critics at this year’s Sundance Film Festival were effusive in their praise for “City So Real.” Over four installments, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker Steve James (“Hoop Dreams”) chronicled a year in the life of his adopted home of Chicago that saw a heated race for mayor, as well as a highly controversial and publicized murder trial of a police officer who killed a black male teenager.
Indiewire’s Ben Travers called it an “utterly gripping” portrait of the third-biggest U.S. metropolis. “City So Real,” noted Travers, “encapsulates more than just a historical moment for Chicago. James isn’t telling the story of an American city, but the American city; Chicago’s problems are America’s problems, from our divisions to our strengths.” As he noted, “‘Significance’ is a word that gets tossed around a lot when discussing topical entertainment these days but ‘City So Real’ carries its weight effortlessly…...

Chicago – The 2018-19 mayoral campaign in Chicago was a historic moment for the city, as the first woman of color (Lori Lightfoot) was elected. Director Steve James, of the legendary “Hoop Dreams,” takes on the events leading up to this history and beyond, in “City So Real.”
The documentary is actually a five-part miniseries, which will make its debut on the NatGeo channel on Thursday, October 29th. The remarkable journey focuses on the candidates, but also on the divide in Chicago … between neighborhoods, black&white and socioeconomic classes. As the campaign wears on, in the background is the police killing of Laquan McDonald – a black teenager – and the subsequent backlash for the governmental and law enforcement authorities in the city. It’s all captured through the lens and perspective of Steve James, and his longtime producer Zak Piper.

Oscar-nominated documentarian Steven James (“Hoop Dreams”) unveiled “City So Real,” his then-four-part documentary series about his adopted city of Chicago at the Sundance Film Festival. The sweeping series covering 2018-2019 chronicles the heated over-crowded race for mayor. It also delves into the murder trial of a Chicago policeman accused of killing a black teenage boy and the flight of many black inhabitants to other cities and states.
“City So Real” received strong reviews from the critics. James and his longtime producing partner (and sound recordist) Zak Piper set out to sell the series. But their plans were upended by the pandemic and the murder of George Floyd in May. So, James returned to “City So Real” to produce a fifth episode. NatGeo will be airing all five episodes commercial free on Oct. 29th; the series will also be available beginning Oct. 30 on Hulu.

Chicago – One of the most influential documentary makers in film history is Chicagoan Steve James of Kartemquin Films. His lens has commented upon not only the seminal “Hoop Dreams” (1994), but “Stevie” (2002), “The Interrupters” (2011), the Roger Ebert bio doc “Life Itself” (2014) and the recent “America to Me.”
His latest, debuting at the 56th Chicago International Film Festival (and October 29th on the National Geographic Channel), is “City So Real,” a searing inside look at the 2018 Chicago mayoral campaign. One of the subjects of that doc was the young and dynamic outlier candidate Neal Sáles Griffin, who talked issues within the film with HollywoodChicago.com.

Chicago – One of the prime Chicago-centric documentaries at the 56th Chicago International Film Festival is “For Madmen Only: Stories of Del Close.” Del Close was a legendary instructor in the Chicago comedy improv scene, and director Heather Ross created this multi-layered doc of his comic force.
This is the feature documentary debut for Ms. Ross as director, after working as a producer and creator of short documentaries. This lifeline of Del Close starts with his childhood in Kansas (and the legends therein), through his initial work as a performer in New York City and Chicago, to his status as an iconic instructor in Chicago-style improv at both The Second City and Improv Olympics (iO). Director Steve James has cast his camera on different facets of America, lifting the veil onto lives that aren’t often given added nuance. His latest venture, the five-part documentary “City So Real,” looks to be his rawest and timeliest feature to date.
The documentary, airing on National Geographic, looks at the city of Chicago throughout 2019 and part of 2020 as the city deals with a contentious mayoral election, claims of corruption, and the deputy-involved shooting and death of Laquan McDonald.
The first trailer for “City So Real” will almost make you believe you’re watching tonight’s news, as images of protesters are shown. Mayoral candidate Lori Lightfoot is one of many Black women running for government office in Chicago and we hear about the corruption that will eventually explode onto the national stage.
This footage comes just one day after the world, including numerous Black celebrities, voiced their disgust...

