This article contains spoilers for The Watch episodes 7 and 8.
Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books have long been fantasy favorites. In fact, the CEO of Motive Pictures, a UK company planning to adapt a huge number of Pratchett’s novels for television, called Discworld “a national treasure.” But with the recent lackluster reception of BBC America’s The Watch, can television adaptations both succeed in live-action serial storytelling and live up to the expectations of Pratchett fans?
Although the last two episodes of The Watch manage to redeem some of the earlier missteps of the season, there are reasons why the program never quite lived up to the expectations of Discworld fans. The punk-rock atmosphere of Ankh-Morpork was off-putting to many, and the jarring technological levels seemed at once futuristic and anachronistic.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of BBC America’s “The Watch.”)
The first season of BBC America’s “The Watch” ended on a huge cliffhanger on Sunday when Captain Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer) is teleported into the Observers’ realm. That’s after Wonse (Bianca Simone Mannie) teams up with them, having turned on The Watch after history is rewritten to make everyone believe she’s the one who committed Carcer’s (Sam Adewunmi) crimes — including the summoning of the Noble Dragon.
The series, which is inspired by Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld” fantasy novels, has yet to be picked up for a second season. But if and when it does, Adam Hugill, who plays The Watch member Constable Carrot, said the twist at the end of Season 1 “changes everything” moving forward.

This The Watch review contains spoilers.
The Watch Episode 3
The newest episode of The Watch takes the departure from the original Terry Pratchett Discworld series even further, so that only the names of the characters and some slight bits of characterization resemble the books at all. Instead, it sends viewers down the plot toward what looks like an eventual showdown between the villainous and driven Carcer and his one-time friend, now Watch Captain Sam Vimes.
Previously, Carcer stole a book from the Unseen University Library that enables him to summon a dragon—but not control it. Now, both Carcer and the Watch are after an artifact that allows its user to control the dragon. Carcer intends to burn all of the sprawling urban Ankh-Morpork to the ground. The Watch intends to stop him.
At the end of episode 2, we find out that Lady Sybil Ramkin—a vigilante who has been capturing and reforming criminals,...

This article has been kept as spoiler-free as possible, but since it discusses differences between the Discworld books and The Watch TV show, there will be discussion of changes to characters and setting, and some vague allusions to plot.
Let’s say one thing first and foremost: if you’ve never read any of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books, and you like quirky, funny Sff television, you’ll probably enjoy BBC America’s new show The Watch. It’s genuinely funny, well-acted, and well-made, even if it does have an obviously-television-sized CGI budget.
Here’s the problem though: if you are a fan of Pratchett’s Discworld books, on which the show is (very loosely) based, you’ll spend most of your first watch-through scratching your head in confusion.
The level of controversy around this new adaptation is unusual. Any book to screen adaptation always involves a certain amount of changes to the source material,...

The amount of literary content German authors Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were able to publish during the early to mid-19th century has given Hollywood a seemingly bottomless trove of imaginative narratives to pull from. Inspiration from these more than 200 fairy tales was used, for example, to produce six seasons of the NBC fantasy police procedural “Grimm.”
A prolific writer himself, late English novelist and satirist Terry Pratchett may not be as referenced in the mainstream film and TV industry as much as the Brothers Grimm, but with 41 books in his flat-planet “Discworld” series alone, there’s plenty for BBC America to borrow and re-envision, including its own fantasy cop show, “The Watch.” As a cyberpunk interpretation of Pratchett’s original text, however, the new series likely won’t create many more fans of mythical storytelling. In fact, the show’s generic worldbuilding, one-dimensional characterizations and lack of consistent wit...

Make no mistake: The Watch is inspired by Terry Pratchett’s Discworld offshoot series, The City Watch, but the BBC America series is very much its own animal, much the way Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency took its own direction from Douglas Adams’ novel on the same network. However, if the trailer coming out of New York Comic-Con’s virtual panel is any indication, there’s plenty of chaotic fun to be had in this version of the story.
The eight episodes of The Watch‘s inaugural season will follow recognizable characters such as City Watch Captain Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer), the last scion of nobility Lady Sybil Ramkin (Lara Rossi), the naïve but heroic Carrot (Adam Hugill), the mysterious Angua (Marama Corlett), the ingenious non-binary forensics expert Cheery (Jo Eaton-Kent), the dictatorial Lord Vetinari (Anna Chancellor), and Pratchett’s iconic personification of Death voiced by Wendell Pierce.

Pennyworth’s Anna Chancellor and Outlander’s James Fleet have joined the cast of BBC America’s The Watch, based on Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels.
The pair are the latest actors to join the BBC Studios and Narrativia-produced series, joining lead Richard Dormer.
Chancellor stars as Lord Vetinari, The Patrician of Ankh-Morpork, and architect of the city’s normalized wrongness and ramshackle system of governance, while Fleet stars as The Archchancellor, wizard, magical advisor, and the Head of the Unseen University.

Exclusive: The Watch, BBC America’s eight-episode series based on Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels, has cast its first main character.
British actor Adam Hugill (Pennyworth) has landed one of the lead roles in the series, playing Carrot.
Described as a “punk rock thriller” inspired by the City Watch subset of Discworld novels, the character-driven series centers on Pratchett’s misfit cops as they fight to save a ramshackle city of normalized wrongness from both the past and future in a perilous quest.
The Watch features such Discworld creations as City Watch Captain Sam Vimes, the last scion of nobility Lady Sybil Ramkin, the naïve but heroic Carrot Ironfoundersson (Hugill), the mysterious Angua, and the ingenious forensics expert Cheri together with Pratchett’s iconic characterization of Death.
Hugill’s Carrot was raised as a dwarf but turned out to be an orphaned human child. He joins the group after pursuing a career in law enforcement.

A corner of Terry Pratchett’s classic Discworld series will be adapted for the small screen by BBC America in The Watch.
The sprawling universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, a comic fantasy series of novels that has long since reached classic status, is getting a television adaptation treatment courtesy of BBC America in the form of a new original scripted series, The Watch, but the show will necessarily narrow its focus to the misfit cops that inhabit a subset of stories in the beloved series. BBC America will co-produce with Narrativia, and Simon Allen (The Musketeers) will pen the series with Hilary Salmon (Luther) at the helm.
The Watch's 8-episode inaugural season will follow the legendary City Watch along with recognizable characters such as Captain Sam Vimes, the last scion of nobility Lady Sybil Ramkin, the naïve but heroic Carrot, the mysterious Angua,...