Dubbed by members of its community as “the Black Sundance,” the BlackStar Film Festival has become a significant annual event celebrating the visual and storytelling traditions of not only the African diaspora, but also of global communities of color as well. With a lineup primarily composed of short films and feature-length debuts, the nine-year-old festival is also a major window into emerging talent, and this year is no different.
Typically held in Philadelphia, the week-long program (running August 20 through 26) will take place entirely online this year, as has been the case for most festivals since the beginning of the pandemic that shut down much of the country.
But even in a virtual space, BlackStar will present more than 80 films — representing over 20 countries, and including 24 world premieres — an array of live panels, and special events, bringing together some of the most innovative and impactful filmmakers, producers, and thinkers working today. The only things missing from the opening night of the Democratic National Convention on Monday were Beyoncé, the Rolling Stones and Barack Obama – and the former Potus is coming later this week.
Other than an audio glitch at the beginning of kingmaker Rep James Clyburn’s stint in front of the camera from his home state of South Carolina, the first of four nights of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ official bid for the White House was just over two-hours of fast paced television that may just seal the deal.

Amidst weeks of unrest in Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot has announced the creation of a “task force” to monitor protesters’ social media activity and prevent “looting,” NBC Chicago reports.
The social media monitoring is part of a five-point strategy to combat unrest in Chicago, where more than 100 people were arrested on Sunday, August 8th. The 20-person unit within the Chicago Police Department’s Crime Prevention and Information Center will be tasked with 24-hour monitoring of social media activity to track gatherings that may lead to violence in the city, she...

“The ReidOut,” Joy Reid’s new 7 p.m. MSNBC program, topped the time slot in total viewers with its Monday debut. Unfortunately, the new show still settled for a fairly distant third place among adults 25-54, which is the key demographic for companies advertising on news programming.
Erin Burnett on CNN won the demo in the hour, when 384,000 of her 1.332 million total viewers were between the ages of 25 to 54, according to Nielsen estimates.
Reid drew 2.627 million total viewers last night, with 285,000 of those coming from the key demo. That key-demo tally would technically not be last place on cable news if you counted Hln, but this is generally considered a three-horse race.

Reid’s overall audience sum made the “ReidOut” launch the second most-watched regularly scheduled episode in the MSNBC time slot ever. A “Hardball” episode from Sept.

Joy Reid’s first guest on her new nightly MSNBC show The ReidOut was presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who gave her an update on his search for a running mate.
Reid generally posed questions to Biden that reflected some of his campaign’s talking points, including President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, but she also put him on the spot when she asked whether he would commit to picking a Black woman as a running mate.
“I am not committed to naming any but the people I have named, and among them are four Black women. So that decision is underway right now. And by the way, Black women have supported me my entire career. You all act like all of the sudden there was an epiphany in South Carolina.”
Biden then talked about his history of support in Delaware, his home state.

Print and broadcast journalists who do the spadework of daily local and national breaking news reporting are being challenged like never before to cover an all-encompassing, relentlessly complex and fast-moving story. So many of those in the trenches of coronavirus coverage for major TV news organizations are women. In telling the stories of frontline workers and keeping government officials’ feet held to the fire, they’ve become frontline workers themselves.
“I’ve never felt more responsibility as a journalist and as a White House correspondent to get actionable information out to the public,” says Kristen Welker, a correspondent for MSNBC and NBC News. “You’re constantly asking yourself, ‘Am I doing enough? Am I living up to this moment? Am I asking the toughest questions of the president to make sure we’re continuing to do our job to hold him accountable for his words and his promises?’”

“We need some morality and we need some leadership,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti told Joe Biden today of what he was looking for from the federal government after weeks of the coronavirus pandemic ravaging the City of Angels and a weekend of protests and unrest arising from the killing of George Floyd last week.
As the Democrats’ presumptive nominee lamented a “horrible several years, but horrible six months” and the “inhuman …murder” of Floyd by a Minneapolis cop, Garcetti lambasted current “national leadership pushing back to 20th century policing, when crime rates were higher” with threats of greater violence in response.
The video conference was followed soon afterward today with an announcement from Garcetti’s office that L.A. would be under a curfew for the third night in a row. The citywide and countywide lockdown starts at 6 Pm and runs until 6 Am Tuesday.

For the past two months, as the novel coronavirus silently crept through her city, Lori Lightfoot, the Democratic mayor of Chicago, tried in vain to get the attention of the Trump White House. She wrote letters to President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, who leads the White House Coronavirus Task Force, pleading with them to coordinate their response efforts with the local leaders who would have to implement their “edicts,” as Lightfoot calls them.

I’m going to start this piece out by quoting the Roger Ebert quote that everyone quotes: “Bad movies are always too long, good movies are always too short just or right.” That’s a pretty good estimation of the day, even if nothing ever crossed over to the line into being outright bad.
The day started out with Steve James’ new series (as in 255 minutes over 4 episodes), City So Real, another towering documentary from the director of Hoop Dreams. Here, James and collaborators focus their cameras on Chicago’s last mayoral race, a race that ended in the election of one Lori Lightfoot. What results is a political thriller of mundane intensity and a rich mood piece on the state of modern Chicago. For its staggering runtime, City So Real is so well-paced that it felt like it went by in about an hour. The mounting intensity of the race,...

Update, 1:23 Pm: There’s the Chicago way and there’s the Chicago way and the Windy City isn’t the least blown over by the newly offense legal strategy by Jussie Smollett.

The Chicago Teachers Union reached a tentative agreement with the city on Thursday that will bring an end to a 11-day strike that kept more than 300,000 children out of school.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced the agreement after a closed-door meeting with CTU brass. “In the interest of our students and our parents who have been suffering, it was important to me to make sure we got our kids back in class,” she said. “Enough is enough, and so in the spirit of compromise, we agreed.”

As a special prosecutor probes into what really happened with Jussie Smollett in the early morning of January 29 on the cold streets of Chicago and the subsequently dismissed criminal case against him, the former Empire star and the Windy City are locked in a new war of words and court filings over their compensation lawsuit.
Earlier this month, Smollett moved to have the $130,000 repayment action filed by the city tossed to the curb. Now repped by Lori Lightfoot, Chicago has swung back in a filing of its own late Monday, saying no way and pay us double what you owe for the work the Chicago Police department did investigating an alleged attack.
“This lawsuit seeks to recover costs that Plaintiff City of Chicago (“City”) incurred because Defendant Jussie Smollett lied when he told Chicago Police Department officers that he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack,” the response...

The City of Chicago has filed a lawsuit against actor Jussie Smollett, in which the city seeks to recoup the costs of an investigation regarding an assault reported by the “Empire” star earlier this year.
According to court papers obtained by TheWrap, the suit, filed Thursday in Cook County Circuit Court, says that more than $130,000 in overtime costs were incurred as a result of the investigation.
“On January 29, 2019, Defendant submitted a false police report claiming that he was the victim of a racist and homophobic beating by unknown attackers. In reality, Defendant knew his attackers and orchestrated the purported attack himself,” the suit reads. “Later, when police confronted him with evidence about his attackers, he still refused to disclose his involvement in planning the attack. In investigating Defendant’s false statements and false police report, the City incurred significant costs in order to provide services reasonably related to Defendant’s conduct.

Jussie Smollett may have seen the felony charges against him dropped by state prosecutors last week and Taraji P. Henson is predicting he will return to Empire but the actor’s legal troubles in Chicago are far from over.
With the passing this evening of a deadline set by out-going Mayor Rahm Emanuel for Smollett to repay the Windy City $130,000 for the costs of the investigation into the alleged attack against him, Chicago is going to sue the actor.
“Mr. Smollett has refused to reimburse the City of Chicago for the cost of police overtime spent investigating his false police report on January 29, 2019, a spokesperson of the Midwestern metropolis said Thursday as it became Eod in Chicago. “The Law Department is now drafting a civil complaint that will be filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County. Once it is filed, the Law Department will send a courtesy copy of the complaint to Mr.

Fox may be “gratified” that all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett have been dropped, but there are some hard choices coming for the broadcaster now regarding the fate of Empire.
Fueled by ongoing outrage from outgoing Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and others, the growing blast radius from the controversial decision yesterday by state prosecutors finds the home of Empire in a tricky position over what to do with the series and one of its stars.
It’s a position that seems headed towards Empire coming back for another season, but most likely without Smollett, who has always claimed and continues to insist that he is innocent.
“Things are so unclear and there is a feeling that this isn’t over, that there’s more to come,” said an insider of the actor’s legal circumstances and ramifications for Empire. Coming off the close of the $71.3 billion Disney deal and a...
